Cinematic Titanic Showing in Belfast

Apparently there was a showing of a Cinematic Titanic episode at the Belfast Film Festival in Northern Ireland. Here’s a report — from the future! (Note the date.)

They do the date and the month in a different order in Europe…

I’m surprised by the low turnout. Was it not advertised or is MST3k an American thing? I would have thought it would have been a pretty big event over there.

The review mentions “canned laughter.” Does the word “LIVE” on the DVD cover mean something different over there? Or are they just disputing the claim it is a live recording?

MST3K is a cult? Do I have to wear special nike sneakers and wait for the Hale-Bopp comet to come back? Do we get to drink Kool-aid? I like purple.

#7: It would be a cult if we were willing to committ human sacrifices in order to reclaim an ancient mystical city and chasing a wimpy boys across Canada.

Joel himself said it last Saturday: MSTies are a cult, and we’re the high priests.

As for the low turnout, I imagine a public showing of most cult shows from the UK and surrounding countries would get the same reaction in the U.S. Give ’em time, they’ll discover it.

MST3k didn’t really get much time on TV outside the US, I don’t think. It doesn’t surprise me that there’d be low turnout at a European event.

Hi folks, I was the author of the review. The phrase ‘canned laughter’ was added after submission by the editor of the website – a small but important error. Of course I realise that the laughter came from the recorded live audience.

It’s quite humbling that my review ended up on this fansite, I’m absolutely chuffed to bits. Really hope you enjoyed it apart from that gaff.

In terms of the low turnout, yes, it was a crying shame. Sadly the promotion was relatively minimal and the screening clashed with a couple of other more high profile events of the Film Festival (one of which was a screening of underwater Nazi zombie flick SHOCK WAVES on a boat). MST3K does, however, have a huge cult following here.

Oh, as mentioned in the first comment we do indeed write the date in a different order in Europe.

Again, thanks for reading and posting the review here.

You have to remember that both Monty Python and “Doctor Who” didn’t do well when they were initially pitched in the U.S. I figure once there’s a bit more exposure in the U.K., MST, CT & RT will catch on.

Sure, they may not get all the references, but it took me decades before I knew who Reginald Maudling was, so it balances out.

Thanks dudes! Yessiree, the idea of screening Shock Waves on a tugboat is indeed pretty awesome, would have loved to have gone along. I showed it at an exploitation night I used to run a few years back, decked the whole place out like a submarine. Was pretty rad if I may say so myself.

I may stick around here a while, in a massive MST3K mood since the CT show the other night. Might rent out a family friend’s ol’ movie theatre and screen a few episodes myself. It is a great place, dripping in red velvet and covered in horror/sic if posters of the late 50s. The owners have spent over 50 years making their own b movie shorts, shall link to them if anyone is interested in a Belfast take on 50s Americana!

I believe that MST3K had a very limited showing on the UK Scifi channel in the early 00s. I’ve only managed to turn one person on to the show, as I’m a geek with very few friends who own even fewer multi region players.

Oh and the movie turns up very rarely too. I know a group in Southampton tried to do a riffing session at a cinema for Anaconda but I’d bet they never heard of MST3K
