More good press…no surprise there…CT is great and the word is getting out.

I would soil my pants if CT was picked up to be a cable show.

As I’m attending the show next Thursday, I’ll keep my eyes peeled for any press mentions it gets around here.

From the article: “It feels like I got cheated out of five good years of doing so something I loved.” Seems like every interview he’s a more and more frank about what happened between he and Jim. Both then, and last year right before the decision to do the flash toons. Didn’t Trace say something about being hesitant to work with Jim again in a podcast not too long ago? Maybe someone can clarify.

Anyways, I saw CT Live in Minneapolis in October, they all did a great job and I still can’t believe I got to meet them all. :)

    Hey, Katana:

Look for me and two friends (JR and Harry) at that show! I’m a MSTie since 1996, a Fremd/U of I alum since 1984/1988-89. Sorry but our affiliations someimes define us. I’ll be the short guy in the Mercyful Fate t-shirt. Heck, the only guy in a shirt of that ilk.

@#4 Captain Cab: he does sound kind of bitter about it, doesn’t he? Though I guess it’s fair enough – I would be too in his place!

Joel fell on his sword to save the integrity of the show that he created. That being said, “MST3K: The Movie” in hindsight was a bad idea (no creative freedom or backing from the studio) and to think that they nearly lost a successful show over it. Cripes!

OK, I sent CT: SCCTM to my parents for Christmas (they thought it was a joke) but I don’t think I can convince them to drive 90 miles to Chicago for a live show. But at least CT is getting more press.

@ #6, Doctorb: If he is bitter, I wouldn’t blame him at all. But in any case, he can take comfort that the show is his legacy and we’ll always be grateful for all the laughs.

He’s not exactly very charitable to Mike, Kevin, and Bill in this article. There’s something a teeny bit passive aggressive in his “I thought of this (Rifftrax) earlier” and “I would have done it differently” blasts in this interview. I know that you guys worship Joel and all that, but these rather subtle shots at Mike et. al come off as rather petty. It’s been 15 years since he left, after all.

Pete, I definitely detected a little passive aggressive vibe there too, but I can’t blame the man too much. “A Dream Deferred” by Langston Hughes comes to mind…an experience such as what Joel had can build up over the years. He really expresses a lot of regret here, missing 5 more years of a truly great and once-in-a-lifetime experience. I can see how some resentment would build up.

If I were him back at the time, I think I would have taken the whole show down with me. It was his idea, he actualized it into something beloved by many that has brought countless laughs, and we should be grateful he did what he felt he had to in order to preserve it, even at the cost of his own participation. Maybe it could have been worked out, maybe he didn’t try hard enough to stand up for himself, maybe Jim was too difficult, maybe whatever. The past is the past. Move on. Rifftrax is cool, Cinematic Titanic is cool, we should be glad to have them back in whatever incarnation they choose! Joel may come off as a little petty here, but even if he is bitter I’m willing to forgive him (not that he needs to answer to me or anybody else here anyway), forgive everybody (once again, not that its my or any other fan’s place to judge what went on behind the scenes), and just enjoy what the cast and crew are creating today.

I am capable of enjoying both CT and rifftrax, but after 15 years, the apparent level of Joel’s bitterness is pretty hard to justify. He certainly isn’t this publicly bitter about the TV Wheel.

He doesn’t seem all that bitter, just “matter-of-fact” about the whole thing.
As if he had gotten over it awhile ago but has had to repeat the same story about WHY he left and about Rifftrax over and over to the point where its starting to get annoying. At least I’d get annoyed.

I found this much more interesting:

We actually did a test when were thinking of doing “Mystery Science Theater” again where we did five to eight minutes of a movie with Tom Servo, Crow and Joel.

I’m glad he’s finally telling this story. He’s been pretty damned quiet about the whole thing for so long. Bitter? He should be, but he doesn’t seem that way. Just sad, and yeah, I get that.

If it were me, I’m certain I couldn’t have shown so much restraint or grace, watching everyone but me ride in the awesome go-kart I designed, and then seeing them knock it off once they rode it into the ground. I’d have been tossing sticks in the spokes a long time ago, but then I’m a vindictive little creature.

There will always be a little bitterness between jim and joel. That’s just how it’s gonna be. I have alway felt that the specialness created by joel flowed into the later seasons of the show. Like some how everything had just a bit of his influence. I like the entire run of the show. Joel/Mike episodes they were all different but they were all appreciated.

Are they doing Legacy of Blood in Chicago? I have become completely obsessed with this riff and would seriously consider flying to Chicago to see it live. Any of them would be awesome, but LoB is truly special.

Turner Classic Movies should grab CT for their channel. It would make a perfect fit for a Saturday night.
