Catching Up on the News

We’ve had a little down time, so, to catch you up…

* Our buddy Paul reports in…

Some time back, the Kino Lorber label released “The Incredible Two-Headed Transplant” with a pre-made RiffTrax audio commentary as a selectable option.
They’re doing it again in October. They’ll be releasing the Ted V. Mikels cult classic, “The Astro Zombies” on DVD & Blu-Ray, features a never-before-released RiffTrax commentary track.
Ted V. Mikels directed The Girl In Gold Boots. Kino Lorber announced this title back in July on their Facebook page.

* Last week’s MST3K Monday title at RiffTrax.com was “The Touch of Satan” and this week was “Time Chasers.”

* The recently launched Comet TV, which as near as I can make out, is a digital network similar to channels like “MyTV,” that run on local affiliates’ secondary over-the-air digital channels will begin showing classic MST3K episodes this month. Thanks to our pal Timmy for the heads up.

By the way, how many outlets running MST3K eps, including some PBS stations and Pluto TV, does this make? We’ve lost count.

* And finally, two new classic MST3K episodes are streaming on Shout! Factory TV: “The Violent Years” (an all-time fave of mine!) and “Last Of The Wild Horses.”

The first two Comet episodes will be Manos, The Hands of Fate and Teenagers from Outer Space. At least in the Seattle area they will air at 8:00 on Sunday and show both episodes. Enjoy.

Mike, Kevin, and Bill have riffed the horror film “Ruby.” It’s available on rifftrax.com.

A film critic for “Variety” described the film:

“In the cookbook school of filmmaking Ruby is strictly leftovers. Begin with a hunk of the occult. Add a cup of 1950s nostalgia, some hardboiled detective, a dash of camp from old horror movies and sprinkle with violence.
Most of the pic’s action takes place around Ruby’s Drive-In. Piper Laurie is the one-time gun moll and wife of a big-time mobster. She now owns a drive-in staffed by ‘associates’ of her dead husband. He was gunned down 16 years ago when someone finked on him, but his spirit is back to haunt the drive-in.
He gets the job done: a projectionist is strangled with film; a concession stand attendant stuffed into a soda machine; and the dead mobster’s daughter afflicted with a case of the shaking bed.
    Performances are generally poor.”

    Enjoy.

It’s apparently available on OTA channels locally (Rochester, NY), but the house antenna won’t pick it up.

However, Comet streams online free with no subscription required.

Just did a search in my Comcast guide and there are no upcoming listings for MST in there (San Francisco Bay Area) so I guess we don’t have these channels here. Guess I will make do with all my DVDs, but it WOULD be fun to see it listed!

Also, someone mentioned the new Rifftrax of “Ruby” above, and out of all of the MSTs and Rifftrax we have seen THIS one prompted my husband to say after “um, that was a REALLY bad movie”. Clearly I have never played “Invasion of the Neptune Men” for him LOL.

Yes, two classic episodes. I may have to check out the stream sometime because we don’t have it in the Knoxville, TN area. It’d be nice to see the episodes that aren’t out on tv yet. Fortunately I have the DVDs anyway.

The only problem with the Comet showings (which we get here in Syracuse, NY) is that Comet is airing them in two and a half hour long time slots. So right off the bat that’s an extra 30 minutes of commercials per episode, more if they trim any content or do any time compression. I wonder if that extra deluge of commercials might be a potential turn-off for some people who would be discovering MST3K for the first time on Comet. It’s still good to see original episodes on the air again, though!

So, if I understand it correctly, if I buy “Astro Zombies,” I can play it with the Rifftrax commentary and it will basically be like getting any other Rifftraxed film from Rifftrax? I’m assuming Rifftrax won’t be releasing this as a VOD then? Are there other films that have Rifftrax commentaries that weren’t released by Rifftrax? Soooo many questions!

Surprised more people aren’t celebrating the availability of “Time Chasers” in reference quality in a downloadable format. A top-tier episode I’ve been waiting to have digitally.

Yes, and you can switch from RiffTrax audio to the film’s audio with the press of your Blu-ray remote. (I have The Incredible Two-Headed Transplant on BD.) My understanding is that the RiffTrax commentary for the previous release was already recorded and released by RiffTrax directly prior to the disc released by Kino, but this is brand-new and recorded specifically for this release.

Wasn’t there a release of Road House on DVD years ago with Mike Nelson’s solo riff included?

Comet TV is airing right now on Time Warner cable in Fayetteville, NC. It is on channel 1266 if you have the “extra” cable package. It is scheduled for 2 and a half hours, so there a lot of commercials in between!

Comet is one of those networks that serve as a digital subchannel for many over-air TV stations. It’s sci-fi based but they do have Ring of Honor Wrestling, which is also owned by Comet’s parent company, Sinclair Broadcasting. I do get it from my cable co. and it was nice to join in on a live tweeting session with many other people. I just usually live tweet by myself when I pop an episode in the ol’ DVD player.

Watching Manos on Sunday for the first time in years, I had forgotten how truly terrible the movie was. What I mean is, the plot just makes no sense. Michael ignores repeated obvious signs that something is clearly wrong at The Valley Lodge. He dismisses his wife’s concerns repeatedly. I mean, just going in the building and seeing the painting of Frank Zappa and the Doberman would be enough for me to go right back out to my car and leave.

Additional news of possibly dubious veracity: My roommate returned from Dragon*Con Monday, and stated that Bill Corbett said at a panel that he would be joining the new MST3K crew for filming at the end of the month. This would probably need to be verified by Bill or Joel before it’s anything other than hearsay and rumor, but it’s exciting to me nonetheless!

Also, they’re apparently recording a special anniversary version of “Roadhouse” with Mike, Kevin and Bill.

It has already revealed via Kickstarter updates that Bill, Mary Jo and Kevin will reprise their roles on the new show on a special guest star basis. It is quite likely to be an episode or two at the most. That must be what Bill was referring to.

A new Roadhouse!!!! I’ve been begging for that one but I still want to see that as a Rifftrax Live.

Yes, the fact that Bill is involved isn’t news. But I think this is the most specific info we’ve gotten for filming dates.

I think that time has passed. Not sure anyone cares enough to gripe OR that it’s really that big of a deal anymore. I was just happy to be sitting there, not paying attention to what was next, and hearing the theme start.

The type of commercials does hark back to the midnight showings where they would show the same commercials every break. Doesn’t bother me. Something comforting about it.

Hey all … just wanted to say that as I was browsing channels yesterday afternoon, lo n behold there were 2 episodes of MST back to back on Comet! (Giant Leeches first, forgot the second title)

Great to see these back on the boob tube!

One complaint, however …I saw the titles listed on the on-screen guide, right…so my wife and I are sitting there waiting for Giant Leeches to return from commercial – not to watch, but just to actually SEE old MST on the air again, ha — and so we sit and wait…and wait…and wait…and then wait some more. So we look again at the schedules, and each episode’s time slot is 2.5 hrs …ha, so, Comet is apparently running several-to-ten minute commercial intervals. Ridiculous. Auh well, still good to see ’em on tv again.

For those playing along at home, the reason why Comet cut the final host segments on both Manos and Batwoman is because they both displayed the contact info for the MST3K Info Club. The theater segments are also edited to remove the contact info as well. Because they can’t go back to the original elements to remove it, the only option they have is to completely cut out any scenes that display it. I’m assuming there must be some legal no-no in displaying defunct contact info on TV, or someone in Hopkins, MN doesn’t want their PO box overflowing with MST3K fan mail. :-D
