Weekend Discussion Thread: Stingers for Episodes 101 & 102

Alert regular Sitting Duck points out:

Let’s talk about the absence of stingers in the early episodes. Now I know we’ve technically already done this topic, but I think it’s worth revisiting for two reasons. The last time was way back in 2008. Since then, Shout has gotten the rest of the first season out on DVD, making it accessible to those who didn’t get into tape trading.

SD wanted to do a discussion each week as we do the rest of the season, but that would get dull. Starting with next week’s episode, I am going incorporate the question into each episode guide from this point forward. But we’ve already done two eps in season one, so let’s focus on them.

The original thread is here, by the way.

My picks:
101- On the train, Miss Pilgrim lands in Forest Tucker’s lap.
102- A snippet of the silly Aztec ceremony and the singing lady.

What are your picks?

Also, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE keep sending thread ideas!

  1. Sitting Duck says:

101: Truscott gets yanked up by the titular creature when he peeks out of the observatory.

102: Tough one. Either Flora saying, “No Edward, don’t do it!” or the cemetary groundskeeper running off after the Robot sets him aflame.

In retrospect, you’re right that doing it the way I suggested was a bad idea.

Haven’t watched either in a while, so it would probably be better to refresh my memory, but…
101: “His head! It was torn off!”
102: Maybe the “fight” between our title characters? (Basically, the Aztec Mummy tearing the Robot apart in about three seconds.)

  3. Goshzilla says:

How about Forrest Tucker’s great exasperated face as he’s trying to get everybody to safety and that stupid little girl drops her damn ball? Can’t you Euro idiots see I’m trying to help you?!

As for Robot Vs Aztec Mummy, there is literally nothing that stands out in my memory of that movie. Doesn’t the mad scientist dress up like a lucha villain at some point, or did I just nod off again?

    Hey Sampo and/or Erhardt:

Is there maybe a way that in the episode guide entries newer comments could show up at the top, above the ones from four years prior? I know that may be too much to ask; just a suggestion. (As always, thanks for all that you’ve done for the community.)

@3 – No, that was his assistant, constantly trying to cover up his bad Oxy condition with a cape.
I seem to have standout memories of a RvtAM stinger of the mad scientist crazy-laughing in his uniquely goofy way, but maybe memory is blurring with early Comedy Channel promos.

I haven’t seen either of these for a while but here goes:

101-Dewhurst poking his head out of the cabin and yelling BREEEETTTT.

102-The wife (can’t remember her name)walking around in a trance.

  6. Terry the Sensitive Knight says:

I don’t recall the S1 episodes too well, but here’s my pick for the stinger-less S8 episodes:

805: The Thing That Couldn’t Die
“A TRAYSURE CHEST!” -or- “I HOPE A TREE FALLS ON YOU!” then the tree falls on her.
    806: The Undead
    “STAY!”
807: Terror From The Year 5000
Jimmy Carter has Disco Fever -or- “Accusin’ me of peekin’ at Miss Claire, a man my age!”
    808: She-Creature
“That sounds like King’s bark…” -or- She gets up to faint

    Hmmm…

For “Crawling Eye”, I guess the obvious choice is the shot of the Crawling Eye itself through the open door. The shot they used for the show’s opening titles.

For “Robot vs. the Aztec Mummy”, I’d go with either the shot of the caped mad scientist spreading said cape and shouting about his “human robot”, or the shot a few minutes later of him laughing maniacally when the robot activates.

  9. some 23 year old jerk says:

Towards the end of 101 when they’re trying to fend of the Crawling Eye, it grabs one of the guys and there’s a very brief close up of the man wrapped up in a tentacle that’s clearly a very crude miniature model of the actor. It’s short but there are other episodes with second-long stingers (eg. I just watched The Atomic Brain last night).

From 102, how about the pathetic Robot being activated as it cuts back and forth between it and Dr. Krupp? Or what about the mummy’s continuous howling during the brawl?

    Interesting concept….Hmm…..

CE: I thought of a couple (I liked sitting duck and 23-year-old jerk’s scene)…The lady’s (I think her name was Anne) extreme closeup when showing her psychic ability…the guy at the bar’s attempted self-immolation while lighting a cigarette (or his vain Tom Cruise in Cocktail alcohol pour.)

Rv.TAM: Nipple tweak, nipple tweak, fly fly fly (from the short)The Aztec Mummy’s lethal..shoving (the one guy’s reaction when he was being burned by acid.)One of the Aztec’s priests dull surprise-like trance. The groundskeeper’s recollection of him being knocked out (“something pretty doggone curious did happen.”)

    For 101:

“Didn’t you see?” What are you talking about?!” “His head…. it was torn off!”

    102:

    Growling from the mummy.

    Here’s my list of stingers:

Crawling Eye: “His head–it was…torn off!”

Aztec Mummy: (shot of ‘human robot’ coming to life, then Dr. Krupp getting overexcited about it)

Mad Monster: (transition shot of Petro turning into a monster while riding in the car with the next victim)

Corpse Vanishes: Angelo Rossito arguing with his dumb, bigger brother about bothering the girl

Crawling Hand: “Paul, what does it mean I’m ‘stacked’, and you’re ‘not with it’?”

Robot Monster: “I think you’re a big bully, picking on people smaller than you.” “…Now, I will kill you.”

Slime People: Pretty much anything involving the crazy old goat-loving man. Can’t think of anything specific.

Project Moonbase: Briteis and company going ballistic.

Robot Holocaust: I know most would go with Avocado Man, but I chose the moment where Klyton spazzes out after shutting down the electrified gate

Moon Zero Two: Excerpt from the reduced-gravity bar fight

Untamed Youth: Excerpt from Eddie Cochran’s “Cotton Picker” song

Black Scorpion: Little Juanito appearing in the lift cage holding the caged birds

    Prehistoric Planet: “Hi-keeba!”

Haven’t seen Rocketship X-M in a while, so I’m lost for a stinger on that one.

Sidehackers: “I’d do anything for you, J.C.” “I know….I know” (J.C. punches Gooch)

Jungle Goddess: “What I’d give for a hamburger sammich and some French-fried potatoes!”

Catalina Caper: Goofy detective guy gets slapped after snagging a girl’s bikini top

Crawling Eye: I think the line is ‘I say, it’s foggy’ that always cracks me up. Or when the mountain climbers get all liquored up before a climb.

For 101—When Merritt Stone catches the clairvoyant as she faints.

An idea for future weekenders—Worst/best cases of bad shooting (by baddies)
and/or good shooting by goodies, and how to you ight direct better scenarios.
There are lots of examples, one is the riculously inept guards in Warrior of
the Lost World, and the incredibly accurate shooting by Jimmy Carter and the
    Paper Chase Guy.

  15. Leave Crow T. Robert Denby Alone says:

Crawling Eye: A shot of the monster holding the stiff doll of the character outside.

Aztec Mummy: (Long pause) “You can see it standing there!”

Commando Cody might have gotten a nod here and there too: “They’re the ones who’ve been causing us all the trouble.”
