Weekend Discussion Thread: MSTed Movies: The Musical

Alert regular Timmy asks:

I went to see “Wicked” a few weeks ago. During the play, I thought, what movie from the show would make a good musical. I thought: “Manos” (Torgo sings a song to his theme) and “Daddy-O” (like “Grease”) There WAS no “Monster A Go Go” play. So what’s yours?

Oh I think “Fugitive Alien: The Musical” is already half-written. But the budget would be taken up buying blonde wigs.

    “Giant Spider Invasion: The Musical!”

    Featuring:

“Giant Red Sheriff” “I’m a big red sheriff with an urpie stomach…oh yo!!! oh yo!!!!”

“Cousin Billy” (to the tune of Louie Louie) “Cousin Billy….Cousin Billy…..Say how much it’s worth……..yayayayayaaaaaaaa…….”

“Chasing round the table” “I’ll be chasing my stepsister round the table when I’m mad……I’ll be chasing my stepsister round the table when I’m mad……..”

    And last….

“Packers won the Super Bowl, Packers won the Super Bowl!!!”

Any movie from MST3K as a musical. When you go down the list, some of the concepts are staggering.

Just a few for example that I don’t think have been mentioned yet:

Phase 4 w songs like “Ants, we’re ants!”
Superdome: The Musical, featuring the hit “There’s no football in this play!”

Robot Holocaust – I’ll just let that one sit there

Side Hackers – elaborate set pieces, way over acted “my own flesh I don’t love better!” That’s the new Hamilton, right there.

Red Zone Cuba – the chorus of Cherokee Jacks

Soultaker – I mean, this just writes itself

All of them have such insane possibility. I could go on and on…
Final Justice – Go Ahead On
Kitten With A Whip – He’s a buddy, buddy, buddy
Slime People – tons of fog

That Final Justice musical cited above:

The dirge sung for Goosio (dispatched by robot or robots unknown) at the festival all but stops the show until a
a donot fed Yanqui is heard to admonish to the participants to “Go Ahead on!”

The exciting chase scene (music from Peter and the Wolf) has been compared to the
chariot chase in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum as in: The Forum chase
was really good. This one sucks.

Of course the lyrics to the opening scene when the head sheriff is shot “Slip Sliding Away”,
was considered a bit in questionable taste.

The Magic Sword might be a bit obvious, but hey, it’s a high-fantasy, save the princess adventure. Plus, Basil Rathbone would probably sound awesome singing a Disney style villain song as Lodac.

The lack of on-camera dialogue in Beast of Yucca Flats makes it amenable to the structure of “Movin’ Out”, in which there is no dialogue, none of the actor/dancers sing or speak, and all the words are performed by a singer on a platform above the stage. Though instead of a Billy Joel impersonator our narrator here is a crazed homeless man rambling incoherently about progress and flags on the moon.

    Monster A Go-Go, The Musical –

Let’s go with a classical music score, so how about… Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony!

    (How’s that for nerdistic?)
