EW’s Latest List: Best Cult TV Shows (MST3K is #4)

Entertainment Weekly seems to crank out these clickbait lists a few times a year, but, hey, it’s great to see they know that MSTies are still out there.

Methinks EW is stretching the definition of “Cult Show” to it’s absolute limits with this list. “Lost” was a cult show? I think not.

    “SyFy”

Really? That name change didn’t come about until way later.

@Snowdog yeah, I also noticed most have been made within the past decade…

You have to keep in kind that the collective memory of the editorial board of EW only goes back about three years, and on occasion ten. Before that, they figure nothing existed.

Still, I agree it’s good that they remember MST3K.

Not only are many of the shows too new, but they’re too mainstream as well. Half the world was talking about the latest episode of Lost around the water coolers. Star Trek:TNG spawned several blockbuster movies. Etc…

Nice to see I’m not the only one who remembers Freaks & Geeks pseudo-sequel Undeclared. (Speaking of Freaks & Geeks, leaving it out makes the whole list illegitimate.)

No Red Dwarf. No Comic Strip Presents. No Red Green Show. No Space Ghost Coast to Coast (or Sea Lab 2021 or Aqua Teen Hunger Force).

MST3K is moving up the chain! #4? Nice.

Yeah, I don’t get “ST:TNG” being a cult show. Don’t high ratings (out-of-the-box and then sustained over several years) automatically disqualify a show from “cult” status?

I think a lot of this is “Sci Fi Ghetto” in action. “Sci-Fi” isn’t generally perceived to be something general audiences like. So, even if you have something popular on your hands like “Star Trek”, it’s usually dismissed by most people as, “Well, it’s only popular with sci-fi fans, and there’s not many of those”.

Isn’t “cult” an invention of the mainstream? (Or perhaps it’s just self-congratulatory.) Call MST3K whatever you want; it was simply a great bloody show.
