Yep. If you want to see the movie James Nguyen made before Birdemic…

Good to see the mother from Birdemic making her big screen debut here. This movie is, I think, just slightly better, since it contains no GIF birds and no heavy-handed environmental message. But be ready for lots of scenes shot in beige interiors with fluorescent lighting.

The riffing actually helps this movie. Without it, I would probably have fallen to sleep in the first minute.

This one’s a real gem. There’s all sorts of Birdemicy details that the guys riff on, but the favourite bit for me is the HUGE plot twist dumped on the viewer partway through one of the title characters’ dates, which transforms the genre of the movie entirely.

Patsy van Ettinger. She was literally the only decent actor in Birdemic. (And, apparently not even an actor. She invested in Julie & Jack and Nguyen gave her a part, something like that.) She almost sells the motherly worry in “You need a career to fall back on in case Victoria’s Secret cover model doesn’t pay enough to support yourself.” Contrast her performance with Alan Bagh, who’s not even convincing as a human.

FYI: RiffTrax is offering a discount if you buy Julie & Jack and Birdemic Live together.

We went to the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk CT on Thursday. They have seals. (They’re adorable.) I said “such as seals” a lot.

Isn’t this the one that actually has Tippi Hedren in it? I watched the Phelous/Obscurus Lupa review a while back so I sadly know the twist going in, but I really want to see how the riffers react to it.

It’s scary to realize I now now 3 out of the 4 extant James Nguyen films.

It’s clear a teacher once told James, “Write what you know,” and he took it way too literally. Stock options, computer hardware sales, gross sex-obsessed best bud — it’s all here … again. Obviously, Mr. Nguyen finds this stuff fascinating. Just not fascinating enough to do anything with it.

The first third of the film or so, the guys rely way too much on sarcasm-based quips over & over again, but they start to broaden the range of jokes after that. And of course, there are Birdemic callbacks galore. The riffing is practically a tribute to the later movie.

And as for the guys’ reactions to the “twist,” they don’t joke at all, just react the exact same way you or I do. And that had me laughing so hard I was crying.

Director Nguyen has a cameo in this one! And he speaks pretty much the same way he writes dialogue. At the New York premiere of Birdemic 2 a couple of summers ago, he was better spoken and his love of movies and moviemaking was so damn sincere, you just had to like the guy. (AND I got a pic of Mrs. Gummo with Whitney Moore, Whitney doing her best rock-n-roll devil face!)

Today marks the ninth anniversary of a little thing some people like to call … Rifftrax.

Posted here because the This Day in MSTory entry will disappear forever in a few hours, whereas the Rifftrax folks seem to think it’s kind of a big deal …

If they thought it was a big deal, they would have given out more than a 15% discount.

Back when that other company owned them, they’d often have 40% discounts. Which is when I’d usually buy, since a lot of the riffs aren’t so great. I don’t mind paying $10 if I’ll watch it more than once, but a few I’ve bought I couldn’t even watch it once

Wow. That is an incredibly entitled attitude.

Rifftrax is an independent, online company that has to maintain offices, a website, negotiate and pay for distribution rights for feature films (no easy task right there), pay the writers, performers, office staff etc., and in return delivers 90 minutes of entertainment to your home or mobile device for less than the price of two Big Mac Meals, and you feel that you are owed something more? If you don’t like the product, don’t buy it. Just don’t claim that if they really cared they’d make it cheaper. That’s just ridiculous.

Rifftrax is phenomenal. I love them deeply and I want another nine years.

Grumps, GO ELSEWHERE. Spend your money on other entertainment. Don’t come here and complain about coupons. It’s childish.

I love all things RIFFTRAX, but this is one of my new all time favorites! Absolutely zanny–ranks up there with “Slumber Party Massacre” and, of course, “Birdemic”! You could tell the guys were having fun with this one, and I was right there with ’em! Loved it!!! I give this movie 4 water mammals out of 3… such as seals…

And while we’re on the subject… my biggest problem with RIFFTRAX is why can’t they give me a 99% discounts, man (JUST ME)! In fact, why can’t the RIFFTRAX guys just come to my house and riff on my couch?! Answer me, that, smart guys! I want my binky! I also want a pony, and I want it NOW, Daddy!

Also, HAPPY 9th ANNIVERSARY RIFFTRAX!!! I love you more than my own family! Weeeee!!!

Ahem. As much as Rifftrax deserves lots of love…back to the movie. I think I’ve discovered a theme or subtext or something to James Nguyen films – dirty feet. I’m not happy about it.
