Well, with the preservation thing moving along and CT opening the door for re-riffs with Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, I can see how this would happen!

  4. I guess this would include a VOD version. I mean I could sync it with the MST3K SE version if I had to. Maybe I’ll just wait for the restored blu-ray.

  8. So now CT has to do it for sure, huh? It will be the war of the Manoses.

It’s so weird I was just thinking about this the other day. In an idle moment I thought how fun it would be if CT and RT did a live double feature riffing of Manos…and then I thought who want to watch Manos twice in a row even with stellar riffing.
Should be great…just hope there won’t be as many fart/crude jokes as there were on the recent Twilight riffing though…

Is it really a re-riff since only Kevin was involved in the last one? Sure, Mike was head writer at the time, but the different dynamic between the three performers should make it quite fresh. Also, I’m pretty sure we’re coming up on the twentieth anniversary of the MST3K version of Manos, so it’s appropriate. I’m super excited.

If I were to guess its a Rifftrax Live with Manos HD Print Restoration Project (a partnership of sorts) :-D The guy that is doing the restoration has hinted that Mike/Rifftrax have been in contact with them. In addition, Mike/Rifftrax have hinted they were interested in it back when it was announced.

    CANNOT WAIT!!

A re-do might be hard for fans of the MST3K version, who already know all the riffs from that cut. There’s no way I’m going to pass this up, I just remember the Rifftrax version of Juvenile Delinquency being hard to get into.

    Awesome!!!!!!!!!!

It will be so cool to hear Mike and Bill riff Manos for the first time. And poor Kevin has to do it twice.

Meh. This is sort of a watershed episode of MST, where even non msties know about this. I doesn’t need to be redone, you can’t improve on perfection and there are so many awful movies out there I’ve got to wonder why bother?

    @ Craig # 13

I hope so! I can’t understand why they would want to do it any other way. I wouldn’t be too keen on seeing a faded, blurry, grainy print blown up to a theater sized screen, especially with sub-standard audio.

The movie is already painful enough. It just wouldn’t make much sense to squander the opportunity to use the restored version. With the restoration it wouldn’t just be a “re-riff” but, rather, the dawning of a new “Age of Manos.” Without it will just be dipping their hands back in the MST3K cookie jar.

I’m certain the fellas at Rifftrax are far too savvy to drop the ball on this one!

  24. I have to admit the Master is of mixed minds about this. Why indeed mess with perfection? OTOH, I do understand that RT generally don’t think of the MST3K crowd as being their primary audience for the live events (they’ve said that MOST of their attendees are new or at least younger folks).

My wife and I never pass up the live events, so I suspect we’d go see it, but I really would have preferred a new (at least never riffed before) movie.

“Manos”, for me, was and is SO painful to watch! It’s right up there with “The Wild, Wild World of Batwoman”. Both are on my short list of ones I swore I would never watch again… Sure I bought the most recent release of it, but I was winded after watching it… I’ll have to think about it…

What an interesting move. I have the re-released Shout! version of the movie, and the MST3K Essentials version, so I’m fine with them doing just an MP3 file of it. Of course having it be the next Fathom Event show would also rule. If it is a Fathom event show, they should put some great shorts before the movie for us people that have seen Manos numerous times (which is most of us).

  30. GizmonicTemp says:

Why this is a good idea: First, it’s freaking “Manos”. I’d wager that most of use are commenting on this very site due in LARGE part to “Manos”. Second, in the same way that CT’s re-riffing of “Santa/Martians” took us back to the simpler-time salad-days of MST3K, “Manos” takes us to the same place. Third, as legendary as “Manos” is, you could riff it a dozen times and still have LOTS to say. Fourth, now that “Manos” is slated for re-riffing, NOTHING is off the table. Just imagine how many other “sacred” entries in the Mst3k library, set in stone for so long, can be given new life.
    In conclusion, YAAAAAAAAY!!!!!!!!!

To the people complaining about the Rifftrax doing this, I didn’t hear your cry when CT did the same with Santa Conquers the Martians.
I can’t wait for this riffing, this is so great. But now, this means Joel and co. will have to riff Space Mutiny or Red Zone Cuba, and Mike and co will have to do the same with Monster a Go Go or Eegah.

Let’s not encourage the dawn of an era where all anyone focuses on is re-riffing movies already done. It’s fine if it’s once in a while, but there are a TON of movies that have never been riffed before, so I’m all in favor of new material.

  37. Doug says:

#36: Oh, I definitely agree. I don’t think they should do lots of re-riffing, but it would be cool as maybe an anniversary thing. Next year is the 25th Anniversary of MST3K…

Hmmmm..help me out here, guys. Why am I not jumping out of my chair for this? It’s not devotion to the MST version; in fact, it’s not even my favourite episode (I think the “Sgt Pepper” analogy is quite right–it’s an album I respect greatly, but I don’t love it the way I love “Revolver” or even “Hard Day’s Night”. Same with “Manos”–I am in awe of the achievement, but I had a lot more fun with the Sandy Franks or “Eegah!”). It’s certainly not that I think RT’s not up to the task. It’s just…are we heading for “Manos” overkill? I dunno. I’m watching this one with interest–of course, I’ll purchase it and all (I’m already buying the restoration on DVD). Some of GizmonicTemp’s enthusiasm is rubbing off–but I can’t jump in with both feet, and I so want it to be great. Tell me I won’t be disappointed.

Or tell me that it’s just a show, &c.

  43. #32 – I don’t speak for anyone other than myself, but I didn’t think CT redoing “Santa Claus” was all that great an idea, either (and I have never bought it, unlike most of the other CT stuff).

Yes, there is lots you can say about nearly any truly bad film — but that doesn’t mean it’s worth saying. In many ways I feel this is a lot like the Hollywood remakes of so many classic films. It’s been done to perfection, and redoing it won’t be any better, just different. And there is a lot lost to the experience of “the first time” (even repeat viewings of the MST3K Manos are “first time” in that the riffs are the first ever done). If I had to categorize these things I would say they fall into the “sex with your ex” category. No sex is bad sex, but that doesn’t mean it’s always great or even worth doing (g) .

Hopefully others won’t agree and it will do well (because I always wish the best for Mike and Co. — anyone who makes me laugh with their consistency needs all the support they can get).

Hay, Manos needs all the help it can get, so I’m all in for Rifftrax – and CT – redoing this one.

And yes, I’m also excited about the remastering project! Maybe I need to see a doctor?

  45. GizmonicTemp says:

Blast Hardcheese #38 – Thanks. I like rubbing off on people. Er… Ummm… Look, an eagle!! (running away).
I totally understand your skepticism. Everyone has their favorite episode that they’d love the Mst3k alums to take another crack at. But you also have to look at this from a business perspective. I know many people who have seen only a few Mst3k ep’s, but “Manos” is most always one they’ve seen. Rifftrax re-riffing “Manos” is, in my opinion, a way to get more people interested in Rifftrax. Since we’re using analogies, we could apply Nintendo and Sony here. Sony made the PS3 for the core gamer group, but Nintendo designed the Wii with current casual-only-gamers in mind.
To conclude, I would like to see MORE legacy titles re-riffed. As long as the riffing is good, you don’t have to worry about burnout. Personally, I would love to see Bill’s creative abilities applied to “Eegah” and “Sinbad” and even “Pod People” and “Cave Dwellers”.

While I’m a HUGE fan of both groups (seriously, I’m over 300 pounds)….

There’s an entire world out there of public domain movies and shorts that are begging to be riffed without the need to keep hauling out stuff like this. I understand that we all will have a soft spot in our hearts for Manos, but I’m tired of all the double and triple dips on content.

  48. GizmonicTemp says:

Neptune Man #46 – I certainly didn’t mean to sicken you of Mst3k/CT/RT by implying that’s the ONLY reason for re-riffing “Manos”. My apologies for any ill effects. (What? “Cooking Mama” isn’t hardcore?!)

Tarantulas #47 – That is also a very good point. My soul rejoiced when they FINALLY got around to “Killers from Space” and “Sons of Herc: Land of Darkness” (by the way, an EXCELLENT iRiff by Just Andrew ;-) ) but as much new material as has been released, I think some re-treads are certainly allowed.

I have a few thoughts on this:

They should do “Hired” part 2 with “Manos”.

RiffTrax mav have some cash invested in the “Manos” restoration. This is a good way to recoup some of that investment. Also I wouldn’t be surprised if the restored “Manos” came out on SHOUT FACTORY.

I don’t think there will be a “Can of Worms” scenario happening. This is probably a one-off like CT doing “Santa Clause Conquers the Martians”

What I would like to see some riffing on the Warner-Archives releases I’ve seen lately:
Earth II, Probe, and Genesis II (All from the early 70’s) would be great Rifftrax subjects I think.

Agreed on Gymkata being perfect riffing fodder. They used to say it all the time on MST3k too, usually right after “hi keeba!”.
