Weekend Discussion Thread: What Pop Singer Would You Like to See Fall from a Lighthouse?

I can’t let this week’s episode guide entry go by without taking our own turn at the little game Joel and the bots play during one of the segments. For the record, as Joel said, we’re not actually pushing them off the lighthouse. “We’re just going to put the fear o’ God into ’em.” Let’s just assume the fall isn’t going to kill them, just scare ’em a bit. (Wink.)

My pick, without any hesitation, is Chris Brown, especially if he could land on a fist-shaped rock.

Have at it!

By the way, keep those thread ideas coming!

#37: I think the point is to get into the spirit of the SKIT from episode #414. OF COURSE it’s childish–that’s the fun of it. I love listening to Joel mimic the singers as the fall to their NEAR-deaths. He’s having fun, and I’m having fun watching him (and Tom and Crow) have fun. It’s fun to have fun!

@50 – I actually like Veggietales. However, with that exception I would list all of the aforementioned “artists” as well as the girl who sings that song which includes that HORRIBLE line “You’re gonna catch a cold from the ice inside you’re soul.” That lyric alone made me weep. I would also nominate Fergie for the line “I’m gonna miss you like a child misses their blanket. ” It’s not as bad as the previous lyric, but the fact that it’s masquerading as deep was enough for me.

Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson (I know he’s already dead, I don’t care), Yoko Ono, Billy Ray and Miley Cyris, Jonas Brothers, Clay Aiken, Celine Dion, Paula Abdul, and anyone who has a music career because they are pretty or can dance.

“I would also nominate Fergie for the line “I’m gonna miss you like a child misses their blanket.” Thank you, happyatmywork, for reminding me of that travesty of a lyric sentence. I say Fergie and every other female singer who basically whines “la la la, I’m so drunk” in a whiny voice and considers it singing.

I realized that I have become my parents, because every pop song makes me want to say to kids, “You consider THAT music?!?” Sigh…

Hard to choose, far too many….um..im pretty oblivious to any modern billboard chartimg act so how about Billy Corgan? Or maybe Isaac Brock? Conor Outburst too…Oh wait theres also the fall out boy guy, thatd be fun to watch him plummet………and also tUNeyardS….wait there’s also Lars Ulrich, not a singer but does merit being thrown from tall heights…
No wait actually I choose Bob Weir…b/c if he gets thrown off the lighthouse a few thousand or so unwashed wannabe hippies will follow him over…a win/win!

@MSTie – Sorry about the reminder. I know how traumatic it must have been for you to hear that. Let me know if you need a hug. :)

I must agree I am starting to sound like my parents. Ever since I got into the Civil Wars, Sufjan Stevens, Iron and Wine, etc., I’ve been a bit of a songwriting snob because I discovered I deserve better than what the radio gives me.

Hold on, I got one more….how about we throw the pro-tools auto-tune app off the lighthouse, that’ll take out 99% of all pop musicians’ careers in one toss!

Others have said it already, but lady gaga. I actually don’t mind pop excess by itself, but it’s the hollow & vapid pretentiousness (‘she’s making a political statement with her shocking outfit!’ etc.) that annoys me. Also, anyone associated with American Idle. :P

This thread is a cornucopia of wit and talent. And it’s not similar in the slightest to the endless comments in other websites whinning about the sempiternal decandence of Music. Taking advance of today’s spirit, “thumbs up if you agree”.

Justin Bieber or Willow Smith: I’m sorry, but just because your dad’s the Fresh Prince does not give you or anyone else the right to subject us to such garbage as I Whip My Hair Back And Forth. For God’s sake, I thought it was an SNL joke when I first heard that this song existed.

Nickelback…definitely. Bieber…ahh, leave the kid alone. He’ll be headlining at Casino Moose Jaw by the time he’s 30. That’s punishment enough.

My choices from today’s music scene:

    Bruno Mars
    Pit Bull
    Ke$ha
    Katy Perry
    Miley Cyrus

OK, basically the playlist of any radio station that advertises “today’s best music.”

Ok, I think we can all agree that Steven Tyler is one weird mamma-jamma. But come on people, he has(had?) one of the greatest voices in rock and roll history. This fact alone saves him, in my mind, from such a horrible fate as a lighthouse fall.
Closet Journey fan. Don’t throw Mr. Perry. If you do then you have ,stopped believing!’
And I use my get out of jail free card on Terry Jacks. Seasons in the Sun makes me well. Good bye to you my trusted friend. *sniff*
In closing let me be the first to toss over the ‘edge’ the most overrated band ever created. U2! Hasta la vista, Bono!

It’s encouraging that not a lot of people picked the good 80’s stuff. I grew up and graduated in ’89 and I am still stuck in the 80’s music wise. Although it’s mostly metal, it’s nice no one said any of the 80’s glam bands. That’s what started it for me. Ahhhh..good times. I miss the 80’s.
