Holy flaming cow! How did they manage to get the rights to this? And when can we expect them to riff on some episodes of the actual show?

RIFFTRAX MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT: WE HAVE A TITLE!

Let’s cut to the chase: we have bad news and we have great news. The bad news? We were unable to secure the rights to Twilight for our live show. (Remember, we have great news in just a paragraph or two, so don’t break out the pitchforks just yet.) We had long talks with the folks at Summit, who turned out to be very nice people and not Volturi-like in the slightest. They understood what we wanted to do and didn’t object to the idea. They just felt that the Twilight series is still very much a going concern for them, i.e. something that’s still going to earn them millions and millions more dollars, and it didn’t make sense to let a few guys crack jokes on top of it – at least not this summer. They’re probably right, dag nabbit, and they did leave the door open for us riffing Twilight in the future.

For our August live show we will be riffing…

    STARSHIP TROOPERS.

Forget Starship Troopers – it’s that stupid not-really-Doctor-Who Doctor Who movie with Peter Cushing!

I think movies like this were better done by the original MST3K guys, who were more geeky. While I like Mike, he’s really not a geek. Kevin was probably in band or something, and Bill probably played football or something.

    Football? Swing choir maybe. :)

  9. The only way I could ever see Bill playing football is in the style of Tommy Wiseau and friends from The Room.

Happy Birthday Peter Cushing! Also I hope ghosts have the internet so you can see this and also a sense of humor so you can enjoy a light and loving flogging and say hi to Dracula for me?

Btw, sorry you showed up as a cartoon in the last star wars movie.

Bill wore a Tom Baker Doctor Who scarf for the RiffTrax Live Christmas Shortstravaganza. That may have been the very same scarf Mike donned as part of his Coatimundi Man costume in Puma Man. Anyway, while we know Trace was the biggest sci-fi fan of the Brains, Kevin and Bill have confessed to delving into the dragon-guarded dungeons of Tolkien, prog rock and Marvel comics, amongst other bastions of geekery. Funny that musical theater Mike is the default “jock” of the group, by dint of simply being tall and handsome in an aw-shucks, cornfed way.

I’m gonna guess that the BBC doesn’t have rights to this and Invasion Earth. They certainly have nothing to do with the UK Blu-Ray set that’s coming out next week (which doesn’t look like it’s coming over here anytime soon, so that may factor into its availability). And as @6 notes, the BBC have been notorious for keeping a close eye (at least now) on the property these last couple of years, certainly since the reboot has led to the show being more popular than ever.

This is really a sweet VOD, though — especially given all the 50th anniversary attention Who has been getting this year. I kind of hate the movie versions so it will be good to see them riffed.

Soon as I found out about this over on Gallifrey Base’s Rifftrax thread I vworped over to download (don’t hit!). Would love the second movie and at least the McGann TV movie – can imagine Bill “fanboying” over the half-human bit. And Eric Roberts to boot! (Don’t ask to see the Master’s sex table!) And would also love regular episodes (if I ever do an iRiff the debut of my favorite Doctor Sylvester McCoy Time & the Rani is high on the list – I’ll defend him till the end of time, but after seeing it I thought “Damn good thing I started with his second season”)

And Starship Troopers is a more than decent substitute, despite hoping it’d be Super Mario Brothers. As they noted in the full Kickstarter message Sony has a lot of potential in their archive. I spent the last few hours looking through a Wikipedia list of Columbia (which they own), and even excluding co-productions and distributions they have some good material.

@12 The fact Cushing did two Who movies (would have been three if the second had gone over) and considered but ultimately turned down the role of the 2nd Doctor (he half-regretted it but said he’d have played it too much like Hartnell whereas Troughton took it in a great new direction) shows he at least didn’t take himself as seriously as his BF/co-star Christopher Lee (though he did do Gremins 2, so there’s that). Love and respect him, and can half-understand why he turned down several attempts by the show to lure him as a guest-star, but still… does make the scene in Hobbit where he dismisses Gandalf’s concerns due to the intel coming from Radaghast (played by my Doctor, Sylvester McCoy) meta-amusing.

@16 I have a love-hate relationship with the movies. They were part of my first exposures to Doctor Who (first ever were 5th Doctor stories Mawdryn Undead and The Five Doctors, but it took 7th Doctor story Remembrance of the Daleks to make me go from “this isn’t bad” to “THIS IS AWESOME!”) and I’ve been up and down on them. No offense to TV Susan but I prefer her movie counterpart being all “Let’s explore!” to the original spraining her ankle and wanting to go back to the TARDIS. Ian’s totally ruined in the movie, turned
from a capable hero in his own right to a prat-falling goon. Barbara becomes little more than a damsel in distress wheras her TV counterpart had a backbone to the point of calling the Doctor out on his foibles. And the Thals are wussies like usual, but at least it doesn’t take a whole episode to convince them to fight.

Still, being a hardcore continuity-obsessed Who fan I couldn’t help but shout “There is no canon in Doctor Who!” when they used the phrase “non-canon” (yes, fans have even figured out how Cushing can “count” – he’s the elderly version of David Tennant’s half-human clone, you know). (geek voice) And they should
have pointed out the multiple contradictions in Dalek history. And no mention of Davros, sniff! (geek voice)

That said I preferred the second movie, but would like them to do it, hopefully with some riffs on Bernard Cribbins returning forty+ years later as a “proper” companion.

Well, I’m a Tom Baker Doctor fan through and through (coming, like many Americans, to the show through the PBS import of it during the early 80’s) and while I certainly enjoy the modern incarnations there are no pre-2005 doctors I like even slightly other than the 4th.

But the movies? They are horrendous, even the TV one (that I thought would get my second wife to enjoy him — took Eccleston to do that). And unlike the show, they seemed to take it far more seriously (I’m one of those that believe you can’t really riff something that doesn’t take itself seriously — riffing almost any of the pre-2005 TV shows would be really, really hard).

In any case, this is a nice present for those of us who follow the crazy little series that could (given the English disdain for shows that last more than 6 episodes, Who has become quite the exception to the rule).

If they do this and “Invasion Earth” it’d almost be like the Rocky Jones episodes of MST — two similar movies about a goofy but lovably fun science fiction concept. Frankly, that would ROCK.

As soon as I saw this was available I was so excited, I got it as soon as I could and started watching right away. The guys do a great job riffing the movie and Bill really does seem to be a real fan of Dr. Who or at least manages to act like he is. I love all the jokes on the Dalek voices. The “English Dick Van Dyke” bit is good, too! I’m ready for the second movie now please . . .

  22. Lethargic pacing. Shallow adaptation of a series known for great storytelling. Banal and repetitive comic relief. Flawed plot made more flawed by the inclusion of a race of pseudo-cross-dressers. Perfect riffing material.

I haven’t picked this one up yet, but I’m going to. I’ve been a Whovian since they ran some of the the Tom Baker episodes (“Robot” to “The Invasion of Time”) on commercial TV, with intros by Howard DaSilva. I like the Cushing movies (and don’t mind the non-canonical material) and I really enjoyed the McGann movie. I lost track of the show during the Tennant era, though. (I got tired of the “lonely, love-lorn, angst-ridden Doctor” routine.)

I’d like to see them riff on the second Cushing movie. Then do an audio Rifftrack for “Vengeance on Varos”.

  24. I don’t do digital, so won’t catch this one. (I’m sure there won’t be a DVD for me to acquire.) Still, nice choice, as it is a fast-paced, fun film, with lots of silly things with which to have fun.

I *love* the Cushing films and love Cushing’s Doctor. I really wish Big Finish had gotten the rights to do some Companion Chronicles with Roberta Tovey or Bernard Cribbins as his *original* companion.

So, for those of you willing to plunk down $$$ for some ones and zeroes, enjoy!

#24 but isn’t a DVD a “digital video disc” and it’s essentially a disc containing “some ones and zeroes”?

Anyrate, it’s my first VOD purchase and I plan on perusing their catalog for more, especially their hokey 80s stuff. Love it.

Oh my God… their riff “Hold…on… little…girl… says…. no… cancel… it” seriously made me lose it. I spent fifteen minutes on the floor laughing and had to force myself to stop. It wasn’t easy.

Kudos to you guys for that one… it’s the funniest line RT has come up with EVER.

Just wanted to say, I LOVE Rifftrax AND Doctor Who, so this was a real gift from you.

Just wanted to point people towards Roy Castle’s Wikipedia and charity pages – Roy Castle plays Ian Chesterton in the movie, and was a British institution until his untimely death from cancer in 1994. While I understand that any of your comments about the Ian character aren’t aimed at Roy Castle himself, I wanted everyone to understand that this was a deliberately very comedic performance, and belies a very talented and appreciated entertainer from my youth. Thanks for reading:
