Weekend Discussion Thread: Moments When Joel/Mike & the Bots Laughed/Cracked Up

I’m not sure who sent me this, but I like it:

I had an idea for a discussion topic: favorite time the bots or Joel/Mike cracked each other up for real.

In “Monster a Go Go,” I always laugh so hard when Servo sings that song [o/` These two girls they make quite a pair… o/`] during the circus short and keeps going and Joel laughs and tells him to stop. Mike reacts to more stuff in the theater, so there’s more to choose with him, but the infamous mean old shop keeper from “The Brute Man” cracks everybody up. When you can tell the guys are really laughing, it just makes for a funny environment.

Sometimes Servo makes a comment and then follows up with an aside to Mike, which I always wonder if it’s ad libbed because Mike usually reacts naturally and laughs. There’s a good example in “The Incredible Melting Man” during the end credits when they’re all noting what they’ve learned and after Servo says his, he follows up with an emphasized “I did not know that” to which Mike laughs.

My pick is from the KTMA version of “Gamera vs. Zigra.” The spandex-clad henchwoman appears and Crow goggles at her slinky outfit, which cracks Joel up. Love it.

What’s your pick?

This one was my suggestion. I thought of it while watching “The Brute Man” and “Deathstalker and the Warriors from Hell.” A lot of laughter in those.

My favorite such instance is one of those lil` moments when you get a glimpse of not only the humor between the cast, but the appreciation as well….

Ep # 304; “Gamera vs Barugon”…Host segment #1, ‘The 5000 Piece Fightin` Men-&-Monster Toy Set’…Tom has just completed the most detailed, longest, and feverishly frenetic sales pitch in toy advertising history, and Joel is appreciatively looking down –past Servo– into ‘The Pit’ at the exhaustedly-out-of-breath Kevin, who must have been red-faced and near the point of passing out (Did the man take a breath during all that??) …and Joel has this gentle, supportive smile as he nods and says ‘That`s okay…’

    Ahhh…Fun.

#52 – What a great catch! Never noticed that moment before. Just watched it and I will always enjoy it now.

OT, but this totally highlighted it for me …you know – Kevin Murphy is amazing. He had A+ chemistry with Joel and Trace, Mike and Trace, and Mike and Bill. That’s incredibly rare. Each combination was magic and Kevin was the only one to bridge them all.

I know he’s busy with Rifftax (which I love) – but, it sure would be a treat to see him reunite with Joel and Trace sometime. They are so great together.

There’s a moment in Robot Holocaust. The Pleasure Machine scene with Valaria. She’s doing her sultry walk to said machine, wearing her perforated dress. As she is climbing in there’s a noticable quiet from Joel & TBs. However, you’ll notice Joel looking at Tom. Very muffled/way off mic laughter can then be heard and Crow says “What?”. But not like he couldn’t hear, it was a ‘what’ out of shock from something Tom said.

If anyone has any insight as to what was going on there…

Josh and Trace were making Joel laugh all throughout the KTMA season, but the best, most genuine laugh I’ve seen from the entire series comes at about 56 minutes in the DAP release of K05: Gamera when Joel is alone in the theater.

The guy on screen, speaking about Gamera, says “…and thirdly, he has certain organs that function nearly like a hydro-electric plant.” After a very brief moments pause and the total absurdity of what he’s just heard sinks in, Joel then has a good old thigh slapper of a belly laugh.

The World of Tomorrow short – Kevin’s continuation of the “she-doo-bee…ba-doo-bee.” My faves.

One I’m surprised hasn’t gotten more mentions – Joel and the Bots bursting into laughter upon seeing the polar bear in Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. Especially with Servo’s comments following after: “Oh, you have GOT to be kidding me!” and “You can see the head piece draped over the body…”

Hey, Droppo (#53)… I just re-watched that segment…and TIMED it…. Kevin rants for over a minute and a half and his verbal dexterity is STILL phenomenal ! …. As he finishes, Joel looks down into The Pit (or, PITT, if you`re a ‘Buckaroo Banzai’ fan ) and Joel is (as admittedly, I imagine him to be) looking at a man who has recited one of THE MOST convoluted, rapid-fire ‘nonsense’ speeches ever crafted…and not missed a beat !

Mayhap it`s because I grew up in the 60`s, when toys were shoved into kids` minds with dynamic fervor on tv … maybe I just appreciate Kevin Murphy`s gift-of-gab-linked -to-keen mind…but this segment really grabs me !

Hell, I would buy that toy set RIGHT NOW….

Even IF ….”some parts may be made of chicken”.

My favorite: “Riding With Death” when Buffalo begins rejoicing at how easily he (actually invisible Ben Murphy) manhandled “Marjoe Gortner” and his big friend in the bar. As Buffalo rares up and begins worshiping his two fists of iron, Crow has him oafishly shouting, “Whoaa! Hoo! Wahoo!”, then unleashing huge, loud flatulence. Servo giggles hard like a little girl, immediately followed by Mike portraying Buffalo oppositely, declaring in a most erudite, dignified way, “Now wine and tapas for everyone!”

I’m of the opinion that some of those are genuine. Look for the montage reel that editor Brad Keeley inserted into the taping of the final episode theater segment (its in your tube), which has a range of some of the most “Wha…?” moments of the series, and listen to them just fall over. And this is for some bits that were almost a decade old.

    As for my memorable ones:
During “Operation Double 007”, there is a shot of the evil old woman wearing a gas mask, which Crow riffs, “Sister Chuck Yeager!”. Joel bursts out a chuckle at that (as do I, every time!)

During “Track of the Moon Beast”, Servo’s doing his Bowie “Fame” rendition, and as it ends, he throws in a quiet “…what’s your name, what’s your name…” that makes Bill stifle a laugh.

During “Night of the Blood Beast”, when the hatchback of the truck opens revealing the body of the astronaut, Crow says, “Well, we had to snap him in half like a frozen dog to get him in here…”, to which Mike starts laughing before Trace even finishes saying it.
