RIP Mary Tyler Moore

Greenwich, Conn.–Mary Tyler Moore, whose comic timing and all-American beauty made her a leading TV star and Emmy Award-winning actress before she took on dramatic roles in films, and whose 1970s situation comedy about the life of a professional single woman was considered a cultural and feminist milestone, died on Jan. 25 at a hospital here. She was 80.

Her series was set in the Twin Cities, and so there was no way it, and she, couldn’t come up on MST3K. She and the series were referenced many times in theater riffing and she was mentioned in host segments in episode 311- IT CONQUERED THE WORLD and 1010- IT LIVES BY NIGHT.

The Washington Post has the story.

    “Oh Rob!”

Didn’t the final episode parody the final MTM Show with the Tipperary thing as well? Lost count of how many theater references were made to The Dick Van Dyke Show and The Mary Tyler Moore Show. What’s crazy is I still have never seen a single episode of either show but I got the refs because everyone (on TV and in magazines) was always talking about those shows and how important they are/were back in the 80’s and 90’s.

The Mary Tyler Moore Show is her famous one, but I’ve never seen a single episode of it. I only know her as Laura Petrie.

    RIP

One of the few times I thought Mrs. F was really funny. “Come on, dammit! Sing!” RIP, MTM!

One of the great ones; what wonderful moments she left us.

Blessings and peace to those close to her.

May she, along with Chuckles the Clown, rest in peace.

I’ve always liked her and was sad to hear this. I caught some reruns of the MTM show when I was a kid but hadn’t seen any of the Dick Van Dyke shows (that one wasn’t in syndication in the 80s when I was growing up I guess)until a few years ago. They are on Netflix for anyone who has that and hasn’t seen the show. It’s a really fun show and she got to show off both her comedic skill and her dancing abilities.

So long, Mare! Say hi to Chuckles for us!

If you had told me 40 years ago that Ed Asner would outlive MTM, I wouldn’t have believed you.

Amazing…like Jack Klugman outliving Tony Randall, Ed McMahon > Johnny Carson, Walter Matthau >Jack Lemmon, Abe Vigoda > Anyone.

I was born in the late ’60s, so along with All In The Family, and Bob Newhart, The MTM Show was one that my parents–and subsequently, my sister and I–watched regularly …now of course, it wasn’t until yrs later that I understood just how intelligent and progressive the writing on those sitcoms was (especially in comparison with the bulk of garbage that passes for “must see” tv)

I have to confess, however, MTM’s role in Ordinary People (1980) really took me aback, as the icy cold, monstrous character she portrayed in it was in such stark contrast to her warm and comical roles in the Dick Van Dyke Show, and then her own.

    RIP and God speed, Mary.

Not to bring down the board some more, but Mike Connors from Mannix just passed away. I mention him and his show, which I finally got to see recently, because it was mentioned several times during one of those Godzilla episodes. “In France Mike Conners is considered a genius.” and “I saw this on Mannix, once.” R.I.P Mike Connors and Mary Tyler Moore
