Seriously? This annoying animation is going to be at the beginning of every release? Why?
Just remember – there is no “I” in “DinosaurUS”!!!
In terms of how it looks, it’s one of the prettiest VODs they’ve ever done, with the notable exception of Cool as Ice, but that’s probably because the cinematographer here is Stanley Cortez. That’s the guy who shot The Magnificent Ambersons, The Night of the Hunter, and quite a few other big name flicks. Also, if you’re wondering where you’ve seen the director’s name (Irvin S. Yeaworth), he’s the guy who gave us The Blob, so you know this isn’t going to take itself too seriously.
The movie itself actually begins at a brisk pace, getting the premise moving with quite a few characters involved with a workmanlike efficiency. If only that could be said of the second act, where you’ll be rolling your eyes at the “slapstick” involving our caveman and one of the most volume-maladjusted child actors I’ve ever had the displeasure of hearing. This is the one place where you don’t want to see riffers: mock-laughing their way through tacky shtick. It’s a tough segment to get through.
The rest of the film, though, offers some great opportunities, most notably with Dumpy, one of the easiest pickings for the riffers in a long time. Plus, there’s claymation, which is always a positive in my book. Oh, and I’m not going to lie to you; there will be some awkward Eegah flashbacks.
The only thing I remembered about Dinosaurus is that they used one of the brontosaur models in the classic Twilight Zone episode, The Odyssey of Flight 33. And it was ten times more believable on the Twilight Zone than in the movie it was made for! I’m looking forward to this one.
Dollaroid: I’d call it an awkward lapse of self-awareness. Why can’t they see how dismal it is?
The intro needs to go! Way wayyy too long of an intro, over a minute long.
I actually really like the new intro! I notice something new each time I watch it. Maybe I won’t think that by the 100th time I have seen it though. If you think about the VODs like an episode of MST, those all have an intro song…
Two things:
1. I really like the animated intro myself, although I concede that an abridged version might work better.
B. There is a precedent for over-long intro songs and movie riffing.
Also, you had me at stop-motion dinosauruses.
Yeah, the intro’s already gotten old. I don’t mind it so much on the movies, but adding it to the beginning of shorts is a bit silly.
I like the intro. Makes me feel like I’m watching a series again.
A surprisingly good print of this film. As mentioned already, it certainly *looks* good. It just feels like Johnny Quest landed on Gilligans Island. And yeah, there was definitely an Eegah! vibe going on in the cave.
Is there no way to skip or fast forward past the intro? Put that minute to good use then! Grab a soda, or use the bathroom! Interact with family and pets before the movie proper begins. ;)
Seriously, why not just click ahead a minute and skip the intro? People just like to complain, I guess.
@Hotchka! – Funny you should mention Gilligan’s Island, I believe it’s the T-Rex in this film that had a cameo at the end of the GI episode where Gilligan dreams the castaways are cavemen and cavewomen.
As a fan of stop-motion animation and dinosaur/lost world films, I rather like this movie. It’s got a few scenes that appear to have been lifted by other films. The T-Rex attacking the bus is reminiscent of a scene in a much more famous dinosaur film, and the ending bears some resemblance to a famous monster movie sequel. But it will be fun to see them riff it.
