Weekend Discussion Thread: MSTed Movie Characters in TV Shows

As several of you have written to tell me, in this week’s episode of the CBS drama “Elementary,” a witness/suspect tried to throw investigators off the trail by giving a description of the killer he claimed to have seen that basically was a description of Torgo in “Manos: The Hands of Fate.” The guy turns out to be a B-movie fan. They actually mentioned the name of the movie and John Reynolds.

So, a thought experiment: What character from a MSTed movie would you insert into TV show?

Me, I like the idea of a special episode of “Breaking Bad” in which an L.A. detective named Mitchell flies into town on the trail of blue meth. Walter leaves a honey-baked ham in his hotel room and he’s no further problem.

What’s your pick?

Keep those discussion thread ideas coming!

I like the idea of Rockford “being digested” at Mitchel’s place. I guess Rockford made the mistake of getting in between Mitchel and the fridge.

Buzz tells his mom about the strange “man” Mr. B Natural who shows up in his room. Mom calls the police, and the cops from “Law & Order: SVU” are put on the case. Benson & Stabler stake out Buzz’s room, then slap the cuffs on Mr. B next time “he” shows up.

Unfortunately for Mr. B, Stabler, as usual, goes ballistic during interrogation and Mr. B ends up in the hospital. Unfortunately for Stabler, Mr. B calls Denny Crane from “Boston Legal” to defend “him”. Crane gets the whole case thrown out, then sues Stabler, the NYPD and New York City for twice for sexual harassment (once because Mr. B is a man, then because Mr. B is a woman). It’s so audacious that Crane wins both times, and Mr. B is awarded millions in damages.

Stabler gets a stern talking-to from Capt. Craigen, but no other charges. Then, in the next episode, he beats up the Master over the whole Debbie thing.

    Too convoluted, maybe?

The cast of Community face down an invasion of authoritative characters from the various educational MST3K shorts, led by Professor E. C. “plenty of lip and tongue action” Beuhler from “Using Your Voice”.

Meanwhile, Scully and Mulder become entangled in a case involving an evil, murderous cult in search of an ancient civilization. Along the way, they’re befriended by an unlikely pair of allies – Troy McGreggor and Zap Rowsdower.

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen most of the Rowsdower family on Cops already.

Perhaps Cline could make a special appearance on SVU.

Or, Captain Kirk becomes entangled in an incredibly long and boring fight with the Neptune Men.

Lots of really fun ideas here, great topic!

@ 55 – Ahh, but have Kirk first team up with Prince of Space, so they could fight the combined forces of the Neptune Men and the chicken men of Krankor… then add the standard Star Trek original series fight scene music cues… perfection!

@ 49 – I have a feeling that the Adam West Batman series from the 60’s would actually fit quite well with the Wild Wild World of Batwoman. Even the part with 50 Rat Finks running around could probably be absorbed pretty well into the show – Batman no doubt has some Rat Fink De-Duplicator Spray stashed in his utility belt somewhere.

@ 42 – Rockford Files crossing over with Mitchell fits almost *too* well, particularly the seasons of the show with organized crime related stories. I picture Jim also staking out the mob guy’s place, but from a distance, discreetly, and showing obvious frustration at the complete lack of subtlety demonstrated by Mitchell, which almost ruins things completely. After dealing with Mitchell, I’m sure going back to dealing with Chapman or Diehl must have been a breath of fresh air!

@ 36 – Actually, I’d think Pumaman’s sidekick, Vadinho, would end up being too awesome to ignore. (At least once people realized he wasn’t some kind of onion.) The poor Pumaman thinks *he’s* the reason they want to keep him around, when really it’s because of Vadinho.

    @ 30 – XD That’s too perfect a fit for X-Files, isn’t it?

Megaweapon makes a guest appearance on Top Gear. His lap time is slow but he still puts James May to shame. The audience still likes him though so he gets generous applause. He reveals that he’s an old friend of The Stig but even Megaweapon doesn’t know The Stig’s real name.

@49 and @56: I had similar thoughts. WWWoBW does mesh quite well with the campy Adam West Batman.

Heck, you could almost squeeze her into the prequel Gotham, since its stylish noir has room for a little campiness. She’d be someone who’d previously tried the vigilante route in this pre-Bats world and semi retired now. One of the girls who used to be her agents continued the fight but gets into big trouble. Gordon and Bullock get called in, eventually finding out it relates to some earlier Batwoman case.

In yet another Doctor Who MST appearance, the Doctor and Clara set the TARDIS for a jaunt to present-day New England, only to be pulled into Time Chasers, where Nick’s Cessna has seriously disturbed the space-time continuum. Of course, the Doctor heals the breach and saves the day. At the end, he destroys the time-travel tech, saying that humans are not yet ready for time travel.

Back on the TARDIS, Clara swats the Doctor for being a hypocrite, since he takes humans traveling out of their own time all the time, so to speak. He counters by saying humans let kids on vehicles all the time but don’t let them drive. It’s human society that is not yet ready. We’re not yet capable of seeing all the ramifications and solving the new problems it creates.

After replying to #55, I started thinking about all the various TV & movie incarnations of Star Trek, and what kind of MSTed movie characters could invade them. The end result turned into a sort of mashup of both characters and plot ideas appropriate to each incarnation of Star Trek, complete with shared story titles.

TOS: This Island Earth. Captain Kirk and crew travel back in time to 1960s Earth (of course) to thwart a covert alien invasion by visitors from the dying planet Metaluna. Renowned for the classic scene where Kirk, Spock, Dr. Meacham and Exeter discuss the importance of striving to make a positive difference in the world, even when everything seems hopeless. Guest starring Rex Reason as Dr. Cal Meacham and Jeff Morrow as Exeter.

TAS: Fire Maidens of Outer Space. Kirk and crew visit a distant alien world, and encounter a civilization calling itself New Atlantis, with humanoid inhabitants who claim to be a colony of the original Atlantis on Earth. Suddenly, the all-male away team (including Kirk, Spock and Dr. McCoy) are captured to be used as breeding stock to help the women perpetuate their colony’s existence, and it’s up to Lieutenant Uhura and Nurse Chapel to save the day. With Nichelle Nichols providing the voice of Hestia, and Majel Barrett voicing Duessa, Ensign Lorelei, and all of the other female characters.

TNG: The Human Duplicators. Long ago, non-humanoid beings from Galaxos created android duplicates of various humanoids, for purposes of infiltration and conquest. Centuries later, Galaxos is now a peaceful ally of the Federation, but an ethical dilemma arises when the surviving android duplicates from that era are suddenly discovered, claiming sentience. Data champions their cause, while Captain Picard has to balance this against the desire of both Starfleet and the Galaxos Host to have the android duplicates deactivated and destroyed. Special guest appearance by Richard Kiel as Kolos.

DS9: Terror From The Year 5000. In the midst of the Dominion War, an unexpected burst of chronoton particles transports a Founder from a potential future back to Deep Space 9, in an attempt to go back and change the past to avoid a catastrophe. After discussions and negotiations fail, Captain Sisko must outwit his opponent from the future, while Odo faces a difficult dilemma. Salome Jens shines in her dual role as both Female Changeling and the visitor from the future.

VOY: Crash Of Moons. As a side-effect of a terrifying battle between the Borg and Species 8472, two Earth-like moons of the gas giant planet Endor (Gypsum and Ofecious) are now on a collision course. Janeway and her crew become involved in trying to help the inhabitants of both moons evacuate to another habitable moon before their mutual destruction. The battle of wills between Janeway and Cleolanta, ruler of Ofecious, is a particular highlight of this episode. Guest starring John Banner as Bavarro and Patsy Parsons as Cleolanta.

ENT: King Dinosaur. In a plot suspiciously similar to the 4th episode of season 1 (“Strange New World”), Archer and crew land on an alien world that looks strangely like Wisconsin, and instead of doing actual scientific studies they stand around in baseball caps taking pictures of themselves. Afterwards, they decide to have a picnic on this new alien world, and they encounter a lemur-like creature they nickname “Joey”. Eventually, an actual threat emerges in the form of hostile dinosaur-like creatures, and because it endangers Porthos (Archer’s pet beagle), Archer nukes the place, with the full approval of Dr. Phlox (“evolutionarily speaking, they would have died out before long anyway”). Special guest appearance by Joey the Lemur (who isn’t actually a lemur).

Star Trek Reboot: Space Mutiny. In a mindless action romp, Baby Kirk and crew become entangled in a mutiny aboard an old Earth colony ship that was launched long before warp drive travel. A charismatic leader named Kalgan has been revived, and he’s determined to take over the Enterprise to lead his followers in conquest of Earth. (It’s almost too easy to picture Chris Pine’s Kirk in Ryder’s role here – riding around on floor cleaning vehicles, screaming for no apparent reason, shouting “move move move!”, etc.) Spock once again showcases his clear-headed Vulcan logic by screaming and yelling and losing control, while John Phillip Law as Kalgan easily out- and over-acts the rest of the cast.

#62: Bravo. *applauds* That is an excellent distillation of all of the versions of Star Trek. I would call the reboot “Abrams Trek” but that’s a minor detail. Castle Forrester kind of reminds me of where Trelane the Squire of Gothos set up his little playpen. Wonder if Pearl ever encountered him and his parents during her intergalatic travels…

@ 68 – Thank you! It was great fun to put together. I have a feeling that Trelane’s antics would meet nothing but irritation from Pearl and Observer, while Bobo would of course find him utterly hilarious. (The parents of the space children in season 8, whom Pearl meets at the end of 812 TISCWSLABMUZ, were undoubtedly inspired by the appearance of Trelane’s parents at the end of “The Squire of Gothos” – there were plenty of Trek fans writing for MST3K!)

@ 70 – Yes, I am a big fan of SF Debris, thank you for the compliment! (Though in that light, my treatment of “Abrams Trek” was too petty and mean-spirited – Enterprise, though, got what it deserved.) I particularly enjoy the parts of Chuck’s reviews where he does the “what if” scenarios, examining how a flawed or failed story *could* have worked (similar to last week’s discussion topic). I believe he also grew up as an MST3K fan, so I like to think it’s a natural extension of that mindset – you make snarky comments about something that didn’t work, in part because you can also see what *could* have been.

After all the carnage of “Gunslinger”, Rose (Beverly Garland) rides out of town. Sometime later, in need of cash, she takes a temporary job: filling in for Marshal Matt Dillon while he’s away testifying at a trial. And, it turns out, she does a very good job keeping the peace in Dodge City.

When he returns, Matt is impressed with Rose’s work. He lets her know about another temp job: filling in for Marshal Bat Masterson while he recovers from an injury. That goes well, too. So, she’s recommended for a job helping out the law in Medicine Bow, where she meets up with the foreman of a nearby ranch, a man known only as the Virginian.

And considering how many westerns were airing around this time, this story goes on and on and on…

There was an episode of Family Guy where Stewie and Brian are dimension hopping. If they’d landed in MST, Stewie would have ended up with the Mads and Brian would have been stuck on the S.O.L. making sardonic observations both about the movie and about the whole MST set up. He’d probably also sneak off with Joel to toke up behind the bulkhead during a commercial break.

Meanwhile Stewie’s escalating malevolence and attempts to take over Deep 13 eventually prompt the Mads to send him and Brian off to their next dimensional hop.
