Updated List of Weekend Discussion Threads

It has been almost two years since I’ve done this, and it’s time. I really don’t remember doing “brushes with greatness,” “favorite credit sequences” and “favorite costume worn by a bot” twice…

…but that’s what happens when you don’t keep up. I will try to do better.

As always, if you think of a good one, email me.

How about TV Series that deserve a commentary track.

My suggestions have all been ignored, so I’m bitter. Wow, there are 247 of these divided by 52 weeks which comes to 4.75 years. We sure are a chatty bunch of puppet show fans.

I got one – when did’ja get hooked? Many of us who didn’t watch from the beginning may have been flipping channels, maybe even watched for a second and dismissed it before really “getting” it. Or perhaps a rabid friend held you hostage, eyes glued open, and exposed you to a marathon. What was that shining episode/moment when you said “I can’t live without this?”

The list is so long, I can’t remember if these are covered…

    1. Most uncomfortable episode to watch.
    2. Dinner and a Mistie combos
    3. Episodes kids like (my 8 year old loves Hobgoblins)
    4. The perfect all-weekend episode line up
    That’s all I got…

Oh wait! I have one more: Actors you hate because of MST3K (John Agar,John Agar, John Agar, John Agar, John Agar, John Agar, John Agar, John Agar, John Agar, John Agar, John Agar… )

Sampo, if you have nothing better to do, you could put hyperlinks on all the above topics to the actual discussions. Yeah, I know, you do have a REAL life too……

Discussion topic idea: Why did you pick your MST3Kinfo screen name? As for me, I live in Albuquerque, and “Albuquerque Turkey” was one of the songs on the Southern Galaxy radio station during “Deadly Mantis”.

  15. Creeping-Death says:

Death Rat? What was that thread about? JCC, in order to do that thread, you’d have to include Joel moments, too. Or a series about most insufferable moments, eg. Kevin moments, Trace moments, etc.

  16. PirateJoe says:

Funny, I was just wondering if you ever did a brushes with greatness kind of discussion. Actually, I was thinking of more a Six Degrees of MST thing. One of my coworkers knew all the extras on Horror of Party Beach. The closest I got to that was when I ran into Clint Eastwood at Whole Foods one night.

Let’s see, how about an SAT essay type theme:

Compare and contrast MST3000 unerotic erotic segments
to The Film Crew (many in the SoL) In the Film Crew
the interminable strip show segments in Hollywood After Dark
or for that matter any of the other three FCs.

Or, compare and contrast host segments in MST3000 vs. The Film Crew.

Please remember,an SAT score is not an absolute value. It is a scaled score to indicate your performance in comparison with that of the other 2 million students who take this test every year.

Scores can go up and down according to how you feel on the day of the test or how well you have prepared.

    See, no pressure. :)

  19. Jbagels says:

@15, Creeping Death. Death Rat was a book written by Mike Nelson.

I like the best 5 minute stretch and where did your name come from topics that someone suggested. My name’s not MST related but i’d love to hear everyone else’s stories.

  20. Kenneth Morgan says:

I suggested a while back that, since we did “Death Rat”, we might discuss Kevin’s “A Year at the Movies”. You might want to hold that for a long weekend, though.

I was just teasing BenMurphyIsMellow. I love Mike. I just think it’s lame to add smiley/squinting faces so my comment looks more hostile.

Now lets take a pinch hit, pop in some Deep Purple and get this secret government project on the road!

  22. My fault JCC.

Since all you have to do now is say you wish the guitars were louder on a Fleetwood Mac song and there will be hordes lining up to declare you the Anti-Christ, my sarcasm radar has broken down completely.

I’m also taking your advice my friend. Space Truckin’ will be launched into my brain in exactly 5,4,3,2…

I think that’s the Dead, Ben, not that I’m complaining. Be sure and insert Crow’s extended solo in there and watch the moon come out!

  24. BenMurphyIsMellow says:

You are absolutely correct snowdog, please accept my apologies.

Although Quicksilver Messenger Service can also be used for getting into a stone groove and richly mellowing out.

  27. Goshzilla says:

And it was as if Jerry WILLED it! I love that Gypsy’s a Deadhead. (For one segment at least.) It just makes sense somehow.

Something I’ve been meaning to suggest: Recently as I was leaving the convenience store I spotted a fella getting out of his car wearing the old MST3K spaghetti ball sweatshirt. I didn’t have the opportunity to say hi, but if I had, I got to thinking that there should be an internationally recognized greeting between MSTies, sort of like a secret handshake. Something that says “Hey there, fellow MST3K fan. Keep on truckin.” Maybe Hikeeba? It already starts with hi. Or maybe something more elaborate, like spy codephrases: “The golden spiderduck flies tonight.” “Yes, but only until the squat, crimson pig shoots it down.”

  28. JCC says:

It’s gotta be “Hikeeba!” and the response should be “Gymkata!”

    Or if you’re drunk “Hi-ba-keebala!”…

  29. BenMurphyIsMellow says:

    How about this:
1st person “You know you want me baby!”
2nd person: “I KNOW!!!!!!!” (From devil fish – poor Bob.)

  30. eegah says:

How about worst MST3K movie songs?

  31. Goshzilla says:

We definitely should encourage people to approach complete strangers and say “You know you want me, baby.”

Naturally, the obvious response is “Nobody gets me, baby. I’m the wind.”

  32. Dr. Batch says:

Some of those were my suggestions. Nice.

  33. fatbarkeep says:

I agree with Bob (not Bob)
I was a latecomer to MST but it is now burned into my brain for life and I couldn’t be happier.
I always saw the title and assumed it was just basically showing old bad movies with skits peppered in between commercial breaks, sort of like “The Ghoul” or “Sir Graves Ghastly”
    Had no idea about “riffing”
And to JCC: hi-ba-kee-bala cracks me up every freaking time!
*Keeping my crank turned to Frank*

  34. Bob (NotThatBob) says:

Thanks, barkeep! Yeah, I didn’t even have cable for alot of MST’s earlier years. Apart from skipping channels and catching a bit of “Alien from L.A.” at my brother’s house once, my first exposure was the MST3K Hour – had no idea who the clueless old guy was hosting it…

  35. Steve K says:

Well, we’ve done musical covers and songs, but we haven’t done best musical riffs. The rules would be:

    1. it has to be a riff performed in the theater.
    2. it has to be sung/performed, not just spoken or referred to.

The one I’ll always remember happened when I re-discovered MST3k on Sci-Fi. There’s a scene in Quest of the Delta Knights where they’re escaping the jail and the premonition sound effect starts. With perfect timing, Tom breaks into the intro to Sledgehammer (Ba-da-da-dum ba-da) and Mike and Crow come in on bass. That more than anything sold me on the Sci-Fi seasons, and I still can’t watch it without chuckling.
