More than a Passing Resemblance … “Cartoon Lagoon”

This doesn’t just look a LITTLE like MST3K…

The YouTube page says it is coming to DVD this fall.

And also a passing resemblance to Cartoon Dump. Do we know who is working on it?

Cartoon Lagoon…where is that again? Is that right off the Intellectual Property Lawsuit Inlet? Or perhaps I’m thinking of the body connected to Temporary Restraining Order Canal?

I might have to look into this…. it’s not a bad idea, making fun of old cartoons.

  8. Oh dude, they’re totally ripping off It Came from Hollywood!

Emulation is the sincerest form of flattery!
I do really like the “art” of the show, what with the plush puppets with animated faces. Cute!

This is nothing like MST3K. In the theater their silhouettes are on the left side.

Even MST3K thought of riffing on old cartoons first. (“Robot Rumpus”)

This wasn’t ripped off from MST3K, you silly billies. You can tell because you can’t see space through those portholes at all, only water. Also, the silhouettes are rounder, and I think that’s a totally different Gumby cartoon.

I’ve looked up a couple of advance reviews, such as there are, and others seem to have picked up the MST/Cartoon Dump vibe from this. D’you think Jim Mallon has cause to complain? I can’t be sure if they’re actually going to riff on the cartoons, or just show them–after all, they seem to be running the gamut from genuine classics to stinkers. Sampo, could you keep us updated as you find out more, especially it looks like it’s going to be an underwater, cartoon version of our favourite cowtown puppet show.

Well…. it’s no “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea” so Gypsy wouldn’t be pleased.

Wow. Just wow. The audacity of someone to blatantly rip off MST3K like this. If The Film Crew was promptly shut down, I can’t see how this could not be as well.

  17. Neptune Man says:

Seems interesting. The only two things similar to a cartoon were Gumby and a Case of Spring Fever, and maybe the intros to Catalina Caper and Moon Zaro Two.
And for all the people who are scandalized for the rip off, you must also believe that Joel Hodgson invented the concept of riffing movies on his garage back in Minnesota. Good Lord, you are fans of a comedy show that taught us to relax, but switch to humorless fanboy in a minute.

    @ Neptune Man,

I don’t see anyone getting “scandalized” at all — I see a lot of people kind of smiling knowingly and and having a little poke at this new cartoon show.

I’d say we *are* relaxing and just doing a little good-natured ribbing or needling here.

Or, at most, taking some pot-shots more at Jim Mallon for being a bit too sue happy than taking shots at a cartoon show which was clearly created by some people who have some fond memories of the show.

Speak for yourself, Stressfactor. I was so scandalized I said “silly billies,” profanity so strong that I’m surprised it made it through moderation!

Also, I’m glad Neptune Man pointed out Joel invented riffing on his garage. Seems uncomfortable, but maybe it was a flat roof.

I’m stoked for this as long as the writing on the riffing is good. If we can’t have MST3K proper, I’ll take this. Hell, make this a gateway drug of sorts for kids. “Hey dad, there’s this really awesome show where they make fun of cartoons! Have you ever seen anything like it?”

  22. Richard the Lion-Footed says:

Just repeat to yourself it is just a show, I really should really just relax . . .

The REAL question is, why didn’t Cartoon Network come up with this?
It would be the most “original” programming they had in a long, long time.

I want to like this so badly. I hope it’s good!

And Richard, I had the SAME thought – At first, I thought it really was a Cartoon Network show. I wonder if the people who put it together are current or former employees? It’s just very CN-esque to me.

  24. Fred Burroughs says:

This could be good, if: it’s smart, funny and has some heart/nostalgia element to it. Joel’s bots worked because he was homey and warm, if a little unhinged, and this as a kids’ show could really be a slightly kinder and productive (“life-affirming!”) version of MST. OR it could be a contrived mess with bland hollywood re-tread humor and politically correct gestapo preachiness….we’ll see.

Yeah, well…. MST3K host segments kind of resemble an 1950’s show called “Johnny Jupiter”.

There’s nothing new under the sun.

The style reminds me of The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack, a wonderful, albeit short lived, cartoon series. I would recommend it to anyone.

  27. ARCH HALL 3 says:

Let the ” FLAME WAR” commence ! Any advance release date for a dvd copy? Maybe the MST3K crew could make ” guest” appearances? I wonder what classic (?) cartoons will be ” riffed” ? Maybe they could “riff” classic commercials too? I am all for re-introducing classic( or not ) cartoons and movies anyway possible. MST3K, Film Crew, Rifftrax, Cinematic Titanic, Son of Svengoolie are long time favorites, maybe this one will be too someday?

  28. Josh says:

I saw nothing infringing until they had the theater shot. They may be trying to hedge their bets by having the characters halo-lit (so it’s not technically a silhouette), but I think there’s enough there for a case. I want more riffing, and I definitely want more Shadowrama-esque stuff, but this seems to be crossing a line unless someone from MST3k is involved in some capacity.

They seem to be searching the murky waters of public domain cartoons…
(And they won’t find it in the Popeyes or Supermans.)

I don’t get why everyone thinks litigation is in order here. If something like Incognito Cinema Warriors XP exists, I don’t see why Cartoon Lagoon can’t as well.
