Yowza! Now that’s a set! Village Of The Giants and Rocket Attack USA? Amazing, just amazing. Forgive me if I’m a little gunshy with the shipping direct from Shout though. Never did get a reply from their customer service when the last set w/bonus disc was sluggish in getting out their doors. Great product but not so great customer contact.

Rocket Attack USA knocks down one of my personal favorites so that is cool. In the meantime Shout! is so amazing I see Universal’s Deadly Mantis on the list and don’t raise an eyebrow. Just look how much our perception has changed in the last year.

  15. Great set!

The Slime People: Yes, Susan Hart is in this one, but she has nothing to do with the rights for the film. Not surprised that there is no interview with her.

Rocket Attack USA: Another great episode with more of Albert Glasser’s frenetic music. Too bad there is no interview with William Schallert (he played one of the newscasters).

Village of the Giants: Glad to see there will be an interview with Joy Harmon, but saddened that Ron Howard, Tommy Kirk, Rance Howard, Joe Turkel, Beau Bridges, Johnny Crawford and Bert I. Gordon are not included. This is a Columbia/Sony film, so that opens the door for Teenage Crime Wave and 12 To The Moon.

The Deadly Mantis: Another Universal title! It looks like Shout! is working on the first five from season 8. I hope they will get some other Universal titles like Riding with Death, Agent for H.A.R.M., and The Projected Man.

  22. GizmonicTemp says:

Anyone else think the episode selection of the recent sets has lacked OVERALL “oomph”? I was thinking so, so I did some calculations. I looked at the movies in each set, averaged the MSTIE rankings for that set, and put that against the average ranking of the remaining movie pool. Here’s what I found: Sets 16-22 were all BETTER than average (interestingly, the even-numbered sets were MUCH BETTER than average). Set 23 was WAY BELOW average. Set 24 was MUCH BETTER than average. Sets 25-27 have been a LITTLE BELOW average. Semi-raw data:

    Set#, SetAVG, Remaining AVG, Difference
    13, 33, 66, 33
    14, 84, 64, -20
    15, 74, 62, -12
    16, 42, 60, 17
    17, 56, 58, 2
    18, 41, 56, 15
    19, 51, 54, 2
    20, 38, 52, 13
    21, 46, 50, 4
    22, 33, 47, 14
    23, 74, 45, -29
    24, 31, 43, 12
    25, 47, 41, -6
    26, 47, 39, -8
    27, 44, 37, -7

Remember, the lower the ranking, the more MSTIEs like it. A POSITIVE number in the “Difference” column means the set was better than average, a NEGATIVE number means it was below average.

  26. The Bolem says:

Am I the only one who thought Shout! was intentionally not releasing Slime People for fear that it would anger Susan Hart and make the odds of ever getting the rights the movies she owns even lower? That’s what the full Commando Cody disc implied to me anyway, but this set blows THAT theory…

The only pattern I’m seeing now is that both Joel titles were supposedly easy gets that just hadn’t been released yet, while the Mike titles are MGM and Universal. This begs the question of whether Shout’s had to offset the cost of licensing from MGM/Universal, or whether they want to preserve the balance of Joel/Mike at all costs, as releasing every Universal ep as fast as possible would mean a solid year of all-Mike or even all-SciFi box sets. I’d be fine with that, but they do need as much variety as possible.

  27. Droppo says:

Let me reiterate: I adore you, Shout!

Here’s my wish list for future releases. I obviously want all eps released, but, these are all must-buys for me:

    Season Three

    305 – Stranded in Space
    307 – Daddy-O
309 – The Amazing Colossal Man
319 – War of the Colossal Beast

    Season Four

    401 – Space Travelers
    403 – City Limits
405 – Being from Another Planet
416 – Fire Maidens of Outer Space
418 – Attack of the The Eye Creatures

    Season Five

    519 – Outlaw

    Season Six

    614 – San Francisco International
618 – High School Big Shot

    Season Seven

703 – Deathstalker and the Warriors from Hell
704 – The Incredible Melting Man

    Season Eight

    806 – The Undead
    814 – Riding with Death

    Season Nine

  28. Mr. B(ob) says:

Rocket Attack USA is one of my absolute favorites (“Looks like she got the worst of it again”, “How did you get to the phone so fast?”, “I would like to order, please!”). The others are solid episodes. Slime People was one of only two episodes we never could catch on Comedy Channel/Comedy Central and I didn’t see it till the first Conventio-Con after which some kind fellow MSTie sent me a tape of a tape so I’m really looking forward to having a good quality DVD of that one. Deadly Mantis is one of those films that ran endlessly on UHF channels years ago, it’s a B-movie classic. Village Of The Giants is the only film with a few cast members worth noting. The bonus disc of serial episodes sounds great!

  29. So looking at the shorts compilation from Shout:

    The Phantom Creeps
203- JUNGLE GODDESS with short: THE PHANTOM CREEPS PT 1 – Not yet released
205- ROCKET ATTACK USA with short: THE PHANTOM CREEPS PT 2 – Volume 27 (coming Fall ’13)
206- THE RING OF TERROR with short: THE PHANTOM CREEPS PT 3 – Volume 11 (in print)

    Undersea Kingdom:
406- ATTACK OF THE GIANT LEECHES with short: UNDERSEA KINGDOM PT 1 – Volume 6 (out of print)
409- THE INDESTRUCTIBLE MAN with short: UNDERSEA KINGDOM PT 2 – Volume 11 (in print)

    General Hospital:
413- MANHUNT IN SPACE with short: GENERAL HOSPITAL PT 1 – Volume 14 (in print)
415- THE BEATNIKS with short: GENERAL HOSPITAL PT 2 – Volume 17 (in print)
417- CRASH OF THE MOONS with short: GENERAL HOSPITAL PT 3 – Volume 18 (in print)

So really, if you collect every volume, then the Shout! exclusive isn’t that tempting. Only “never before released” bit is the short before JUNGLE GODDESS.

Especially excited about The Slime People. The DAP’s version is not exactly pristine, and I’m guessing the print the Brains’ used wasn’t exactly THX-certified in the first place. It’s like watching with my glasses fogged up.

@ The Bolem #26: I’m almost certain that they have to balance out the more expensive licenses with with cheap and/or public domain flicks, otherwise the MSRP of the boxsets would fluctuate wildly. I’ve no doubt that Shout try to provide a good mix of episode vintages (as well as movie genres) in each set, but I’d wager that’s a distant second to the cost/profit balancing act. Some people (like me) might love a boxset of, say, the first 9 episodes of season 8 (all expensive Universal films); certain other individuals might hate it; but nobody would want to pay the hefty pricetag.

I’m hoping that #802 – Leech Woman has been overlooked in favor of more popular (i.e. giant bug) episodes, but it does worry me a tad. Is there any way we could get an official answer from Brian? Perhaps via this interweb the kids keep talking about?

  31. GizmonicTemp says:

Barry the Nomad #29 – Good point. Also, I never really latched on to the serials that much. I probably would have been more interested had they presented the serials, well, in a series instead of spread out across several episodes (excepting, of course, “Hired!”). Also, in retrospect, all of the other shorts they did blew the serials out of the water.
One might say the other shorts were “serial killers”.
Anyway, I salute Shout for trying to find a neat little way to add a perk to their set. However, I will pass on this one.
Now, the Mike and Joel miniatures will be a different story!

Awesome! Rocket Attack U.S.A and Slime People were seriously long overdue so it’s good they’re finally getting an official release along with another MGM and Universal episode. Well done, Shout.

Though one episode I did think was going to be on here was It Conquered the World, and while it’s pretty much impossible to get right now, it did have me wondering with the recent riffs Jim posted on mst3k.com….

My VHS copy of Slime People was pretty poor, so needless to say it didn’t transfer very well to DVD. I’m hoping they got a good broadcast original from the vault of BBI (or wherever they get their master copies). Even the original unMSTed version is kind of marginal–“the fog obscures the action…what action.”

Great news from Shout! Keep up the good work.

BTW, folks, just discovered this bit of info on the Daily Grindhouse website: http://dailygrindhouse.com/2013/03/26/john-carpenters-the-fog-bddvd-and-the-incredible-melting-man-bd-get-july-30th-release-date-from-scream-factory/

So Shout Factory’s sister company Scream Factory has the rights to The Incredible Melting Man (ep 704). Might we be seeing the MST3K version sometime this year?

  45. Mike "ex-genius" Kelley says:

So… release date sometime at the end of June/beginning of July?

I’m in no hurry — we’re in the mid 400’s in our watching order and won’t reach 523 for at least six months (only one a week given our otherwise busy watching of Rifftrax and other, non-riffed movies and TV :>). The one interesting thing for me is that by the time we come around to the beginning we may well have nearly every single episode in as good a quality as it will ever be (but we won’t get around to the start again until, um, 2017? I would project that Shout will run out of releasable episodes well before that)

Another set I am very happy with. I love both Deadly Mantis and Village of

Extras sound good as always. Mary Jo has to be doing the intro for Deadly Mantis
which should be a fun one.

Hoping to see The Leech Woman on the next set, among other episodes.

Nifty! My copy of “Slime People” is sooo bloody dark, maybe this will help me see the monsters? I bet that would improve the overall humor of watching the thing. I love all the choices.

So, I have “Amazing Colossal Man” on VHS that Rhino released. But it was never released on DVD? Why should that be? What kind of sin could the owner of an aging VCR commit in a single lifetime to bring this upon herself?
