Update: New Riffing TV Show from the RiffTrax Guys?

This COULD all be a massive April Fools joke (note the date of the premiere), but take a look at this listing, found on the web site for “TV Guide” (apparently it’s something called a “magazine”). Credit for the find goes to Tony Goggin. Nice work, Tony.

I want to stress that this has NOT been officially confirmed by anybody. Stay tuned…

New info. Again, no confirmation that this is accurate.

Well, I’d say those clips are pretty convincing this program is real! Shoot, it it’s nothing beyond the clips on the NatGeo website, the fact is, Bill, Mike and Tom actually riffed footage! Into what alternate quantum reality have I just phased?!

    Sincerely,

    Bill

There’s a National Geographic TV channel? I believe that, like TV Guide, they also used to be a magazine. I wonder if they have a topless native women show…

    Thanks Kenotic!

All I have to say is “Son of B*TCH!!!” Now, I have to call the cable company and get the next package up so I can watch it.

I wonder if they will put them out on a DVD at some point…

Thanks for the heads up. :)

It looks like a new series, to be honest. The Nat Geo Channel schedule website lists three one-hour episodes to be aired that night. Obviously, we’ll know more once promotion starts in earnest.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like they stream live…

This will be great…I have all the Rifftrax shorts and the animal ones are some of my favorites…It’s even where I learned of the dreaded “Unholy Meat-Wool”.

I only hope I can watch it on the Nat Geo website because Comcast ain’t ever getting me to re-install their over-priced cable again. Otherwise it is back to the old days of tape-trading. Maybe Rifftrax could offer the episodes for download?

I’m suddenly yearning for a collaboration between the Riffers and Ze Frank of “True Facts” fame. (Which is the best riffing on nature footage I’ve ever seen . . .)

Maybe it’s not a new series but rather some specials done specifically for April Fool’s Day? A lot of cable channels have special April Fool’s Day programming, and it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if NatGeo hired RiffTrax to do a few shows. And to be honest, this concept sounds a LOT like those YouTube videos Randall did (you know the “honey badger” video at least) so it would be perfect April Fool’s Day programming.

The Nat Geo website schedule lists three different episode titles over the span of three hours, so I’d bet there’s something like six episodes in total. Maybe.

But we’ll see when Rifftrax starts advertising it.

This is fantastic. Perhaps it’s an extended pilot, but lets hope it catches on for a long run. Everything these guys do is funny and I’ll be watching every episode. Once again I say thank you to Comcast for letting me pay huge bucks for all those HD channels! I will actually be able to see this when it premieres. Best of luck guys. Break a leg or whatever you would say on occasions such as this.

Sounds like Nat’l Geo channel wants to “lighten up” for April Fools Day, with a little comedy thrown in. Still, really cool for the Rifftrax guys, I never thought they’d make it back to TV in any form. If this is just the beginning, I’d love to see them do something with
the Food Network, they seem to know Alton Brown and food riffing could be gold.

I certainly do hope that this is indeed something that Natgeo is doing for April Fool’s. I saw the trailer so obviously some work went into this so it seems like it would be a little too elaborate for just a hoax and they don’t actually show anything. And speaking of which, I’ve seen other sites set up April Fool’s Day prank weeks in advance, which frankly is incredibly stupid, because, ummmm, April Fool’s Day pranks should ONLY be played on April Fool’s Day. It’s like, “Ha Ha! It’s March 14th and we totally got you with our amazing April Fool’s Day prank! Suckers!!!!” I’m not saying that’s the case here, I’m just commenting on some things I’ve seen. I certainly hope this is true though, and it sure seems like it is.

If this got high enough ratings it could become a series (that’s if it’s not gonna be one anyway) the well of riffable material is almost endless with national geographic channel. Basically every paranormal style documentary they have ever done is perfect for riffing. My advise to everyone is talk about this thing, tell your friend, tell your mom, tell anyone you can about it, the more people that watch the higher the ratings. I don’t think it’s a April fools joke, it’s on the national geographic channel website, if it was a prank it would be just on the Rifftrax site.

The only downside if this got picked up as a show would be the slowdown in regular Rifftrax offerings, as the guys wouldn’t have as much time to riff the big Hollywood movies.

Hmp. With this and Cosmos, they’re really trying to force me to get NatGeo in some fashion. Got rid of my cable long ago and we had CrimeCast, er QuiteCostly, um, sorry, I mean Comcast, in our area anyway, which means Time Warner now, and I’m not going back to those guys…

And I am NOT watching a science show on Shlox Snooze – It goes against their principles.

This will plant a seed of obsession for a whole new generation of kids who will research those people who did the funny National Geographic voice over shows – which will lead the children to the world of MST3K.

It’s kind of like marketing cigarettes to a future generation by using ads featuring a cool cartoon character.

Except MST3K doesn’t kill you. It’s much more forgiving and life affirming.

But once you’re HOOKED… look out. It’s one big brass monkey on your back.

The quoted Riffs in that blurb-article seem like pretty compelling evidence that this is legit?! I’m pumped the guys will be back on the boob tube, but kind of bummed that it’s a one-off special, and not a regular, weekly show.

According to the cable guide on Verizon Fios there are three episodes starting at 8 pm on April 1. One episode is called “Demon Bat”, so it looks like they found some good material deserving of the Rifftrax treatment.

Reading the increasing media mentions (it just popped up as part of FB’s ‘trending’ list) is amusing because the writer over at Zap2It seems to think that the MST3k characters are coming back.

@47 – Yeah, the misinformation about this across the web is astounding. A lot of reports are headlining with “MST3K is coming back!!!”, which, sadly, just isn’t true, & it’s spread like wildfire across Facebook & Twitter (so much so that it’s the top trending topic on FB as I type this). It’s just Rifftrax on TV, which is still cool, but not nearly as amazing as the return of the bots & the iconic silhouettes.
