Weekend Discussion Thread: Pet Names

Alert regular Paul opines:

While watching the recent RiffTrax Live showing of “Mothra,” I made the observation that Mothra was like a giant pet to the two fairy girls. It got me wondering if any MST3k fans have named their pets after any of the characters from MST3k or the films or shorts seen on the show, or would contemplate doing so.

For instance, if I had a pet boa constrictor snake, I’d name him after Coily the Spring Sprite from “A Case of Spring Fever” (get it?). If I had a pet fish, I might name him Dr. Z from the “Blood Waters of Dr. Z” experiment. What MST3k-related pet name would you name a household animal companion of yours after, if you haven’t already?

Maybe some MST3k fans have named a pet turtle after Gamera, or a pet lizard/iguana Godzilla? Or maybe a fan could name a lazy cat Droppo, after the laziest man on Mars from Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.

I never did this, but I had a friend who had a slightly slow but loyal and friendly golden retriever who I used to call Gypsy.

You?

    The Little Creature –

We have a rescued boxer named Gracie after Gracie Allen. She acts stupid, but she’s really a smartie. We call her “The Little Creature” so often that her ears perk up when she hears it, kind of like me when I hear an MST3k catchphrase. What do you think, sirs?

I used to have a black cat that I should have named Puma, since he liked to jump out at people and try to give them a heart attack.

Not so much a name of a pet, but a pet name. I borrowed the T from Crow’s middle initial and included it in my pet name for my wife. I’ll spare your morning bacon and eggs and not say what that schmupie name is. Also, my wifi is named Tom Servo

I’ve always wanted a cat named Robert and a dog named Andrew from “The Touch of Satan”.

Cat jumps on a hay bale in the dark.

    Farmer: Is that you Robert?

    Mike: Robert the cat?!?

Farmer: Your supposed to be in bed.

    Crow: With Andrew the dog.

My wife wants to get a cat or a dog. I have never actually had a pet in my life. I told her we can get either animal, but if we did, I had exclusive naming rights.

And no matter what, that pet will be named Rowsdower.

Thanks to MST3K’s riffing on The Sea Creature (which, by the way, would be a great name for an aquatic pet), it would be easy to name your dog “King” so you could say, “That sounds like King’s bark!”

Not from a movie, however, my wife and I once upon a time had a bird named, Crow, a cat named, Servo and a basset hound named, Gypsy Pearl. We did have another bird that we named, Rodan.

We have five cats and a dog. Our sweet little dog (a Schnoodle) is named Comfort (after the agent from SECRET AGENT SUPER DRAGON), and one of our cats is named Minski (from the same episode). Two of our other cats are named Vena and Timmy (he’s huge, and he’s all black). (Portia and Chuffy are the odd cats out — from Shakespeare and P. G. Wodehouse, respectively.)

My wife and I got a jet black female lab/golden retriever mix puppy back in ’94, the year after we were married… the first addition to our family. Given our love for MST3k, it seemed fitting to name her after Gypsy.

She proved to be a great dog… a little dense, quite a spaz, energetic and lots of fun. We had lots of adventures I can’t recount here. We lost her back in ’09 after a long (14 people years) full life.

    IF –

If you got a little Great Dane as a puppy you could name it… Glenn Manning!
If you got a Pekinese you could name it… The the Eye Creature!
If you got a Bulldog that constantly got his collar up around his ears you could name him… Crenshaw!
If you got a Bassett Hound that sounded fierce, but hardly moved you could name it… The Creeping Terror!

Cat people, you are on your own.

If you buy a small edible fish before watching Catalina Caper you could call it—capers!
If it grows too big just throw it in the pond where the fish lives.

Suggestion for a future topic (thinking of Tom Servo’s catchphrase beloved by millions:
“You know you want me baby!” How about catchphrases (and backstory) for film characters
    or Mike/Tom/Servo/SoL guest visitors, etc.?
The citizens and officials of Rutland, Vermont might like: “Take all the maple syrup you like.
    We’re giving it away.”

We have a Pomeranian named Ivy. She barks a lot (as Pomeranians do) and we are always telling her to be quiet. Perhaps we should have named her Iris, so we could just say, “Shut up Iris!” Of course that would be mean, so I think we will just stick with Ivy for now and leave out the shut up. Maybe next time…

I used to work at a small independent movie theater in college, and we were one of the few screens that showed the MST movie when it was released. Consequently, I have watched the closing credits sequence countless times. For some reason, the line “Bix Skahill and his big band!” was burned somewhere in my brain. In 2002, when I got one of the best cats I ever had, the name Bix just seemed to fit him perfectly. RIP, Bix, you were one of the best.

Just realized this. Long before MST3K — in fact, even before Manos was made — the first dog my family had when I was just a wee lad, back in the mid-sixties, was a little black Cocker Spaniel named “Pepe“.

Coincidence, or was it… nay, could it have been… the “Hands of Fate?” :talktothehand:

We have a neighborhood tomcat whom I’ve taken to calling “Karl” as in the last segment of Final Sacrifice. While he enjoys quality food items of any kind, he nonetheless resists all takeover attempts.

If we adopt another female kitty, we’ve decided either “Pearl” or “Livia” and if it turns out to be a male “Frank” or “Professor Bo-Bo.”

Most of my cats came to me named, so I gave them MST3K middle names.

    Rainbow Bridge (past cats)
BobCat Mitchell – he was big and lazy like Mitchell
Bickford Rowsdower – had the fur color, temperament and size
Buddy Benton – was eager to serve (as a love bug, not soup)
Smokey Troy – he used to cry out at night when I first got him, much in the manner Troy called “Rowsdower!”

    Current cats
Fera Greta – much like Mitchell’s girlfriend, she has the “don’t hate me because I’m beautiful” vibe
Chloe Nastenka – she’s a small girl with a cute meow (the opposite of the Marfruska I wanted at the time)
Blackie Malla – she was older when I adopted her, like Malla she had to make a long journey to become young again
Peanut Abby – because she’s “some gal”
Bob Mickey – much like the gardener in “Screaming Skull” he’s goofy and not sure of the new person but ultimately came around

I actually forgot my favorite thing to say to her. “Skoo-tah has a good hot!” saying “hot” instead of “heart” like Joel does. I love doing that. Non-mst3k nicknames for her, “Sceezer” (Scooter + geezer) and I’ll say “Scooge, where’s the other 2 Scooges?” I know the Mst3k guys love the 3 Stooges. :)

    Off topic.

Mike, Kevin, and Bill have riffed the horror film “Ruby.” It’s available on rifftrax.com.

A film critic for “Variety” described the film:

“In the cookbook school of filmmaking Ruby is strictly leftovers. Begin with a hunk of the occult. Add a cup of 1950s nostalgia, some hardboiled detective, a dash of camp from old horror movies and sprinkle with violence.
Most of the pic’s action takes place around Ruby’s Drive-In. Piper Laurie is the one-time gun moll and wife of a big-time mobster. She now owns a drive-in staffed by ‘associates’ of her dead husband. He was gunned down 16 years ago when someone finked on him, but his spirit is back to haunt the drive-in.
He gets the job done: a projectionist is strangled with film; a concession stand attendant stuffed into a soda machine; and the dead mobster’s daughter afflicted with a case of the shaking bed.
    Performances are generally poor.”

    Enjoy.

Not a pet, but my last car was named Muskrat Suzie after Abby from Riding with Death. I call my current car Pepper. It has a double meaning – they make a lot of references to Police Woman on the show (“Pepper, you’re going undercover!”), and Clara Bow who is my fave actress played a character named Pepper in one of her films.

I briefly had a small aquarium (a week-long power outage caused by an ice storm ended that adventure). But while it lasted: I had several tetras who were all named Ken, a turtle named Gamera, a plecostomus (sucker fish) named The The Eye Creature, and a big fat fish (I forget the species) named Big McLargehuge (or Blast Hardcheese, or Bob Johnson).

It’s not a pet name from an MST3K movie, but we named our dear, departed basset hound Humphrey, primarily because of Kevin’s dog. Then again, apart from appearing in the ACEG, Humphrey was also a mean, scary werewolf according to Professor Bobo…so maybe this isn’t so off-topic.
