Joel, regarding Shout!: “The other thing they’ve done is go back in and clear movie rights for us. They’ve cleared over 100 movies for us so they are integral to the new Mystery Science Theater. It’s amazing to know we won’t have any problems with the rights of any films we choose in the future.”

So the Shout! library is where to look. Or am I reading that wrong?

I think you’ve misread what was said. Shout Factory got the rights to released MST3K on home video (DVD). Many of the episodes featured films that were not in the public domain. Initially Best Brains got limited rights to the non-public domain movies to show them on MST3K on TV for X number of times. That meant that when they wanted to release MST on home video, they had to go back to whoever owned the right to those movies & get new contracts signed. Since years had passed since their initial showings, sometimes the owners changed hands, so naturally they’d have to make agreements with a whole slew of people.

When Shout Factory got the rights to release MST3K on DVD, they have been the ones to secure the rights. They’ve done a remarkable job, but we don’t know what those deals were. They could have been for x number of years, or X number of units sold, or whatever.

So it is likely that, now that Shout Factory owns MST lock, stock & barrel, that they will be the ones going out & securing the rights for movies to be used on the new reboot of MST3K. That doesn’t mean that, since Shout Factory released Halloween II on DVD & Bluray that they can use that film on the new MST. Again, Shout likely made a deal with the owners of that film to release it on DVD & Bluray only for a limited period, and NOT to include hybrid showing on things like MST3K.

So, in a nutshell, Shout will go out & secure the rights to have movies on the new MST3K show, and they likely will have in the contracts that they can sell them on DVD, Bluray, Digital downloads, Online Streaming & probably any future technology (like chips in our brains).

What those movies will be is anyone’s guess right now.

So for anyone thinking that a movie released by Shout Factory will be one of the new MST films riffed, think again.

I wonder if Jim was just paid a lump sum for the rights or if he will still get residuals of some kind from the DVDs and/or the reboot episodes?

Most interesting pull quote to me:

“I’m also hiring a writing staff who will be writing the shows along with the new cast. We don’t just hire actors to say the lines.”

this confirms that the actors will also be writers on the show.

Heck, we still don’t know if he’s voicing Gypsy or not, or if Gypsy will even be on the new series!

Joel did answer a question I had been wondering. Was Joel going to be the head writer, or someone else. Looks like someone else will be.

BTW, is Joel’s appearance on “The Nerdist” archived anywhere?

Shout! arguably has at least twelve movies in its catalog that would be prime riffing fodder, and it would be a good way to keep costs down for the crowdfunded season. Sort of like how Sci-Fi dipped its toes into MST3K by having them use the Universal movies the channel already had the rights to.

Brandon Pierce: Heck, we still don’t know if he’s voicing Gypsy or not, or if Gypsy will even be on the new series!

No way Gypsy will be discarded. I think she hasn’t been brought up because her recasting is not an issue that fans get vocal about. After all, her voice and personality are easy to ape, as evidenced by how unacknowledged the transition from Mallon to Brantseg went during Season 8.

I seriously don’t think Jim would bother to voice Gypsy unless he still had some kind of controlling stake in the show and obviously neither Joel nor anybody else wants that. Plus Jim is busy with his new therapy related career as a life counselor which is likely an additional reason why he was finally willing to sell off the rights:

Also, Jim didn’t even do Gypsy’s in the Sci-Fi era once Patrick Brantseg started playing her.

But yes, interesting that Gypsy is not seen anywhere in the Kickstarter promos, maybe Joel decided she just doesn’t fit in as well this time for whatever format they’re going for in the hosting segments? In any case, I’m sure she’ll be back in some form.

Ugh, sorry for the double post above.

Anyways, I noticed this comment on the Kickstarter page suggesting they do some radio shows too in order to get the word out:

“Joel and cast needs to start hitting the am morning radio shows in the major markets. Mike Nelson was interviewed on Elliot in the morning for DC101 I’m sure they are fans. They could reach a ton of people.”

I tend to agree with this, it could help as there are surely fans out there who don’t frequent the internet as much as we do who still don’t know about the reboot.

In this Yahoo interview posted today, Joel mentions Gypsy as being in the main bot cast. New bots will be brought in as well.
