Two comments that I found funny (among others):

Sean: “So are we gonna riff, ‘Setting Up A Room’ ???”

Mike: “Yeah, why not…….I mean, we gotta riff something, right???

Sean (as he’s viewing the film): “No, No……..Why does this exist???…….Why on Earth would anyone…….

As Sean so poignantly asks, why WOULD anyone go to the trouble (not to mention the cost) of producing something as random as this ???

Kind of makes you wonder if there was ever ANY country anywhere that felt the necessity to ‘instruct’ its people, like 1950’s America….. :-/

I feel that I have an “expert” opinion to offer. I am 6 classes into an 8 class Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education and this short has helped me so much!

So far we have had three assignments (each in a different class) to draw a room layout for either PK or K-3 children. It has been about as exciting as depicted in the short, so I appreciated the riffing the guys did!! :)

I have to say that we have not been taught that 5 and 6 year-olds should be given actual SHARP saws to practice their wood working skills… Maybe I skipped that chapter. OR maybe giving a small child something they could cut an artery with and spurt blood all over their fellow classmates and teachers was decided to be a BAD idea sometime in the 90’s.

Thanks for the laughs guys!! :D

  14. @9 We haven’t switched from Stone – there were bottles of Ruination being drank in this as well. We are simply diverse in our appreciation of fine adult beverages.

I can think of a couple countries that used similar indoctrination techniques in the ’50s, but the subject matter of those films is a little different…

Joking aside, I highly recommend Ken Smith’s book Mental Hygiene: Better Living Through Classroom Films 1945-1970 to anyone curious about just why so many of these films were made. Fascinating stuff treated seriously, but not too seriously, if you know what I mean. (http://www.amazon.com/Mental-Hygiene-Through-Classroom-1945-1970/dp/0922233217/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpt_1)

I like how Conor’s watching it with the sound off. It’s probably more exciting that way.

I’m going to be weirdly contrarian and say I can SORT of see the point of this. Teachers might find it helpful to know how to make the use of space for children to play, and not just in kindergartens but in day care centers, and so on. The thing is, WE DIDN’T HAVE TO SEE EVERY STEP IN REAL TIME. We could have just had the shots of kids in the “set up” room (and maybe more than one example, for crying out loud) with explanations of why the arrangements work.

But no… we see these two women go about their business slowly, methodically, and oblivious to sneezing cameramen. It is so completely wrong-headed in its approach to “instruction” that it’s quite stunning.

Hahahaha! Watched this 4 times in a row and laughed each time … will definitely be downloading the short tonight! The look on Mike’s face as he gets drawn into the horror is priceless.
The women look exactly like the teachers at my pre-school, circa 1975!

First, I loved the Conar/Mike/Sean short which was very funny and makes me want to work at Rifftrax sooooooo bad.

Second, “Setting Up A Room” is the “Starfighters” of shorts. Yea, I can sorta see the point as I’ve made “instructional” short films when I worked at a university several years ago. But “Setting…” goes off the deep end quickly and Kevin’s scream of “What the HELL is going on here” six minutes in is both hilarious and quite appropriate.

Third, I showed “Setting…” to a buddy of mine the day after it came out and the look on his face five minutes in was IDENTICAL to Sean’s when he’s screaming about why this short exists…priceless…and my pal didn’t hit me….again, priceless.

Fifth…Forth, I can see this short being referenced at the next Rifftrax live event…and probably every event afterwards…

Wow…that looked just like my kindergarten classroom. 27 minutes, though? Even at their craziest, the ’50s shorts kept it….short.
