K. Gordon Murray Movie Trailers

A movie about K. Gordon Murray–who brought MSTies the movies in episodes 102- THE ROBOT VS. THE AZTEC MUMMY, 521- SANTA CLAUS AND 624 – SAMSON VS. THE VAMPIRE WOMEN–is apparently getting closer. It now has a Web site on which there is a very wacky teaser trailer and captivating promo trailer.

  1. With Ross Hagen hosting, yet.

    “Murray, The ceiling needs painting”

Why would make such a movie about a B movie presenter/producer? I can’t see anybody but MSTies going to this film.

Tor, there actually are B-movie fans who don’t like MST3k. Remember Stuart Galbraith IV? He actually likes Francis Coleman and hates CT (and MST3k).

Besides, judging by the previews, this movie will likely have a humorous bent. I like the subtle joke in the rating screens: “The following preview will not be approved…”

I’m not sure if it was cheeky or sad that the promo trailer rips off the Citizen Kane opening and trailer.

Ross Hagen ain’t no Orson Welles.

And personally, I’m little scared of Stinky The Skunk from “Little Red Riding Hood” That looks like another movie that needs a riff treatment, STAT.

Ditto to all that. Intrigues me so.

While his films are a joy for us MST3K fans I think the audiance for the documentary are going to be super slim…

  7. To answer Wilford Wolf’s comments… the promo trailer is supposed to be “cheeky”. To compare K. Gordon Murray & his films to CITIZEN KANE (and Orson Welles) without laughing is impossible! From the beginning… I wished to tackle this project with a lot of humor and nostalgia. The point is not to glorify K. Gordon Murray or his films, but to preserve a wacky time period in film history in which these films were actually unleashed upon unknowing children. It is about drive-in’s and carnies peddling “sex-hygiene” books. It is about “spooks shows” and tacky gimmicks. It is about the age of showman and their inevitable decline.

Oh, and ‘stinky’ IS pretty creepy!

If the guy had an interesting life, I’d pay to see a documentary him. The same goes for Coleman Francis.

  10. Cool! I’m a big fan of the Churobusco/Azteca line. Some of them aren’t even all that bad. Curse of the Crying Woman is on my list of 50 favorite horror films.

    Count me in!

Brainiac is one of my all-time favorite films. (It’s Mexico’s answer to Plan 9!)

And you have the man in the silver mask! What more can you ask for???

Tacky. Maybe if I’m in the area or need a place to hide from a supernova or something … not going to see this movie .

I feel the complete OPPOSITE of Smog Monster. This looks fascinating and i can’t wait to see it (though i highly doubt it will get a NC showing). Cheers to you, Daniel Griffith.

Wait guys, he didn’t direct these movies. Not any that I know of. He was a presenter, a producer…he picked up mostly foreign flicks for distribution–hardly an Orson Welles of b flicks.
There’s not enough on the Wikepedia entry to make this look like real “movie material” but you can make a good film out of pretty much anything.
The name of the guys making this film sounds famliar. I think they have some stuff on youtube. And, if I remember correctly are real amateurs…if I remember correctly.

Oops, sorry checked on that and is not who I’m thinking.

Apologies to Mr. Griffith and company.

  18. Yeah, Murray was the Ballyhoo financier guy. And he was responsible for the atrocious dubbing. Probably should make the movie about Churobusco/Azteca instead but maybe there’s an interesting story behind Murray.

I remember the weird-ass KGM kids movies were summer matinee staples back in the day. Those and Pippi Longstocking.

I actually really want to see this, in spite of how painful Ross Hagen is as a narrator. I’m hoping that maybe it’ll mean there’ll finally be some interrest in cleaning up and releasing some of his lesser know films on DVD (plus I’d really like a decent copy of “Santa Clause”). I guess it’s Ballyhoo’s first production. I say we all write to them to get the Coleman Francis/Anthony Cardoza project going. They could get Hagen to narrate that, too – every once in a while stopping the narration to announce to everyone that he’s Cherokee Jack.

  20. What I mean by “ballyhoo” is a sort of outlandish style of publicity. Like P.T. Barnum and William Castle were famous for. Sorry I didn’t make that clearer. He bought Mexican movies cheap, dubbed them and marketed them in the US, in turn enabling Churobusco/Azteca to produce more movies in Mexico, where they could be produced at a much more reasonable price than in the US.

Or something like that. Most of these movies were seen by American audiences on television through AIP, but some got billed in movie theaters and Drive-ins. If I have any of my facts wrong, this movie should clear them up.

I would really like to see a Doc about Murray…I add this because I unintentionally sounded so negative in my post.

  22. First, to answer Bob(NotThatBob)’s question regarding the documentary building interest in releasing some of Murray’s ‘lesser’ known films. Well, that process has begun. I am currently negotiating with Rene Cardona III (grandson of Rene Cardona SR, director of Santa Claus) and Guillermo Calderón Stell (the films producer) about releasing a special edition DVD of SANTA CLAUS and including both the US dubbed & the uncut Mexican version. This year the film will be celebrating it’s 50th Anniversary, which is why I choose to release the Murray documentary in 2009.

As for Ross Hagen’s narration… you would be very surprised. His narration is over-the-top and hilarious… which is what one would expect regarding the subject of the documentary. A real Ballyhoo artist! Plus, Ross represents years of exploitation/drive-in filmmaking.

Castle Monster… This is my third documentary, but first feature-length production. I recently directed/produced all the bonus features for the SPECIAL EDITION dvd of the 1972 William Grefe’ film, “STANLEY”. This includes an hour-long documentary concerning the making of the film. We will also have the feature-length documentary on William Grefe’s career completed by the fall of this year.

Another project in the works (for the dvd release) is a documentary about the making of “THE NAME OF THE GAME IS KILL”… with Jack Lord and Susan Strasberg.

Needless to say, it will be a busy year.

A Coleman Francis/Anthony Cardoza documentary would be interesting.

  23. Bob(NotthatBob) says:

Thanks, Mr. Griffith – you have no idea how happy the Santa Claus DVD will make me (maybe you could work with Shout Factory too, and put the MSTied version on the special edition. That’d be really amazing).
Anyway, like I said, I can’t wait to see the documentary, and may you have great success.

  24. Here’s a link to the apparently defunct Casanegra Films, which was in the process of releasing all the KGM classics (and doing an exemplary job) before they fell silent: http://www.casanegrafilms.com/index_en.html

Unfortunately, they only managed to release a fraction of the KGM titles before the mysterious halt. Fortunately, The Brainiac and Curse of the Crying Woman were among them.

I also have the Something Weird Video release of Doctor Doom which has as an extra many of the original KGM trailers. SWV was planning to release the KGM line a couple years before Casanegra but that was as far as they got before NAFTA passed and nixed the deal. It’s just as well since the prints SWV use are invariably of very poor quality.

Yeah, I had actually had SWV’s never released DVD of Santa Claus in my Amazon wish list for a while before it disappeared (there was cover art and everything). Sad that CasaNegra went away, though.

I think it’s pretty cool that Ross Hagen is narrating. Does anyone know what he thought of the MST3K treatment of his movies (Sidehackers & Hellcats)? Was he more of a Beverly Garland (pro) or Ray Dennis Steckler (comically negative)?

  28. Edwin B says:

Sounds like an interesting movie. Also, don’t tease me, but I thought Ross Hagen was good in the movies that were misted  I would see a movie about his career, too.
I also agree that a movie about Coleman Francis would be fascinating. (absolutely fah-scinating as they say in ‘Werewolf’) If we didn’t like bad movies we wouldn’t be MST fans, right? A peek at those who made them is right up our alley.
