Well, I purchased it tonight and I’ve got to tell you guys that this thing is goofier than Santa and the Ice Cream Bunny! I Loved it and will be adding to my Boxing Day MST3K/CT/Rifftrax Marathon!

The announcement about the repeats is fantastic news. I would have to see a list, but I am 99% sure that Plan 9 is the only Rifftrax theater show that I have ever missed. Now I can rectify that oversight at the end of January. Cool beans.

I know I sound like a broken record here, but I’ll wait for the DVD on the Christmas shorts. It looks staggeringly goofy, though.

As for the remotes, I’m there.

  6. @5 – If you’re holding out because you want the physical copy and all of that, I get it…but the download to burn on this one actually has the full menu/chapter select treatment going on. (That’s n FYI for everyone :) )

You get it, Casey? I sure don’t — and I’m an old Grandpa who still buys tons of blu-rays (but then converts them to files I can play from my media players around the house).

Unless Kenneth is even older than me (doubtful) he really needs to move into the 20th Century. Oh, wait, that was LAST century .

The problem is that my computer is a laptop that’s nearly 10 years old and really doesn’t handle downloads & playbacks too well. Once I pay down a few debts, I’ll see about getting a new model, but that’s going to take a while.

And I’ve been 39 years old for several years now. Take from that what you will.

I can understand Kenneth. Up until recently I would just look at the VOD titles longingly. BUT NO MORE! I can now download and burn a CD and it’s fantastic! Finally watched “Boy in the Plastic Bubble” 3 years after everyone else, but it’s fantastic. Upgrade when you can. It’s worth it.

Well, in these economic times I can well understand anyone who says that money is the issue (although my basic comeback to that would be that spending it on RT is the least of anyone’s priorities. Except that then laughter is something precious and even during the depression folks went every week to the movies just to keep sane. So it goes…).

So maybe it’s Tom (#9) that I don’t get — again, why make something physical out of these things. Media players are dirt cheap (even cheaper than a DVD player) and if you have the ability to download and burn to a CD you sure have the ability to download to, say, a flash drive (assuming money really is the answer).

I’m not trying to be pedantic here — I’m a huge believer in living and let live, and also (in particular) that you can do whatever you want with your hard earned money, even if it might not be something I would do. But I’m mostly speaking as someone who now looks around at the literally thousands of DVDs I have and says “why in the heck did I spend the time and money and energy on all these?”

It’s a bit like someone starting off today to build up a CD music collection. Do you see why that’s just plain crazy? If so, then eventually (if not sooner) you’ll also see why it’s pretty insane to try and get a physical media collection of any kind going. One day you’ll look around and think to yourself the same thoughts I do (but I also realize that almost no one can learn from another’s experience, and young people have to find out the hard way that perhaps, just perhaps, older heads may know a little better).

    Soapbox mode off .

In a shameless attempt to change the direction of this thread–Did anyone see the footage from “Santa Clause” being used in this film? What the-what the? I even caught a glimpse of a scene of Santa in his magical cloud castle from “Santa Clause” with Merlin? Was this omitted from the MST3K episode all those years ago? Was there a Merlin subplot in that one that was chopped out for time? I have so many questions…

I just watched SVOM and it’s very funny! I don’t know what was more disturbing though: the shorts or the ending with Kevin, Bill, and Mike…

    Merry Christmas, everyone!

    @ Kenneth morgan

You don’t have to download and burn. You can stream it. If you can, say, stream netflix movies and that kind of thing you’re good to go. Unless you get your internet through string and tin can ; )

    If I may….

It’s amazing to me how lucky we are to still have such amazing new MST-related material. Rifftrax has been a godsend for a MSTie like me. I recently caught up on some VOD’s, watched The Guy From Harlem and Nightmare at Noon….and I absolutely loved them both.

Can’t wait to watch the Santa special.

Oops…I meant “Santa Claus”…the Mexican film from this weeks episode guide. There is footage from it in the trailer. Weird. I assume fellow MSTIES spotted it too. I looked up the movie on wikipedia and Merlin is in the cast, strange I don’t remember any footage of a Merlin character in that episode from MST3K. Perhaps everyone knows the story behind this and I’m just out of the loop. Can’t wait to watch this one!

One side note–has satellite news done a favorite rifftrax/CT movie yet? They should. so many Rifftrax to choose from, there’s a few of the VODs I don’t have, and I’d like to know which are the best of the best…

    #13 (losingmydignity)

Problem is my computer gets overloaded easily. I can watch streaming video for about 10 minutes or so. Then, the overload happens and, while audio comes through OK, video generates into a pretty much still images. I’m still trying to figure out how to work this, but I probably won’t have any luck until I get a new computer.

First short broke the goofy meter. Insane. Second one, also insane. Third short, a tad less insane. Nothing says Christmas more than a deranged wolf with the worst case of TMJ in history, a shrill skunk and a mush-mouthed sword happy cat.

I went to the Santa’s Village in Dundee. Don’t recall the Ice Cream bunny’s looming presence or the aforementioned trio of anthropomorphic nightmares. Must’ve been their day off.

Wow… even more insane than the Ice Cream Bunny.

Probably the best Rifftrax all year.

  22. Droppo says:

One of the best Rifftrax releases yet. First of all, Santa Claus is my favorite Mike ep of MST3K so it was a huge treat to be back in that (insane) territory. Secondly, this made Santa Claus look like a lucid faithful telling of the Christmas story. And, I love it when Mike, Kevin and Bill appear on camera….whether it’s an intro like for the equally hilarious The Guy From Harlem or the interludes for this one….it’s always a treat.

Finally, I’m just amazed that they actually found a Christmas tale SIGNIFICANTLY more bizarre than the Ice Cream Bunny, Santa vs. Martians or the Devil.

    Well done, Rifftrax!

P.S. Every time the action reached its apex of weirdness and the guys wished us a hearty “Merry Christmas” was a laugh out loud moment for me. Favorite moments of this installment.

Even with all the madness swimming around these shorts, I still don’t understand why the director chose to include footage of the “elf” failing to screw the doll head on properly. All he had to do was snip a few frames and the illusion stands. Yet the doll head just pops off (numerous times), suggesting total elf failure and a lack of quality product.

Bought SVOM for $5, and so glad I did. Bizarre doesn’t even cover it.

I’d like to go to the Plan 9 rewatch, but am a little leery about paying full price. Maybe a knockdown to $10 is in order? (And yeah, I’m sure it’s Fathom’s call on pricing.)

  29. In the spring, while working on the latest Mystery Science Theater 3000 bonus features, I introduced Mike Nelson and Kevin Murphy to K. Gordon Murray’s obscure trilogy of Santa’s Village shorts… with the hopes that they would select one of the them as their holiday RiffTrax release. Imagine my surprise… THEY SELECTED ALL OF THEM! For those of you who wish to know more about this bizarre trilogy of shorts, be assured… I explore them in great detail within the K. Gordon Murray documentary (which is due to be released next year). I even have ‘behind the scenes’ footage, if you can believe that!

My DW and I watched this yesterday evening, at our Christmas feast, and it was *very* bizarre. Loads of fun, though.

I agree with those here who enjoyed seeing Mike and company — I really wish they could do this on all their VODs (not the shorts as that’s really not practical). It’s one of the things that made MST3K so special, the breaks between the movie gives you a good chance to do a reality check, so to speak. I know it’s a ton more work (and the logistics are difficult) but it really brings the presentations to life. I actually think it wouldn’t even need to be scripted — just seeing them shake their heads over how weird some of the stuff is they are commenting on is worth it.

Then this morning we re-watched the first Christmas VOD they did (not their live show — we watched that as well yesterday). And, of course, we see them there as well. So even if it’s only once a year, it’s nice to have their shiny faces peek out at us (although they really do need to do something about powdering those faces).

@millej89 Merlins does appear in the MST3K cut of Santa Claus, as he’s the one who helps Santa out when he’s stuck in a tree and is about to be witnessed by a number of people that have been awaken by Pitch.

As for the bit with Merlin in the second short: that is indeed footage cut from the MST3K version of the film. Basically, the cut scenes feature Santa picking up the sleeping powder and disappearing flower from Merlin, as well as him visiting Vulcan to pick up the key that can be used to open any door.
