Weekend Discussion Thread: Who Should Sing the Theme Song?

Bob writes:

We all know that Joel and Mike sang the songs in their runs on the show. Since it looks like the show will be brought back it’s possible that Jonah Ray could sing it. If he doesn’t then who could? I don’t know if Joel would, as he’s not the host. My personal pick would be Annie Clark/St. Vincent. It would be a new twist having a female vocalist sing the theme! Yes, Mary Jo did sing a few lines in the Sci-Fi era but Mike did the main vocals. I think Annie would do a great job. Annie also plays guitar so she could even do the famous “TWANG!” note at the end of the song.

My suggestion: Man or Astroman, baby!

I think they should stick with the host singing the song. We don’t need another twist.

Except for today’s audience, they will probably have him sing through an autotuner…

I’m content with the host doing it. But I’d be so delighted if Ron and Russell Mael — Sparks — did it. Hey, they were ready to work with Jacques Tati, and they did a theme song for Modesty Blaise; why not this little show?

Another thought — Kim Milford, star of Laserblast. Actually a decent singer. Oh wait, he’s dead.

    Well, ask anyway.

Are Man or Astroman? still around? Have them back up Jonah.

If not I agree with the post suggestion King Diamond, clearly the obvious choice.

i would consider all the bands/singers that they’ve riffed or mentioned in passing (Styx, Kansas, Kenny rogers, prince etc.) send out invites to do their version of the theme and then if you have any takers or volunteers from various acts, you have a rotation of different themes to play. one week it’s kiss maybe the next idk…sting maybe,

rr called it first! different fan/professional themes every week would be just like, icing on cinnamon buns. (and let -them- then riff on the theme! could image some getting crazy… build up some stock library as you go; re-use bits as new themes come along… just i could picture it being a hilarious group-art-project every epi, a bit like the “star wars uncut” projects…

I’d be more interested to see what they do with the MST End Theme. Maybe they could get Sting in there scatting, “Sending out an S.O.S…”

Given that Felicia Day is all but confirmed as the new mad, I don’t think there’s any question that she will be singing at least part of the theme. The real question is, what will the new lyrics/backstory be?

Since I think Felicia is slightly better at playing manic than mad, I think it would be fun is she played a grad student at Gizmonic University who likes to shoot ex-boyfriends into space (she is a rocket scientist, after all) and approach the role from the standpoint of a slightly psychotic/vengeful ex who occasionally forgets that Jonah is her unwilling prisoner. (Jonah, on the other hand, doesn’t even remember their date, and it’s entirely possible she has him confused with someone else.)
The SOL, could have been picked up cheap from a scrap heap in Minnesota (You try funding a secret space program from your dorm room with just a Pell grant) and they can explain that the bots just “come standard.” At any rate, based on this premise, here’s my my stab at new opening lyrics:

    All:
    In the not-too-distant future,
    Next Thursday A.D.
There was a guy named Jonah,
    from Gizmonic university.

He met a girl, her name was [Day?],
but didn’t know she was a bit insane.
He didn’t call back, after just one date,
So she locked him in a rocket, and shot it into space.
(Felicia: He so totally deserved it)

    Felicia:
    I’ll send him cheesy movies,
    The worst I can rent.
    (la-la-la).
I’ll make him sit and watch them all,
    Then log the experiment.
    (la-la-la).

    Jonah:
Now keep in mind I can’t control,
Where the movies begin or end.
And try to keep my spirits up,
With the help of these robot friends.
(Crow: You’re not my real father!)

    All:
    Robot Roll Call:
    Cambot!
    (Zoom in!)
    Tom Servo! (Oh yeah!)
    Croooow! (I’m different. Again.)

    All:
If you’re wondering how he eats and breathes,
    and other science facts
    (la la la),
Then repeat to yourself, “It’s just a show,
    I should really just relax–
    For Mystery Science Theater 3000!”

Wait. Did I just write MST3K fanfic?

If Josh doesn’t have time to work directly on the show itself maybe he could help with the song? After seeing his pre-show musical routines with Frank during CT he has my vote.
