MST3K: The (Nearly) Definitive KTMA Segment Collection

Among the many well-documented epochs in Earth’s history, little has been studied of the year known only as “The KTMA Era.” During this time in 1988, Joel and the bots partook in a pre-season of sorts in which their orbital antics were broadcast only to the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. Recently, archaeologists have worked around the clock to recover documents from The KTMA Era hoping to learn more about human culture before the widespread availability of cheesy movie riffing.

Though some footage from this primordial age was inevitably lost (or possibly still await discovery locked in some ancient, underground tomb), scientists have painstakingly reassembled every existing KTMA host segment and used advanced technological techniques to transfer them all to the disc you hold in your hand. Thanks to the miracle of science, we present The (Nearly) Definitive KTMA Segment Collection.

I wonder, will the KTMA segments come from fan copies, or from the master tapes we understand Jim Mallon kept after KTMA production wrapped? I think the master copies would have higher A/V quality than the home VHS copies that have been uploaded to YouTube.

Whew – barely 3 or 4 volumes left – and that’s assuming they can get the rights to some of the “impossibles”. Taking out the “impossibles” I count 2 more volumes.

This KTMA DVD seems like a pretty nifty bonus. I hate paying $60 for these sets – but these bonus disks I think are worth the money.

I honestly can’t remember any of these four episodes – but my completist mind just gets excited at the idea of getting one step closer to all the episodes!

Like skierpete says, we’re sooooo close to having every episode on DVD.

Of course, some of the earlier sets are now out of print, and there was the whole Godzilla thing, but…if you have purchased every set up to now (including the oops-illegal Godzilla one), then you’re within a few episodes of completion. And that’s me! Plus I’ll own every one of the new episodes thanks to Kickstarter.

And let’s not forget about this crazy good KTMA bonus disc.

This is a great time to be an MST3K fan!

Why would any KTMA host segments be missing? I thought Mallon had all the master tapes and possibly even digitized them prior to Shout!’s acquisition (as evidenced by the reference-quality clips he put on the old official site)?

Also, I’m stoked for Track of the Moon Beast. One of my favorites and I’ve been waiting quite awhile for it.

The most recent update on the Revival’s Kickstarter by Joel seems to imply at least one KTMA ep MAY be released this Friday. Unless it’s going to be a digital version of this whole disc instead or something.

Well, the clips on MST3K.com were higher quality than those from the fan tapes, so at least those exist. But given the language in the announcement, they may not have them *all*.

I’d love to be wrong but I think they can only get one more set and that’ll be it. The five Susan Hart movies, Rocketship XM and Fire Maidens From Outer Space are irrationally expensive. The two Paramount movies and Godzilla are probably too costly for Shout to turn a profit on. That only leaves 601- Girls Town, 623- The Amazing Transparent Man, 905- The Deadly Bees and 913- The Quest of the Delta Knights. I’m not sure but isn’t even the ownership for Quest in question?

I could totally be wrong, but this is what I had noted after Travis’s last update (when the volume XXXVII titles were announced) for the titles left after this announcement:

    Likely:
    Amazing Transparent Man
    Quest of the Delta Knights

Either not likely or extremely likely:
    Girls Town
    The Space Children (in 2017)

    Not Likely:
    Fire Maidens of Outer Space
    The Deadly Bees
    Diabolik

    Extremely Unlikely:
Godzilla, Rocketship X-M, Attack of the Eye Creatures, and the Susan Hart 4 (Amazing Colossal Man, It Conquered the World, Terror From the Year 5000, and I Was a Teenage Werewolf)

But keep in mind that “Track of the Moon Beast” was listed as “Not Likely”, so that might give us hope for the other three in that category. Plus Shout! Factory has been known to perform miracles. Who would have thought that we’d get the Gamera episodes?

I`d be OK with a set of re-issued single episodes, the first ones from Rhino. Have THE AMAZING TRANSPARENT MAN & 3 of those for the next set if no others pan out from the list.

  21. Alex says:

Well, the set’s a bit predictable, but I’m not going to complain because I know they’re coming towards the end of the road and the episodes are all good episodes.

However, regarding the KTMA segments, I really hope Jim didn’t goof up and just toss out all the master tapes and we end up having fan copies of the host segments as replacements. While I’m not the one to complain about quality too much, all of the KTMA copies on YouTube are all incredibly washed up and it would be really nice to see them restored.

  22. So, the host segments from the first 3 KTMA episodes won’t be included? On one hand slightly disappointing, but on another hand not totally surprising since they’d probably have to go to Jim Mallon for those, and I guess he’s still refusing to let anyone see them.

I wonder if they’ll remember to include the previously lost host segment from K15 – Superdome.

If Shout bought the MST3K property from Best Brains, I doubt they’d let Jim Mallon retain any property beyond the usual souvenir considering the money they shelled out for it. I’d imagine they’ve just had to exclude the odd KTMA segment because the master was damaged or had some sort of defect. I remember reading an interview with Brian from Shout Factory after they’d bought out Best Brains. He said they were looking forward to sorting through the MST archive so they could mine it for future DVD releases. And I’m so glad they dug out the KTMAs for this one.

Happy Thanksgiving indeed. I just pre ordered mine.

I can’t believe that Shout Factory, which has done an amazing job since taking over for Rhino, would let so many titles go unreleased. They must have something up their sleeve.

As for the payment, if you order by credit card they charge you when they ship. Paypal they charge immediately.

So, all public domain episodes this time? Interesting.

To be honest, none of the episodes on this set are big favorites, though High School Big Shot is probably the best one here. I’m holding out for the next set; a dream line-up for me would be Diabolik, The Deadly Bees, Quest of the Delta Knights, and Girls Town.

Well, my money’s down! Who would have expected Shout to do three bonus discs in a row? I certainly didn’t. And I wasn’t prepared to get KTMA material until it really became crunch time (which perhaps it is). I would have thought that they’d try to release full episodes once they either released all the CC/Sci-Fi ones, or ran up against a wall as far as rights.

The fact that we’re just getting the host segments makes me wonder if Shout plans to ever try releasing full episodes or if they’ve secretly cracked those final codes to get all the regular eps out and will move on to the Netflix shows from there.

I think there will definitely be a lapse between new classic episode releases and Season 11 DVDs. I’m sure Kickstarter rewards aside, Netflix has at least a year of exclusivity per season tied to their deal. I could see them dropping in a couple of Rhino singles to get a full 3 sets next year, but I think this is the end of the road after that, there will likely always be 5-10 episodes we’ll just never get official releases for. The nice thing is that they will probably be leaving the door open on further DVD releases, I could see Season 11 and beyond being packed into volumes for people who slept on the Kickstarter, and the continuing reissues of the old Rhino sets. Who knows, if they keep that stuff rolling long enough, the Susan Hart situation could change down the road. Fingers crossed.

    What a great set!!!

High School Bigshot is a Top 10 episode for me. And Track of the Moonbeast might be my favorite Sci Fi episode. Certainly among the very best. Colossus has Nummy Muffin and Invasion USA has one of the all-time best shorts.

Shout Factory continues to do an exceptional job.

From some superficial rummaging around wikipedia, it seems like she’s just paranoid about being taken advantage of. Probably a legitimate concern being a woman in Hollywood.

I cannot comment too much about the future other than not only will Susan Hart give all the needed permissions to Shout, but that she will be featured and interviewed in a Ballyhoo documentary.

The Susan Hart Barrier will be breached by none other than Ms. Hart herself – from her side of the great wall.

It was the answer all along.

    All along.

(however, the Godzilla Situation will never be truly resolved, but Shout will eventually release the MST3K Godzilla episodes as expanded sound sync files with additional new riffs added for those parts of the full length films that were edited out to fit the MST3K format. You will supply the movies. I hope this helps and was worth it, because traveling through time is exhausting. And painful!)

Judging by this, Susan Hart and Wade Williams are friends in real life, and Mr. Williams may well have been advising her in her business decisions. Maybe they’ll have a change of heart at some point. I don’t want to be too hard on Williams because after all he’s licensed several MST3K episodes. It is Rocketship X-M that he has drawn the line at for reasons that appear to be personal.

I don’t usually preorder MST3K sets, but I’m all over this one because they’re all episodes that I’ve never seen (all the way through) before, and because of the amazing KTMA bonus disc! As a longtime fan of the KTMA season, I never dared to hope that any of that material would ever see an official release, but I’m pleased to see them finally dipping into it. Here’s hoping that it generates enough interest for Shout Factory to consider releasing full KTMA episodes … and that the “pretty special treat to share, which some of you have been waiting a long time for” that Joel has been teasing for the next Kickstarter rewards turns out to be one of the long-lost KTMA shows!

While I’m sad that ANY episodes won’t see an official DVD release, I’m truly amazed we got this many. The handful or so that are left I all have very good copies of (some of them are so pristine even a DVD wouldn’t be an improvement) so it doesn’t bother me all that much.
