Won’t lie, I’ve missed the blockbuster riffs. Completely understand why they’ve gone primarily with the B-movies, but I’m glad they’ll still put out one of these occasionally

I did not hate this movie when it came out last summer (Although I do prefer the 1990’s version better).

Travis, totally agree! I’m glad there’s a new MP3/”blockbuster” riff. Here’s hoping there’s a few more on the way.

    #2 – It…actually doesn’t suck. :)
Despite our conditioned reflex to cringe at any mention of M*ch**l B*y, you can’t just simply lump this in as “Green Transformers”, since the main difference between franchises is that the Turtles basically ARE supposed to be goofy and jokey, whereas Optimus Prime is not.
Granted, the ’90 movie had a more mythological NY-sewer look and did a better job of not making it look like Sony’s Spiderman reboots, but a lot of the dogpiling on Bay’s movie seems to be on autopilot. (Oh, and he didn’t direct it, btw.)

…IOW, business as usual at RT.

    #4 —Why you hatin’, bro?

Everytime something gets posted to this site about Rifftrax you post some negative dig about their business. And BTW, no one on this site anywhere compared the new turtles movie to Transformers…that was you…in your post. Then you proceded to argue your point…with youself. They choose the turtles movie because it won their poll of worst movie of the year. As voted on, by actual fans of Rifftrax.

In short, if you hate RT so much, why spend time posting about it? Life is short. Go find a hobby you actually enjoy. Some of us like what RT is doing.

I agree, the movie was pretty good. I was crazy for the original TMNT when I was a kid. I loved the cartoon and, while I appreciate the comic book origin of the characters, the cartoon is what I grew up with. The first movie holds up well. The second is nice, but will always be disappointing for not having Bebop and Rocksteady. The third, ugh, there wasn’t even a proper villain.

I was also a huge Transformers fan when I was a kid, and still am. The Michael Bay Transformers movies are all kinds of wrong. There’s virtually nothing to appeal to my nostalgia, nor even to my general sense of what’s good in a blockbuster, as someone who grew up watching now classic action movies, like Dirty Harry, Predator, Robocop, the Terminator movies, etc.

The new TMNT movie, on the other hand, made me feel good. All the characterizations of the Turtles I know were in the movie. I especially enjoyed the fact that Donatello was actually an inventor, as opposed to the vague science nerd of the old movies. Splinter was good too, as was April O’Neil. Vernon, though not exactly like his cartoon version, was an interesting character. Obviously, the Shredder could’ve been better and felt a bit tacked-on. The action scenes were well done and it was nice to see the Turtles fighting as they did on the animated series.

Plus, unlike the typical franchise, blockbuster movie these day, TMNT ran under two hours.

Plus, plus, if anyone who hates this movie had an inkling about what happened to the TMNT franchise during the mid-’90s to the year 2000, they’d know that the new movie is far from the worst that’s been done with TMNT.

(C’mon: YOU know why the fans picked it for Worst Film, and everyone ELSE in the room knows why the fans picked it for Worst Film, and we can guess why RT would suddenly jump on it for Worst Movie Of All Time Because We Say So…)

@5–EricJ is the last holdout of the 90’s Edition Wars, and the last person to refuse to accept that Mike replaced Joel. Agreed that it’ls pretty sad to denigrate everything Mike is involved with almost twenty years later but there you have it! That’s EricJ in a nutshell. It is apparently what the (oft overused) word “hater” was meant for.

  10. It’s obvious someone is a tad bit obsessed with headwriter Mike, perhaps so hopelessly in love with the big lug that the idea of Mr. Nelson already being happily married to a lovely woman, as well as being the father of two beautiful children and the launcher of a successful, thriving business, tears endlessly at his lovesick heart. The poor man has a great fire in his soul and Mr. Nelson can never come to warm himself at it, and passers-by see nothing but a wisp of smoke at the top of the chimney and then go on their way. But Monchichi is right, the taste from the fumes is so terrible, so acrid, many of the regulars would naturally rather avoid it if possible.

EricJ, could you please forget about what you can never have and instead try to fix your attention on the good and the beautiful? Pretty please? It could be one of the nicest things you’ve ever done for your fellow MSTies.

It blows my mind how any fan of MST3K could harbor anything but appreciation for Mike Nelson. If there’s a MST3K Mt. Rushmore, his spot is as secure as anyone’s. He was the Head Writer for Seasons 2 through 10, he guest starred in countless Joel episodes and kept the show going for another 5 1/2 seasons after replacing Joel. Since, he has provided hours and hours of content through Rifftrax with Bill and Kevin, keeping movie riffing alive and producing brand new riffing classics such as seals…I mean such as Birdemic, Cool as Ice, The Guy From Harlem and Santa and the Ice Cream Bunny.

I say this as an enormous fan of Joel’s. In fact, I prefer Joel as host although I love them both. But, to deny Mike’s comic genius and contributions to MST3K…to continually throw negativity his way….it’s genuinely sad to see from anyone claiming to be a fan of MST3K.

Cambot J.Nsonthe idea of Mr. Nelson already being happily married to a lovely woman,.

You’re kidding–A comic more high-school misogynistic than Adam Sandler? I’d have thought he’d end up with…I dunno, Drew Barrymore, or somebody.

(Still, some field experience would explain the proliferation of Marge’s-sister-voice jokes, and “This is marriage is a lie, and a drunken hell with the stench of unwashed diapers!” riffs…)

(And yes I apologize for taking the bait of OTHER people’s attempts to drift the discussion off topic–
Particlarly when I had taken the time and trouble to post on the thread to agree that the movie wasn’t all that bad, and didn’t deserve quite the marketably beaten “Nerd movie” money-shtick that RT drives into the ground when the fans want to beat up the Transformers/Bay jokes.
So, getting back to the misogynist jokes, just what riffs did poor whipped bad-comedy-relief Vernon get?) ;)

It’s been awhile since I’ve downloaded a commentary track from Rifftrax, but this could be the one. The movie was not as bad as I thought it was going to be, but that being said, I still thought it was an awful film. I had low expectations for Megan Fox, but unfortunately she fell below them. Her acting was distractingly bad, and she doesn’t have the charisma or charm to be a leading lady in any film, IMO. The casing in general was pretty poor. Why bother paying Whoopi Goldberg if you’re not going to actually use her for anything? Any random person could’ve played April’s boss with how uninteresting the role was. I also didn’t care for Michelangelo going from fun party dude to weird, creepy hip-hop pervert, though the other turtles were fine. And my final complaint: there is pretty much nothing “ninja” about the turtles in the film. Since they’re all basically mini-hulks, they use their size and strength to do most of the damage they do. And then, when they actually need their skills, they’re completely worthless against Shredder.

I can’t help that I’m a bit bitter towards the film. My friends and I had the choice of seeing it or Guardians of the Galaxy in the theater, and they overruled me and chose TMNT. After I finally saw GotG in the theater, I realized I had been cheated. I would’ve much rather have seen GotG twice.

You’d think the (typically) zero ‘up’ votes would also signify how appreciated their comments are in this venue, but that (along with more direct observations above) continue to register not at all.

You could pay your $3.99 and find out, rather than writing a critique about something you haven’t even bothered to listen to? :-)

EricJ, weren’t you telling us that people ask you how you manage to stay so happy? I’m a severe depressive with chronic pain and I usually seem to be in a better mood than you. Sometimes I wonder, “Does this guy even like this show?” Unless you’ve found happiness in grumpiness you might consider getting screened for depression. Seriously. Antidepressants have helped me enormously, and you’re starting to worry me.

Just because someone is a fan of MST3K doesn’t mean they are automatically or bound by law to also be a rifftrax fan too. Can’t believe how many of my fellow MISTEs have thin skins, can’t handle what you dish out ehh? I like both Joel and Mike, and glad to see Mike is having success. However I don’t like some of the directions RT is going. Nor do I agree with all of Mike’s, Joel’s, or the rest of MST3K cast’s opinions, nobody agrees with each other all the time. So if some random internet guy only likes half the stuff you like, who cares? Rifftrax is different from MST3K and I can easily see some MST3K fans not liking Rifftrax or Vice Versa. I have met Rifftrax fans who dislike MST3K for being “too cheesy and old fashioned” in their words.

Eric, has anyone ever explained acting to you? See, acting is like visiting Mr. Roger’s neighborhood of make-believe. Lady Elaine Fairchilde was a character performed by Fred Rogers. There WAS no ornery old crank, just as there WAS no monster. It’s all pretend. JK Simmons is not REALLY a foul-mouthed in-your-face music teacher. John Cleese is not really a short-fused, hen-pecked hotellier.

Mike Nelson is not really trapped in space with odd grim marionettes.

Funnily enough, Nick Offerman IS a master carpenter. Maybe he and Han Solo hang out and smoke dope. Oh wait, Han Solo is a fictional character. Kinda like Mike Nelson of MST3K and Rifftrax.
