Weekend Discussion Thread: Memorable Hats

Alert reader Sue suggests:

I remember when Easter was a time for, among other things, breaking out new hats in order to be fashionable. Yes, I’m old. No, I don’t want to say how old. At any rate, how about “Best/Worst Hat or other Fashion Accessory in a MSTed Movie”?

But in an MST3K, my favorite hat and hat riff are from “The Deadly Bees,” during the inquest: “Objection! Stupid hat!”

Me, I gotta go with the hat Mary Beth Hughes wears when singing in “I Accuse My Parents.” “Now she’s wearing a table centerpiece on her head!”

What’s your pick?

The most memorable hat I can think of is the Newton’s cradle Mike adorned when the guys were coming up with hats that could cheer up Jan in the Pan, mostly because a clip of that plays at the beginning of some 36 episodes.

That broccoli rubber band of Crenshaw’s in BC2:TLC has to be a serious contender for “most pointless headgear”.

“objection, stupid hat!” One of my favorite riffs of all time :)
We never got to see TV’s Frank’s hat when we he was getting ready for his hat party…but he claimed it was the grandest of all!

I like how in the middle of the “Winter Sports Cavalcade” segment in It Conquered the World, Crow comes in wearing a cap that covers the the whole top of his face, it made me laugh a lot for some reason.

I’m thinking about the foam cowboy hats in the segment for “Cowboy Mike’s Original RedHot Ricochet BBQ Sauce”. “Is it bold?” “Hell, yes, it’s BOLD!”

Then there is the Martian helmets on Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. Or Beth’s helmet of hair in The Skydivers. “I predict in the climactic scene she jumps without a chute and her hair opens up.”

Lots of good suggestions already. I’ll go with the slacks the Mutant was wearing in This Island Earth.

In ‘Red Zone Cuba,’ I like the matching fedora’s worn by the cast of ‘How to Succeed in Business’ – particularly how they contrast with Kelly’s old-time sherriff hat.

Whatever that thing Jack Palance had on his melon in Gor, good Lord. In fact that movie had plenty of other very bizarre lids.

I will vote for the cowboy hats from C.M.R.R.B.S. Hell yes it’s bold you little priss ant. It’s so bold it’s not fit for human consumption.

  18. Oh, jeez, I’m sure there’s a bunch but, as usual, I can’t remember them all, so I’ll just try and pull a few off the top of my head…

Rommel’s funky mod hat in Sidehackers. That’s one wicked-assed lid, man.
Jack Palance’s hats in Outlaw Of Gor.
The Evil Warlord’s helmet in Cavé Dwellers. And we all know how valuable is… his esteem.
Kitty’s hats in I Accuse My Parents. The reasons why these days we laugh at women’s hats from the ’40s and ’50s.
Jane’s weird-assed skullcap in Pumaman. What is that, a WWI fighter pilot’s helmet? An astronaut’s comm cap?
Mistress Volaria’s silly feather-looking thing in Robot Holocaust.
The evil warriors’ helmets with the stupid little bat wings on them in Deathstalker. “Squeak, squeak!”

    1) Jack Palance’s “split top butter top” hat in Outlaw of Gor
    2) Metallunan’s “skull domes” in the MST3K movie (they don’t hide their foreheads very well)
    3) Prince of Space baby sunhat
