RIP Mike Dodge

We don’t have details, but we have reliable reports that writer-actor Mike Dodge has died. Mike was a staff writer for MST3K for all of season six, and appeared as “Bob the A-Bomb” in a host segment in episode 602- INVASION U.S.A.

Thanks to Tom Noel for the image.

He also was the narrator of “Edward the Less,” an animated “Lord of the Rings” parody Mike, Bill and Kevin created in the years immediately following the end of MST3K. He also provided the voice of bossman Bob Honcho in the “Film Crew” videos.

Cast members sung his praises today.
Mike Nelson:

A wonderful man and tremendous talent. He was hilarious, charming and erudite, and I was fortunate enough to work with him in stand-up comedy, in a radio troupe, later as a writer on Mystery Science Theater, and on our Film Crew DVD releases.
Nothing was better in a writing room situation than making Mike laugh.
A small sample of his outsized and far-ranging talent, he narrated a Lord of the Rings parody I worked on.

Frank Conniff:

He did some writing for MST3K and all of us who worked there loved him and thought he was one of the funniest people we knew. And on top of that, he was just about the nicest person you could ever meet. When I moved away from Minneapolis I lost touch with Mike, but he was an unforgettable person, loved and respected by everyone who knew him. He will be missed.

When we have more information, we’ll update this post.

He couldn’t have been that old, could he?

    RIP Mr. Dodge.

  2. I was almost about to say he’s the first MST3K alumni to pass away, but then i remembered, that would actually be trace’s father who appeared in episode 706.

That’s sad to hear. he couldn’t have been very old. Health-related problems?

Very sad news — but wonderful tributes from Mike Nelson and Frank Conniff.

I’m glad he appeared as “Bob the A-Bomb,” because of course we got to see him. I have an immense respect for all of the contributors to my favourite show of all time, many of whom we will never really know, but who are there for us every time we watch an episode.

    RIP, Mike Dodge.

Damn, I’ll miss him. He was unforgettable as Bob Honcho, the best bad boss you could ever hope for.

It’s sad news. Dodge’s A-Bomb was one of the first Hex Field View Screen guests I’d ever seen and I was surprised he didn’t appear in more sketches. He seemed quite good on-screen.

    :-(
A sad milestone: the first MST3K alum to pass. (Not counting Jack Beaulieu, who was really more of a cameo. And if you count Trace’s dad, technically he was predeceased by Humphrey Murphy, who memorably portrayed the fearsome wolf Bobo brings back to the castle at the end of Wurwilf.)

And he almost made it to Halloween. I think, if I had the choice, I’d like to die on Halloween. In the early evening, in a rocking chair on the front porch. With a bowl of candy in my lap, gripped tightly in rigored hands. Provide the neighborhood kids with some truly lasting holiday memories.

I don’t like anyone associated with the show dying, not one bit. Rest in peace, Mr. Dodge. Ah hell, he was the voice of Bob Honcho. Man, this year just keeps getting worse.

I hope we get to learn more about Mister Dodge from other Brains’ testimonials. There’s very little info about him that I’ve ever found. Possibly a small silver lining for us fans.

    R.I.P.

I’m not nuts enough to call it the best season, but Season 6 will always have a special place in my heart as the first “live” season I watched.

    A Peter Grave!

This joke alone was worth buying the Film Crew set.

Oh no! I really enjoyed his one, brief on-screen bit as The Bomb, and loved him as Bob Honcho on the Film Crew DVDs. I’ve often tried to find out what he’s been up to since then, to no avail. So sad to hear of his passing.

My condolences to his family and friends.

RIP, although I must say the bomb sketch is easily one of my least favorites in the entire series… >_>

The only Film Crew ep I have seen is Hollywood After Dark, but his bit at the beginning is easily one of my favorite parts of that show. In character, as Bob Honcho, he calls in from a hot air balloon with George Clooney and Richard Branson, and he proclaims that they are all (Rhue) McClana-fans It’s so silly and lighthearted and awesome.
