Weekend Discussion Thread: What Episodes Should Shout! Re-Release This Year?

Alert reader Kris writes:

What episodes should Shout Factory release, or re-release, in 2012? Or beyond? Boy, so much to choose from, right? Immediately, I’d say the big ones are “Mitchell” and “Diabolik,” but I’d also love to see re-releases for “Time Chasers,” “Bloodlust!” “The Deadly Mantis,” “Danger! Death Ray” and “Quest of the Delta Knights.

Here’s a vote for episode 506- EEGAH!

What’s your pick?

Count me down as being down with the MST3k vs. GODZILLA two disc release (heck, throw in a third disc full of extras, that would show us!).

Also I’d love to see a two-disc MITCHELL rerelease, which I’m pretty sure we’ll see this year (I PREDICT!)

And OF COURSE I’d DIE for a two-disc loaded with special features version of EEGAH! They could have a featurette entitled “Who Said That?: Watch Out for Snakes” that would shed light on who did actually say that off camera command, and why the heck it’s in the movie!

Take my idea Shout! Factory, run with it. It’s a freebie.

The only episodes that really need re-releasing as “Special Editions” are those that were put out without their accompanying MST Hour Wraparounds with Jack Perkins. So that would be:
    Cave Dwellers
    Pod People
The Unearthly (Hey, where’s the Jack Perkins at in the re-release? I guess because it’s not a “Special Edition”)
    Santa Claus Conquers The Martians
    Giant Gila Monster
    Teenagers From Outer Space
    Hercules Unchained
    Hercules Against The Moonmen
    I Accuse My Parents
But, instead of all of that rebuying, they could put all of these Jack Perkins clips onto one disc.
Also, you’ve heard me talk about this before, virtually every episode had awesome promos made for it. Thankfully, some of these promos will see the light of day on the next box set!

“It Conquered the World.” Because Man is a feeling creature, and because of it the greatest in the universe. He learned too late for himself that men have to find their own way, to make their own mistakes. There can’t be any gift of perfection from outside ourselves. When men seek such perfection they find only death, fire, loss, disillusionment and the end of everything that’s gone forward. Men have always sought an end to our misery but it can’t be given, it has to be achieved. There is hope, but it has to come from inside, from Man himself.

RIP Peter Graves. I know there’s not much hope because of course this is a Roger Corman movie, but we can always dream.

I’d also like more of the “extra footage” like what was included on Sidehackers

And don’t forget a Pumpkin Boy Collection — Commando Cody and the Rocket Men From the Moon — with all the remaining episodes the Brains didn’t riff on.

“Oh, I hate to shoot a butt like that!” and the Constant Heat Gun that sounds like a Chevy horn.

Shame they never made it to episode 10 – I think that was the repeat episode (okay, now, let’s go over everything that’s happened over the last 9 episodes — I mean, over the last few months — just in time for a stupid cliffhanger).

@103: A better route IMO would be to have a History of the MST Hour extra on a future set with all the wraps for the Rhino released titles included.

Amazing Colossal Man. It was only available on VHS from Rhino for about a month and I didn’t get the chance to buy or see it. Maybe shout can get it released on DVD.

Santa Claus Conquers the Martians in a MST/CT/Uncut 2 disc version & Dead Talk Back for a better transfer as far as re-releases
As far as what SF should release this year
    Ive narrowed it down to
Anything they can get the rights to
On a personal note, Id like to see the remainder of Season 2 (although Godzilla vs the Sea Monster wont happen)in the Joel era, and Squirm and Diabolik in the Mike era

Well I have every Rhino and Shout! release (I think) put out. So, that leaves grainy classics we hope to be released…not re-released, as they have never been released at all. Season 3 I always felt was the start of the specialness of MST3K, barring a few season 2 episodes, such as “Sidehackers” (Rhino). What do I want? Why, “Daddy-O” of course, followed by “War of the Colossal Beast(w/Mr. BNatural). Us old timers really need these 2 old timers in their full first-aired TV original glory. C’mon, Shout!

I’d also really love to see Space Travelers (Marooned) on Shout! DVD. Hilarious episode, some of the best riffs ever. “They’re really cutting loose on the air since that guy left.” “You know that insurance bill? I’d find it and pay it.” “We suggest you start breathing in shifts.”

118-I couldn’t agree more on War Of the Colossal Beast. I know, Colossal Man is due for a re-release and Mr. B is I’m sure on a shorts collection, but a two-disker of Colossal would be great!!!!

“The Slime People” + “12 To The Moon”. The only 2 experiments I have never seen. (although I saw a bit of “The Slime People” when it first aired way back when, the only thing I seem to remember is a reference to Pink Floyd’s “The Wall”.)

But, to be truthful, I’ll settle for anything they put out

Amazing Colossal Man did get a VHS release, even though I have both of them all ready, I would like to see a double feature release on shout for Amazing Colossal Man and War of the colossal beast. it would be nice to have clear crisp versions of them on dvd.

(oh and just a side note, wouldnt it be sweet to watch the episodes with the mystery science theater hour host segments back in kinda like what they did for night of the blood beast with turkey day version.)

Mitchell would be a great choice for the deluxe manos style treatment.

“Reynolds Wrap keeps freshness in, cant keep Mitchell Out!”

Post 121: What “nauseatingly racist riffs” are you talking about?

“Ignorance and hate” are not hilarious, and luckily we don’t have to worry about either one in MST3K. OK except for The Canada Song.

  30. Cronkite Moonshot says:

@#129… I’m the biggest MST fan around but lets be honest, there are definitely some VERY questionable things said in some of the Japanese movie episodes. I just watched Time of the Apes the other night and at one point they are singing stuff like “ching chong chingching chong”. And I know there are at least a few other such moments in some of the other earlier Joel era Japanese movie episodes well. I cringe every time I’m watching one of them and hear something like that come up. It doesn’t happen very often, and I’m sure it was done more out of a general naivety rather than just blatant racism like #121 implies, and I’m also sure the MST crew are probably pretty embarrassed by any such things now, but it definitely happened at certain points. It doesn’t help to defend or ignore it just because you enjoy the show and admire the people who made it, and don’t want to admit they made some questionable choices in those instances.

  31. I’d like to see MITCHELL re-released, but only if Shout! includes the original, uncut flick in widescreen. THE AMAZING COLOSSAL MAN would be nice to see on DVD, just so I can finally get rid of that VHS version. Additional picks: TEENAGE CRIMEWAVE, RADAR SECRET SERVICE, THE PUMAMAN, and a box set of Roger Corman titles.

  32. Neptune Man says:

The people complaining about racism in MST3K, what about all the jokes about white people? Like in Horror of Party Beach? You know, there’s a thing call humour, but I won’t bother to explain how it works. It tells a lot about this PC ridden age, that people talk about some sporadic, harmless jokes in a tv show as though they were war crimes. As I said before, you people are DENSE.

  33. Cronkite Moonshot says:

@#132… Here we go with the pathetic “PC gone mad” excuses, and even a dash of that old ignorant B.S. chestnut “what about all the poor white people being picked on?”. I always wonder why so many people see things like this as such a black and white issue (no pun intended… well maybe a little). It’s like you have to treat anything even slightly questionable as totally unforgivable, blatant racism, like the overly sensitive #121 implies, or you have to act as if no one should ever take offense to anything no matter what it is, like the especially ridiculous arguments of Neptune Man (#132) imply. Why is it so horrible to acknowledge that something might be questionable or in bad taste, while also understanding that it most likely wasn’t done out of any real sense of malice or with actual bad intent? I don’t think there is anything overly offensive in any MST episodes, but to ignore, or even worse defend something like the “ching chong” singing in Time of the Apes is just stupid. As I said in my previous post I love MST3K more than almost anything, but I won’t make excuses for something as obviously questionable (and not to mention simply unfunny) as that moment or any others like it, as incredibly rare as they may be.

Also Neptune Man, I find it incredibly humorous that you are calling anyone else “dense”.

I was watching one of the Japanese episodes recently. I’ve been a HUGE MSTie for many years, but I have to agree. Servo let out this mangled mish-mash of stereotypical Japanese/Chinese sounds attempting to read the credits, then said something about Chinese food -_-; I winced. I studied in Japan so this kind of stuff is really tiresome for me. But it tends to be just a few isolated lines during the credits, so it doesn’t hinder my enjoyment of the episode, but normally the riffs are so urbane it takes me by surprise hearing them say that stuff.

Like 133 Cronkite Moonshot said, I think it’s just naivete (or ignorance, if you like, but not malicious ignorance). Also, right on with this bit: “Why is it so horrible to acknowledge that something might be questionable or in bad taste, while also understanding that it most likely wasn’t done out of any real sense of malice or with actual bad intent?”

What I don’t understand is the aggressive, sensational, sensitive response to such a tame, reasonable take on the situation (to wit, poor taste, but no malice). Sadly, people don’t do nuance well these days, I guess. Some people will start a fight over anything. I’d like to post more ‘round these parts but it always seems like there’s a big argument brewing.

I haven’t seen the full feature yet, but the trailer for CT’s East Meets Watts, though it didn’t have me wincing, did cause me to go ‘huh?’ Namely the line about an Asian boy band being strange or weird (‘Out-of-Sync’). I guess they don’t know about the vast amount of boy groups across East Asia lol

Anyway, back on topic. I’d like a re-release of Rhino Vol. 4, since it’s the only one I don’t have and I don’t feel like paying huge bucks for it. ;P

Oh, and I think 115/Gary Bowden’s idea about a juvenile delinquent boxset is great. I like the idea of themed sets in general.

  35. Chris says:

@RupanIII – The Asian boy band joke is a play on the band N’Sync and the proliferation of Asian movies with poor English dubbing.

While it’s possible Trace’s line could be surprise that Asian boy bands exist at all, to me it’s always sounded more like “what’s an Asian boy band doing in this movie?”

  36. RupanIII says:

    @Chris
Ah, of course! Now I feel silly. The N’Sync part clicked, but somehow out-of-sync referring to poor dubbing escaped me heh Thanks for clearing that up.

@120 the fact is I’ve not been able to locate the short “Mr. BNatural” on a Rhino or Sbout! release of shorts. If indeed this short was released on either vendor, or another vendor,, please let me know! If not… doesn’t Shout! realize…aside from copyright issues…how much money they could make from this release?? Especially combined with “The Amazing Colossal Man”!
