Send Trace and Frank to London?

As you may remember, because we mentioned it in previous years, the annual Sci-Fi London convention has, as one of its most popular attractions, a MST3K all nighter.

This year, the organizers are hoping to bring Trace and Frank over the pond to attend the event and do a panel. BUT, they (the organizers) are broke. So they are raising dough to fly Trace and Frank over and put them up in London.

If contributing to that is something you feel you would like to do, the page is here.

If someone promises to make a video of their panel, I might just do this.

Shout! could sponsor the trip, and put the video record of the event as an extra for the XXX set.

I would love to donate to this cause, but there is no mention of when this event will occur? The official site is very confusing, and still references last year’s convention, and even then there appears to be to different types of events: a general convention, and a separate film festival which happen on very different dates during the year. It’s hard for me fork over my hard earned money when even the donation site isn’t up-front on important details…..

If you’re not going to be in England for the show there aren’t many perks you can use. But I went ahead and kicked in for the signed CT DVD. I didn’t get to go to any of the shows, so this is probably the closest I’ll get.

Sounds crazy…they’ll raise donations to bring em there and then charge $$$ for Euro fans to see them? I think I’ll save my contribution for a real charity…Pass…

    Hi All.
Louis here from the SCI-FI-LONDON festival.

Thought I would jump in here.

So, first. Yes our website is not clear yet about festival. Dates all confirmed for 24 April to 4 May. Other dates you might see are guest spots we do at other cons.

Next. Date for the on-stage is Fri 25 April and yes we are hoping to record it. It may even appear as a new perk next week!

All this is subject to us hitting the target of course. We can’t bring them without it, and it’s an all or nothing campaign so quicker we hit that the more we can confirm.

Re Shout – they have not responded to is in years, if you are there guys, happy to talk!

Happy to answer any Qs directly, louis@sci-fi-london.com

    Thanks
    Louis.

You know you want me baby!

Hey, if anyone’s interested, I would love to have Bill and Kevin come to my kid’s birthday party this summer! I am starting a Kickstarter campaign with the ultimate goal of getting them to come here, eat cake, and play pin the tail on the donkey with a group of 3-4 year olds.

Obviously this won’t come cheap. So the goal is being set at $75,000. For this price we can provide bus fare, one hot meal a day for them to share, and of course the chance for them to revel in being uncomfortable around families they never met before!

Accommodations at my uncle’s place will be included. Backers will receive prizes ranging from feeling good about themselves to the memory of knowing they gave Bill and Kevin a slice of ice cream cake.

Do the right thing and give as much as you can. My kid could care less, but I definitely care. Please give to this frivolous enterprise from which you’ll gain nothing for your efforts.

    Thank you!

    Hey.
We took the advice of Kenneth Morgan and have a crew lined up to film Trace & Frank in London.

Hope you can help us make this happen.

PS: Frankenheister, if we hit our target we will send you a cake for Kevin and Bill! :-D

Aren’t we being a little harsh here? If the patrons of said con want to donate to get certain guests over to said con what’s the problem? Obviously the interest will be primarily from people who are able to attend said con and I don’t think anybody is under any other delusions on that anyway.
File this under live and let live if you ask me.

I think the timing of this struck me. If that $50,000 Rifflife project hadn’t come first asking for funding (BWAH-AHAHAH!), then let this other one slide. Frankly if the UK MST3K fans want to fund this, then great. If stateside fans want to send funding, more power to them.

It was a poke at the fundraising requests for events that don’t benefit me on a selfish note one way or another. That’s all.

If there was a promise of the event being recorded I would absolutely pay out of pocket to see Bill and Kevin appear at a little kid’s birthday party.

Done! The event will be recorded using artist renderings and blurry Polaroid pictures. Then they will be compiled and put on a DVD playing in an endless loop, set to the more somber tracks from Ken Burns’ The Civil War.

The majority of the $75000 will go to Brian Cox for narrating the whole thing.

And to fund Mr. Cox getting a piece of cake as well.

Yeah, I find all of these kickstarter campaigns to be getting a little out of hand. They range from well known actors who should have plenty of their own money asking for money to fund their next vanity project (looking at you Zach Braff and James Franco) because God-forbid they should risk their own money. And I’ve seen things where people want to make accessories for action figures but they want YOU to give them money so they can buy the 3D printing devices so they can charge you to buy the stuff you gave them the money to make! It’s crazy! I heard a blurb the other day about how over a BILLION dollars has been donated to kickstarter campaigns. That’s a BILLION dollars that people have given to other people so they can profit. Donate money to cancer research? Nah. Ooooh, but I can donate money to get a new Veronica Mars movie (which got $5.7 MILLION in kickstarter donations). Then the movie will make a ton, and will those people who donated through kickstarter get a percentage of the box office for helping to produce it? Nah, don’t think so. Let’s face it, if those people really wanted so badly to make a Veronica Mars movie, then they would have waived their fees and whatnot, but they’re not, so you can pay for it. I don’t mean to slam Veronica Mars, I don’t know anything about it, it’s just a great example.

I guess though as someone said at the end of the day if that’s what people want to spend their money on then so be it. It just seems like maybe there might be a better use for it. But then you see how people collectively throw out millions for the lottery every week, so yeah, our country might have a problem managing it’s finances.

Joel: Sharing the box office with investors is a dang good idea and would be the right and upstanding thing to do. It makes perfect sense.

Tom Servo: Hrmpf. I guess that’s out then.

Crow: Hollywood is an ugly machine.

    Tom Servo: Ugly! Ugly! Ugly!

Crow: Burn it down! Burn the giant HOLLYWOOD sign to cinders!

It would be a great idea! If I could give money to a film knowing that if it does well and actually get my money back and then some I would totally be interested. It would be like investing in the stock market: It has it’s risks but there is potential for gain, as in monetary gain, not some t-shirt that says “thanks!”

  16. Luther Heggs aka Number 6 says:

The only thing worse than the t-shirt gift is a mug.

It would certainly make me more likely to donate if they shared the profit.

Imagine being on the ground floor of some insane blockbuster and sharing the box office.

I would even invest in “stupid” movies that I knew were going to rake it in.

Hollywood would hate all that sharing going on.

Crow: That’s why we have to burn it down!

I’m right there with you and I like the way you’re thinking! This would actually be a brilliant move for Hollywood. I mean, look how much people are willing to give for pretty much nothing in return. If people could invest money knowing they might get their money back and possibly a very small percentage return, like very small, but still a return nonetheless, they would probably get a TON of people giving money. They’d probably end up with more money than they’d know what to do with. And if people go into it knowing that if the movie doesn’t make XYZ amount of dollars, they won’t get anything back, it would be a win win for the movie companies. But like you said, they wouldn’t like having to share, but man would they get a ton of money!

Well, I wrote I’d consider it if they planned to make a video of the appearance. Well, they are, so a deal’s a deal. Barring a massive financial windfall in the next couple of days, I can’t get there. But, I hope this’ll help those who can be there have a good time.

    I’m just a soft touch, I guess.
