Weekend Discussion Thread: MSTed Movies as Cartoons

Alert regular “Sitting Duck” suggests:

Recently I read this news piece about how CW had discontinued what was the last Saturday morning cartoon programming block. Seeing as how so many Saturday morning cartoons were adapted from movies and live action shows, let’s mourn the tradition’s passing by discussing what MST3K movies could be reimagined as Saturday morning cartoons. I’ll start by suggesting Master Ninja, which would probably be a lot like the cartoon version of The A-Team.

I have to go with The Pumaman. The flying scenes might seem more believable than the movie. I can see myself sitting in my parents’ living room eating a bowl of Froot Loops while everybody else is asleep and watching that.

    Great topic.
I absolutely agree with robniles that Hobgoblins would work as Scooby Doo, but I think the ending of each episode should be them unmasking a hobgoblin to learn that it was actually Old Man McCready all the time. He had just been trying to scare people away from the old studio while he searched for buried treasure (or whatever it was Scooby Doo villains were up to).

“And I would have gotten away with it too, if it wasn’t for you meddling kids and Road Rash!”

Copying the movie-to-cartoon formula of “Attack of the Killer Tomatoes”
“Evolution” and the 90’s “Godzilla”, we have “Giant Spider Invasion: The Animated Series”. Evil Dan Kester somehow survived being eaten by the giant spider of the movie and is now out to conquer the small Wisconsin town with the aid his eight-legged minions and beautiful henchgirl Helga. Doctor Langer, Doctor Vance, Dave and lovable Sheriff Jones form a crack spider stomping team, complete with Ghostbuster-like jumpsuits, gadgets and vehicles. It lasts one episode.

  6. Manos. Yeah, that’s right, Manos… complete with the flat, bland character design and stiff, cheap-ass animation typical of Saturday morning cartoons of the late ’60s and early ’70s.

No, really, man. I’m serious. Manos in the style of a flat, stiff, cheap-ass late ’60s Saturday-morning cartoon. That’d be hilarious, especially the scenes with Torgo walking, and the group fight scenes with the Brides Of The Master.

    I’d totally watch that.

I was thinking something like “Star Wolf!”, featuring Ken the “enhanced” soldier and the crew of the Bacchus 3 (was it 3, or just Bacchus?…can’t remember). Anyway, they would have continuing adventures across the galaxy, kind of like “Star Trek” mixed with “Serenity” or “Farscape”.

Y’know, seriously… Fugitive Alien as an anime series? That actually wouldn’t have been half bad.

  8. I double-dog dare Hanna-Barbera to do a classicly cheap, stiffly-animated late 60s-style reboot of Skydivers or Red Zone Cuba.

I keep thinking about this – Skydivers especially. It totally fits the H-B mold. The gang would include Beth the mechanic (who always has an oversized wrench in hand), Joe, the good looking but bland leader of the gang (with a running gag about his weakness for coffee), Artemis (the blonde Amazon Warrior), Hamish (the loveable but idiotic Scotsman), and, of course, their sentient anthropomorphic airplane, Petey.

I hope these cartoons would be sponsored by Wild Rebels cereal.

“Kids, what are you doing in there?”

    “Having a good breakfast, mom!”

Hell, as far as that goes, why not a shabbily-scripted, cheaply-produced animated version of Wild Rebels?

These wouldn’t be the first Saturday morning cartoons to come from cheesy movies. Does anyone remember the cartoon version of Attack of the Killer Tomatoes ? The movie was weird and silly, but the cartoon version was fun and had better story lines. I do wonder if the movie was made to make fun of bad movies.

P.S. Who or what is CW, and are you saying that their is not one single network or channel (other then, of course, kids and cartoon networks and channels) that is doing Saturday morning cartoons? Uuuggggghhhhh!!!!! I suppose the week day morning and afternoon stuff is gone too? No more Disney Afternoon? No more Fox Kids or USA kids? Oy…. :-(

Full name is The CW Television Network, aka the broadcast network permanently stuck in dead last in the ratings. I have no idea about the state of the weekday programming blocks. I do know that the Cartoon Network restarted Toonami a while back, but as a weekly late night programming block instead of weekday afternoons.

Project Moonbase: a new crew joins the forcibly newlywed pair in the increasingly cramped rocket. They discover a whimsical moon creature, um, a bunnyduck, I guess. Hijinks ensue in the vein of ‘Sealab 2021’.

The Brute Man: each week, Hal meets another disabled musician and commits crimes to help them. In the pilot, a theramin player with Bell’s Palsy gets the Creeper’s help fighting a corrupt pet shop owner.

    Flying Saucers Over Oz:
Well, ‘Space Children’ would make sense: A bunch of kids (We’d have to make them multi-ethnic, of course) team up with a giant brain from outer space who gives them special missions to Save The World!Maybe for the cartoon the brain can also give them special powers, karate skills, and color-coordinated outfits.

But if you wanna go avant-garde, how about ‘The Beast of Yucca Flats’?Minimalist animation, no synched dialogue, random scenes, and every now and then Tor Johnson waddles through swinging his cane at people.

So Space Children would be like Captain Planet? You know instead of fighting pollution they fight nuclear war? I like it just so we don’t have Jackie Coogan in short shorts!
