MST3K Reference in Futurama Movie

Fans of “Futurama” know that a new direct-to-DVD movie came out this week. Fans of MST3K may not have heard that there is an MST3K-related reference right at the beginning of the film:

Torgo

The joke is that the morons at the “Box Network” who canceled them were fired for their stupidity, beaten and then ground up to make this product. The “Executive Powder” has multiple uses and is seen throughout the film.

Thanks to alert reader Trey for the tip and the image.

You can buy “Futurama: Bender’s Big Score” here..

Probly not a reference but sorta related was a funny scene with “Screaming Skulls” as well that cracked me up. Funny movie all around though and everyone should check it out.

Yeah. Somebody on the Futurama staff must be a fan of MST3K, because the show was referenced in another Futurama episode a couple of years ago. Perhaps Matt Groening himself? If so, he’s in good company!

Wouldn’t this be a “Manos” (not MST3K) reference?

  4. Nanner says:

Manos is only the most popular MST3K episode ever. And all of those Torgo-related sketches they did in later episodes? You’re right, how could this possibly be construed as an MST3K reference. We’ve been had!

That’s why I fudged the item. It is not, technicaly, MST3K reference, but it is an MST3K-related reference. :-)

In the extra feature “Everyone Loves Hypnotoad” episode I swear the music played during the cutaways to the house was Torgo’s theme.

Just thought I’d add that the Torgo reference goes on all through out the movie and not just at the beginning. Nice to see that folks still remember.

This sells it! I was planning on getting the new Futurama DVD anyways, but now I probably won’t procrastinate as long.

Given the Crow shadow in the darkened theater in episode 121 of Futurama, (“Raging Bender”), I’m not surprised to hear that at all.

I got my copy of the new Futurama movie last Wednesday and noticed the Torgo reference right away. It was definitely a rewind and freeze frame moment the first time the Torgo product was shown. Me and my family enjoyed the reference and the whole movie quite lot.

In the Futurama commentary on the DVDs (which I have watched dozens of times) David X. Cohen and others have all mentioned they are MST3K fans (there are direct references scattered throughout the series).

Somebody mentioned the Crow shadow in ep. “Raging Bender” from Season 2. I have been looking for a cap of this but haven’t had any luck. Does anybody have a screen of that scene?

If so, please e-mail it to Shinyhubcaps@yahoo.com (just please, no scamming like in the movie!)
