Weekend Discussion Thread: ‘Reboot Within a Reboot’

Andrew writes:

When MST3K first went big time, they redid some of their KTMA episodes, which, in my opinion, was a very good choice as the Comedy Central versions were much better. That being said, are there any episodes from the CC or Sci-Fi days you’d like to see given a second treatment?

Me. I’d like to see one Supermarionation movie. Maybe something from “Fireball XL-5”?

What do you think?

I could go for a proper riffing of SST – Deathflight. I actually dig the movie, but the plethora of celebrity cameos was BEGGING for riffs. Movies primarily involving planes and airports (Starfighters, San Francisco International) are my personal favorite episodes, and this reriff would bring about a triumverate of flight films.

Tangently related, It would have been rather fitting if the final episode of the Sci-Fi Channel run had riffed “The Green Slime”. Not only would it have “framed” the series, but the closing scene of the movie would have beautifully paralleled the fate of the Satellite of Love, both burning upon atmospheric re-entry.

    Sincerely,

    Bill

Anything from Season 1 is fair game, as all those riffs are so sparse it’s barely tolerable. My first choice would be ROBOT MONSTER.

Personally, I think it’s better if they avoid any movies that have already been riffed on by any of the MST3K crew; including Rifftrax, Cinematic Titanic, The Film Crew, and the KTMA season. No sense inviting unwelcome comparisons between the various groups when there are plenty more bad movie fish in the sea, and a lot of long-time fans will have already seen them, and not really want an unnecessary retread. (I know I didn’t really have any desire to see Santa Claus Conquers the Martians riffed on a 3rd time after it had already been tackled by both MST3K and Cinematic Titanic)

That said, I wouldn’t be abhorred if Joel announced they were planning on revisiting some of the KTMA movies they didn’t reuse for season 3. I think we can all agree those early episodes weren’t really indicative of what our first riffing team was capable of, so it’s not really a slight against Joel, Trace and Josh if the new team comes in and tries to do a better job.

I would also be all for tackling more “movies” in the same series as classic MST3K titles. There are still plenty of Rocky Jones serials (I would love to see them riff on The Gypsy Moon which features a goofy 1950’s version of Google Translate that only works on John Banner), Master Ninja 3-6, Gamera vs. Jiger (which I recall they only skipped the first time because their version had a gross scene involving parasites in an elephant’s trunk that didn’t even make it into the AIP print) or any of the other Ator, Fu Manchu, Deathstalker, or Gor flicks.

I would love to see “do-overs” of some of the lost Cinematic Titanic films that never made it to DVD, like Doll Squad and Samson and the Seven Miracles of the World (both of which I was lucky enough to see live) but I’m sure that would ruffle a few feathers.

If they did re-vist some of the KTMA stuff, it would pretty much ensure that the originals were officially buried for good, and that might be ok.

Fortunaltey there’s no shortage of crap movies in the world, and the new crew should be free to take their own path.

Am I the only one that likes the KTMA era stuff better than the redos? Not only do I like the non pre-scripted quips, it’s hard to believe the conceit of a show (guy and robots making fun of a movie they are watching) when they are watching a movie twice, as opposed to just reading lines off a teleprompter/script (which is why I could never get into CT, it just felt far too phony).
