Weekend Discussion Thread: Double/Triple Features

Alert MSTie Andrew noticed the same thing I did…

Thread poster Mitchell “Rowsdower” Beardsley, in our discussion of “12 to the Moon”, mentioned an Anthony Dexter triple feature. Tempting, but what are some other favorites? What shows just go well together? For my money, back-to-back eps “King Dinosaur” and “First Spaceship on Venus” go well together as they are not only similar genres, but are good examples of the show’s ascent. In that vein, “Boggy Creek” and “Track of the Moonbeast” remind me how great the final days were.

My double feature pick: Catalina Caper and Horror of Party Beach. Lots of teener action.
As for a triple feature –and, wow, if you can manage a triple feature of MST3K you are hardcore (but if you frequent this site, I guess you are) — I would suggests a tribute to 1987: Alien From L.A., Robot Holocaust and Space Mutiny.

What would you pick? Use any criteria you want.

@#13 – trickymutha, I’m so glad you put ZAAT instead of Blood Waters of Dr. Z! ZAAT was actually the original title of the film. I saw it in the theatre when I was a little girl, and I distinctly remember that.

That’s another idea for the Weekly Discussion Thread, if it hasn’t already been done: Have you ever seen an MST3K movie before it was on MST3K? A lot of people seem to have mentioned seeing various movies before MST3K got them, and it might be interesting to hear their stories.

As for my feature picks, I’d do a steamy Southern locales triple feature with Attack of the Giant Leeches, Blood Waters of Dr. Z/ZAAT, and Boggy Creek II. A double feature I’d pick would be Fire Maidens of Outer Space and Last of the Wild Horses, just because they have my favorite single-theme host segments (Timmy and Star Trek’s Mirror Mirror).

Thumbs up on Manos Bride’s idea of seeing the unMSTed version before (or after, like my favorite commentary on SQUIRM).

I believe you’re thinking about 403-City Limits for the nude bathing in the water tower obscured by Joel’s umbrella.

The movie with the naughty lady in the watertower was City Limits.

Maybe we could do a double feature of naughty bits covered by the Brains…City Limits and Devil Fish.

God help me, but I’ve actually enjoyed a deliberate Joe Don Baker double feature of Mitchell and Final Justice.

Otherwise, Dick Contino: Daddy-O and Girls Town
80s Sword & Sandal Smugfest: Outlaw and Deathstalker
O Canada: Pod People and Final Sacrifice
O…Mexico?: Black Scorpion, Robot Vs. The Aztec Mummy, & Samson Vs. The Vampire Women
…and a hopelessly personal one: The Two Episodes That Made Me A Permanent Fan: I Accuse My Parents and The Day The Earth Froze.

Any two of the Russo-Finnish movies would go well together, but my fave is “Day the Earth Froze” with “Jack Frost” watched in winter time, preferably with some nice warm noshings to enjoy.

“Hercules” and “Hercules Unchained” aren’t bad together either, especially because both use the same actors. However, it’s a tough decision which order to watch them. “Unchained” is the second movie, but the first one shown on Mst3k!

@ck: you asked the episode with the nude woman in the water tower, that’s City Limits.

End of Season 8 triple feature: Space Mutiny, Time Chasers, Overdrawn at the Memory Bank.

3 of my all time favorites, and possibly the best 3 episode stretch the show ever had.

I concur on the Ben Murphy double feature of Riding With Death and Being From Another Planet, but I’d also like a TV movie triple feature of Riding With Death, San Francisco International and the Clu Gulager episode of Master Ninja.

I keep hint-hinting about getting Being released along with Riding With Death, but so far the universe (which controls all copyright) is unresponsive.

Peggy Webber double feature: Screaming Skull and Space Children. I have a fondness for Peggy because I also happen to be a Dragnet fan. No one can play “worried woman” like Peggy.

Bryant Haliday double feature: Devil Doll and the Projected Man. The guy only made a few movies and MST3K did two of them! Would love them to do Horror on Snape Island.

Japanese “children’s hero” movies: Prince of Space and Invasion of the Neptune Men

Kero 61: The universe is crumbling; we have a Peggy Webber fan. I did recently see her on Dragnet ’68. I thought, “A shrill, worried mother; could it be the mom from Space Children?” I agree with the ACEG: it was cruel of the movie (S. Skull) to offer her as the titillation.

My triple feature would be King Dinosaur, Manchurian Candidate, and Giant Spider Invasion. Pretend it’s a prequel/sequel with the lead scientist from Dinosaur now in the Army top brass, best friend to Frank Sinatra (same actor). Then After M. Candidate, pretend young blond Josie somehow survived and moved to Wisconsin and became the alcoholic Ev. (same actress.) Viola.

How ’bout a sheriff Gene Roth triple helping: Earth vs Spider, then Giant Leeches, then either Tormented or Rebel Set. Probably Rebel Set, so you can wash it down with the whole “Who is Merritt Stone” conundrum.

@ #51 – Manos Bride – great idea! A friend took me to see Laserblast when it came out since we both were sci-fi fans. He apologized profusely afterwards!

Here’s another: triple feature of movies with characters you just want to reach out and slap… Hobgoblins, Kitten with a Whip, and Boggy Creek II. Let the hate flow. (in a constructive way.)

I would do an acid dream triple feature, with TISCWDTSLABMUZ, Magic Voyage of Sinbad, and Bride of the Monster
(they all have sort of a “What the?” quality, but incredibly strange creatures would fill the 60s fever dream aspect, Sinbad would fill the Eastern lavish stories crazy water nymph aspect, and Bride of the Monster would round us out with a “classic” Ed Wood 50s monster movie vibe,

Lately I’ve been doing double features on Friday nights, consisting of the two episodes CC was showing this weekend (or close enough) 20 years ago. This week’s was Lost Continent and Killer Shrews. Next week is Hellcats and Hercules Unchained.

@ #21: That was City Limits, in which Joel did use an umbrella as a Censor Prop. Though there is a brief second where his positioning is off and the gal gives us a full moon. Not that I was going out of my way looking for anything like that.

@ #56: Wasn’t Pod People shot in Spain? Now Zombie Nightmare was shot in Canada.

    I don’t believe it. I inspired a thread topic.

    I agree whole heartedly with:

The Side Hackers, Wild Rebels, and The Hellcats.

    and any Allison Hayes trifecta.

Ok seriously, I’d do a Walk-A-Thon Triple Feature: Lost Continent, King Dinosaur and Fire Maidens of Outer Space.

I would make a giant sandwich. That’s a hearty slice of Village of the Giants on tasty Amazing Colossal Man/Beast buns, hold the goo. Oh, and JUMBO fries. A perfect meal for any still-growing boy or girl.

I myself have conducted several MST double-features over the years with some of my favorite episodes. I’ve done “Outlaw” with “Deathstalker and the Warriors from Hell”, two movies full of bad acting, cardboard sets, and terrible swordfights. I also combined “Operation Double 007” with “Danger!! Death Ray”, two of my favorite Italian spy movies – and you could throw “Secret Agent Super Dragon” in there to make it a triple. :)

I’d do a gross double feature with The Incredible Melting Man and Squirm. What’s the third grossest MST movie? Mitchell? Giant Spider Invasion?

    For me,

probably Girl in Lovers Lane and Violent Years. Both have some good teenage girl crime in it.

@75 Alex: There is no “teenage girl crime” in The Girl in Lovers’ Lane. Maybe you meant Racket Girls ?

  29. Fred Burroughs says:

Alex 75: maybe add Teenage Crime Wave, which oddly enough does feature crime perpetrated by teens, and criminal females. Racket Girls is a good choice too, Arch.

I might do an All-Star triple feature:
Space Travelers w Gregory Peck followed by
City Limits w James Earl Jones, and
Overdrawn at the Memory Bank w Raul Julia.

    My ideas:

Donald Pleasence vs. Annoying Heroes: Warrior of the Lost World/Puma Man

Double Feature in the Third Dimension: Robot Monster/Revenge of the Creature

    K. Gordon Murray “Triple Main Event” Supercard: The Robot vs. the Aztec Mummy/Santa Claus/Samson vs. The Vampire Women

John Phillip Law Double Play: Space Mutiny/Danger: Diabolik

Yeah, it’s been a while since I’ve seen that episode so my memory must have played tricks on me. Racket Girls seems more appropriate.
