Lord Richard Attenborough, RIPI didn’t think this one was in our ballpark, but then I remembered…
LONDON–Lord Richard Attenborough, the respected British actor and Academy Award-winning director of “Gandhi,” the multiple-Oscar-winning best picture of 1982, has died. He was 90. Man, I wish I was classy enough to dress like that.
I remember that I saw Jurassic Park when it got released. That was the first time that I had ever heard of Richard Attenborough. About a month later I saw Chaplin and noticed that he directed it (and this was a REAL surprise, because I shouldn’t have to tell you that Chaplin is a very different kind of movie from Jurassic Park).
Over the following years I saw Attenborough in The Great Escape, The Magic Christian and 10 Rillington Place. His most famous directorial effort remains Gandhi, but his best ones are probably Oh! What a Lovely War and Cry Freedom (Magic is also a neat one, primarily due to a certain scene with Ann-Margret).
Anyway, Sir Richard Samuel Attenborough was a great actor, great director…all-around great person.
Wow, I could only hope to have a picture in my obituary listing that looked half that classy.
Excellent actor, The Great Escape and Jurassic Park will always be my favorite Attenborough films.
And I really need to watch Soultaker again and catch that skit.
Which host segment is this? I don’t remember it and looking at the episode guide it isn’t obvious which one to look at first.
He was -AMAZING- in The Great Escape, a fine performance there.
When I was younger, I just used to know him as the older gentleman who ran Jurassic Park.
Later, I found out that he had been acting, directing and producing for years.
RIP, Sir.
You will be missed.
In Jurassic Park, John Hammond (Attenborough) is trying to convince Jeff Goldblum’s character that the park is worthwhile.
Hammond: After all, when they opened Disneyland, nothing worked!
Goldblum: Yeah, but John? When The Pirates of the Caribbean break down, the pirates don’t eat the tourists.

I remember seeing The Great Escape who is this intense Britisher? In my memory he didn’t arrive, he exploded onto the scene.
I thoroughly recommend the original The Flight of the Phoenix. Directed by Robert Aldrich, watch what may be the best performances by every actor in this single film, and that includes Richard Attenborough, Jimmy Stewart, Ernest Borgnine, Peter Finch, and little known Hardy Kruger playing an intense German organizing a way home, and others. As they are slowly dying in the desert, the desperation played by them jumps out of the screen.
RIP, in you films you made me believe.
What a wonderful and versatile actor. I’m almost sorry to say my greatest memory of him was from Jurassic Park. He was so accomplished in so many other films but they were simply before my time. Rest in Peace Lord Richard.
Attenborough was great in The Flight of the Phoenix (one of my favorite movies,
and alluded to in a Gilligan’s Island movie, believe it or not). But word has it
that German scientist only made toy airplanes! (Hope he didn’t tell that to Jimmy Stewart).

But of course I’ve seen it 20 times. One of my favorites too. And I still remember how I first the first time that revelation was reveal. Just holy smokes!
Got to see him in Jurassic Park. Saw it twice that summer. It’s just a big action film, but a good one.
