@#32 – Like the ex-genius said in #43, a lot of people did complain about the re-riff of Santa Claus v Martians on the CT website. I am generally not in favor of re-riffing but I did purchase the CT re-riff of SCcTM since I had seen the MST episode a million times as part of my regular holiday viewing and wanted to try something different. While the Manos episode is a classic, I have not seen it a million times so I don’t need a re-riff of it, as a disclaimer my opinion of the riffing projects is MST > CT > RT.

Cheapskate Crow #51 – MST >= (RT + CT), given RT != CT.
Plus, I have MST defined as INTEGER*8.

#45 – What are you talking about? The Move has TOTALLY stolen away the casuals. That’s why Move-only games are rocking the NPDs. Or haven’t you noticed?

  5. GizmonicTemp says:

schippers #53 – Wii released 2006, PSMove released 2010. Therefore, no, I didn’t notice that “Move” was stealing casual gamers before 2010.

@49 I agree fully. The original MST3K version of “Manos…” was served up with a short, the stirring conclusion to “Hired!”. When I rewatch Manos, I always watch Hired! along with it, replete with flying elves and “…I’m sobering up, and you’re scaring me!”. As far as I’m concerned, a re-riff of Manos by RiffTraxx just wouldn’t be the same without an intro by the soft an oily Dr. Giggles.

If doing “Manos” brings more people into the MST/Rifftrax/CT fold, then I’m on board. I think what you say makes a lot of sense–I hadn’t really thought of it in gaming terms (so…where that does leave XBox?), but I get the point. Let Torgo ride again!

On topic: As long as this is in conjunction with the remastering project, I’m completely down with this, either as a live riff or as a studio riff.

Off topic: If we’re offering up Gymkata, let’s also get American Ninja out of the way. Or Missing In Action. Or for that matter, almost any of the Golan Globus library (a library I spent many a childhood evening at).

To all the naysayers and “ho-hummmers” out there, I say – bring it on!! Frankly, I think there’s enough “material” (if you can call it that) in Manos that could be riffed many times over, w/fresh laughs all around. In fact, (just blue-skying here), wouldn’t it be great if CT and RT got together for one giant, “expo-fest-o-rama” style super-riff of the beast? I personally would sign over my next paycheck for an opportunity to witness that live! (Ok, maybe not the whole check, but more than a few greenbacks, I promise you). Just a thought from a faithful Mstie/CT/RT glutton. :-D

#55 – was intended to be archly ironic. Oh well. Another failure of text to convey meaning.

#59 – In lieu of a big kaiju-mashup style CT-RT orgy, I think it more likely (and just as enticing) a scenario that a single RT stalwart guests on CT, and vice versa (really has already happened, sort of, with Mary Jo riffing the X-Files movie with Bill).

Okay. Now we’re going to own FOUR copies of Manos (and that includes the double MST3K dip). And when Elvira gets around to putting her version of DVD, that will make five.

This will be the uncut version, right? The riffers will go insane…

    I’m into this.

Now, I’d most like for CT to do some Coleman Francis re-riffing. Now that we know that Frank Connif is the discoverer of Coleman Francis and the man who unleashed his madness onto the world, I think CT is the proper entity to make a re-riff on any of the 3, but most preferentially, Red Zone Cuba.

And now as long as we are in re-riff mode, ‘Robot Monster’ needs it the most. Another one that would be cool is ‘SST Deathflight’.

It really makes sense to do re-riffs because number one, it’s a guaranteed hit if it was a popular episode, and number two, so far it’s been incredibly good – CT’s re-riff of SCCTM was so funny, and way better than the original, which I never watch. That re-riff is definitely in my top three favorite CT episodes.

schippers #60 – Not a problem sir/madam. I did indeed misunderstand. (I thought you were talkin’ smack ’bout my ‘Tendo. :-) [I guess if we REALLY wanted to split hairs and remain off topic, we could say the the Power Glove was the first stab at motion-control. {Shudder}])

Manny (#62): Why stop at “SST”?–Why not overhaul all of the KTMAs, with the exception of the Sandy Frank re-dos from Season 3? I’d love to see them take on quite a few of the KTMA films.

I tried to watch “Manos” and bailed out way early. If it comes out on a RiffTrax bluray I’ll buy it and see it for the first time.

#70: The same happened to me, it took me three times to finally get in it. Also, I don’t want to offend anyone, but I don’t feel this is the “Citizen Kane of the Mst3k episodes”, like some people say. I think the Joel era has better episodes, like Warrior of the Lost World, Cave Dwellers, Wild Rebels, Earth vs the Spider, Pod People, It Conquered the World, Mitchell. Of course, it’s all matter of opinion.

This should be interesting, but I doubt it’ll be funnier than the MST3K version.I do agree that they should re-do the KTMA movies, except the Gamera ones for obvious reasons, but would like Rifftrax to tackle Robot Holocaust.

  22. Graboidz says:

Seriously?? I know “Reboots”, “Re-imaginings” and “Remakes” seems to be all the rage right now, but do we really need Rifftrax to jump into the fray as well? One trip to the Manos well was enough…just let it be.

Hope no “guest” riffers. I’d like to leave this one to the professionals. Attended the Plan 9 with Frank & Trace in Seattle and some comedian (don’t remember who). Could have been great without the comedian.

I haven’t fished through all the comments so I don’t know if anyone brought any of this up already, but I’m thinking that maybe this Rifftrax audio track might actually be ON one of the new restorations whenever they come out, and perhaps even that Legend Films could actually be lined up to distribute said restored release? Though if these guesses are at all accurate I hope they are working with the guy at “Manos in HD”, and not the guy doing the new psuedo-directors cut version and sequel. Nothing against the other guy’s project, but I was planning on buying the “Manos in HD” restoration anyway, and I really want whatever one would include the Rifftrax version (not that any of them actually will for certain), but I could care less about buying the altered version, and I don’t want to have to buy more than one blu-ray.

Maybe I’m just a total psychopath, but I have never once flinched through the veiwing of ANY movie done up by MST3k. Even when I thought the KTMA episodes would be too old school for my tastes I started with SST Deathflight and, while it admittedly has the largest list of then A-listers, I can safely say I could watch any single riffed movie numerous times. Hell, I’ve even watched Birdemic WITHOUT the RiffTrax!

I have been waiting to pop my Manos cherry. Maybe I should hold off a little longer…

#74: His name is Dana Gould. He’s an important figure in the LA alternative comedy scene. He’s also a comedy genius. Also, Open up your MST3K Amazing Colossal Episode Guide and turn to page 171. The Brains are fans of his. I wasn’t at the show, so for all I know he stunk up the place (anyone can have an off night), but show some respect, for goodness sake.

I’m of the opinion that if Mike and company put this on a RiffTrax DVD (I’ve recently become rather fond of the Live ones), I will have no choice but to buy the thing. But it had better be something along those lines because I have no idea where to get a non-Misty version to go along with one of their audio-only releases.

Maybe they should release a new version of MST3K: The Essentials with The Rifftrax version of Manos: Hands of Fate and the Cinematic Titanic version of Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.

  34. Kathy says:

    Um…why?

The re-hash of SCCTM by CT made at least some sense since they had to cut the film down to fit it into the MST3k episode. We actually got more of Manos in the MST3k episode than you can currently buy as the opening is missing from all of those prints.

If they want to do a “throwback” movie how about The Green Slime or the movies from two “missing” KTMA episodes – Invaders From the Deep or Revenge of the Mysterions.

Hell…how about anything from the KTMA days? I think Hanger 18 is PD. And Shout! could talk to Sandy Frank about getting the rights for Humanoid Woman….

If it’s a live show they load up with shorts and Lowtax’s daughter (who somehow magically remained 5 years old between her first appearance on Reefer Madness Live on 8-10-10 and Jack the Giant Killer on 8-17-11) HASN’T made any more videos, I’ll go see it. But, a file or a VOD I have to think about.

ugh, am i the only one that doesn’t understand what the hype is about that movie in the first place? It’s just a run of the mill bad movie.

  39. GizmonicTemp says:

Tartujik #89 – No, you’re not the only one and you’re right, there are tons of horrible horrible movies out there. But what makes this one special is its lore and legacy. If accounts are true, “Manos” was made on a dare, by people who had zero movie experience, starring people who had little/no experience, had zero budget, was advertised as a sure-fire blockbuster, was exposed, and led the the public humiliation of most of those involved with it. Fast-forward to modern times, we see on MST3K, it’s a bad movie, but it’s that certain kind of bad that stands out for the reasons I’ve described above. It even stands out against other movies like, for example, “Bride of the Monster”. Why? Because with Ed Wood, you know what you’re gonna get and there’s a certain acceptance and charm. Take another movie like “Fire Maidens from Outer Space”, which I consider a period piece, meaning it was just like every other movie coming out at that time and it at least had some budget and the people involved had some clue, therefore we accept it’s badness.
“Manos” is/was something completely unique in every aspect of its being and that’s why we latch onto it.
    … My goodness. I went on a bit there, didn’t I?

Robot Monster is one of my favorite MST3K episodes so I have to agree with you there.

Anyway, while I’m not thrilled about Rifftrax doing Manos again, I hope this leads to them riffing on Bela Lugosi Meets A Brooklyn Gorilla or Invasion Of The Bee Girls.

@85 Chances are they’ll be riffing on the restored version of Manos, which is “more complete” than both the MST episode and the current public domain offerings.

And it’ll look amazing, too: http://www.manosinhd.com/

  46. Kali says:

You know, I still would like to see a complete riff of Commando Cody. They stopped in the middle of episode nine because “the film broke.” Yeah, it’s not going to happen (Joel always said they got sick of it by Episode 5), but we can always dream. It’s not as long as some serials, so they could probably play it as a two-parter.

Robot Monster has GOT to be riffed anew. It’s one of the few Season One episodes I would love to see done with a full staff of writers. The thought of a fifty-year-old overweight stuntman in a cheap ape outfit has got to get the juices flowing.

And then Hanger 18 from the KTMA era. Just because.
