Joel Announces Season 11 Debut Date

In an email to backers last night, Joel answered the question everybody has been asking:

The new season of Mystery Science Theater 3000 will premiere on Netflix on April 14, 2017.

And there was much rejoicing.

Here’s a cast photo Netflix posted:

    Yay.

For real, though, that’s great news. Congrats to Joel and everybody else who worked to make this happen!

From what I’ve heard, there have not been any shows which Netflix releases one episode at a time. If that’s true, it seems unlikely that they would change their ways for this “little cowtown puppet show”. Personally, I plan to space my consumption of them out between this spring & next winter. It just seems like watching them all inside of one or two or even three months would be so sad once it ended.

In fairness to Sampo, there hasn’t been a lot of regular news, and a lot of the news that has come out has been through Kickstarter with Joel often asking the backers to not share it with the general public. I would think that it’s not easy to thread the needle of what to share and what not to share on the site, but I think Sampo has handled it well.

Sampo has said that he’ll be updating the episode guide with the new episodes, but until the episodes actually come out there’s not a lot he can do about that.

There’s Chelsea Lately’s show, but that’s a talk show. In the UK, Netflix added Breaking Bad on a weekly basis as it aired in the US.

But I do think it seems unlikely Netflix would release this in a way that differs from its standard model.

Also, it’s one day after the first Rifftrax live of 2017:

We’re kicking off the season with a live show featuring one of our most requested titles of all time, SAMURAI COP, the story of a dumb, leather-jacketed, giant-mullet-wearing detective who sorta fights like a samurai but mostly tries to pick up women with the sophistication of a drunk frat boy!

We’ll riff this cult favorite LIVE on April 13th, 2017.

Most of the updates on the Kickstarter were for backers only. Satellite News was probably just respecting Joel’s wishes to keep the info close to the vest. Joel chewed out the backers for spilling info about additional tickets for the recent screenings

Thanks, Goldbootz. I don’t do many online series so not sure how they normally work. :/
I’m with you, though: no binge-watching for me!

NickH: Sampo has said that he’ll be updating the episode guide with the new episodes, but until the episodes actually come out there’s not a lot he can do about that.

It would be great fun if we jump right into Season 11 once these debut and cover them in the weekly episode guide. As a community, those of us who want to savor the new eps and take them one at a time could watch in advance each week and be ready to discuss. It would be “just like the old days”… well, almost. Of course, you binge-watchers can do your own thing. ;-)

I know that it might be a lot of work getting these in weekly for Sampo and Erhardt, but the Ep Guide would not have to be as comprehensive as it is for the “classic” episodes, and will of course evolve over time.

Think about it, won’t we? Thank you.

NickH: In fairness to Sampo, there hasn’t been a lot of regular news, and a lot of the news that has come out has been through Kickstarter with Joel often asking the backers to not share it with the general public.

Yeah, I agree. I think Sampo has walked a line and is trying to respect Joel’s wishes, so the info here has been publicly-released stuff only; I don’t like to see folks impugn him for that (heck, I don’t like to see impugning PERIOD). Hats off to him! In fact, I’m a little more piqued at the secrecy that was been dropped over the project. I’m a KS backer so I get all the super-secret updates, and I’m sure Joel has good reasons for what he’s doing, but it does seem a little much. To me. For what it’s worth. Which is not much. ;-)

    Countdown to new episodes, anyone?

Having finally been driven out of my skull, up the wall, and out screaming over the hills by “Shocking season-arc finales!” (yeah, whatever, a “good” character turns bad and blows up the building, and one of the regular characters dies in the rubble, is that the shock?), I finally decided to blog my own highly detailed opinions on Netflix/Hulu Binge Culture last summer, let alone what it’s done to the TV industry:
    http://movieactivist.blogspot.com/2016/08/august-5-2016-tv-activist-pt.html

I know why we want to, but why does our culture think we HAVE to? The fact that, like Droppo, we think we “deserve” to, probably speaks more about our Millennial tantrums about Mommy & Daddy’s Tuesday-night-on-ABC generation.
Which thrill of novelty is only going to have a year or two left, when subscription streaming polarizes its audience into the TV-Binge kiddies who want “new series”, and the old folk who remember when Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime had actual movies available on them, before the studios started starving them out hoping we’d all buy Digital.

Even if they do release them all at once, I’ll pace myself a one a week anyway. I just don’t have the endurance for true binge watching. At best, I could go though the equivalent of the content of a single DVD in one sitting.

The only bad thing is that it won’t be quite the communal experience that it once was, everyone experiencing the series at the same pace. Some people will watch the whole thing in 3 days, others 3 months.

Yeah, which means that discussing the episodes will be a problem, particularly if there are spoilers.

My preference is still to have them all available at once and watch at whatever pace I please. But since I won’t be getting them at all until/unless they are released on DVD, it’s all moot to me.

Except, that’s not what I’m referring to.

I’m referring to Sampo’s almost begrudging acceptance to talk about the show.
His dismissive tone when he ever gets around to talking about it. The fact that he labels it as a “reboot”, when the preferred nomenclature is “relaunch”.
His refusal to cover updates and news regarding the relaunch even when it is kosher to share such things. Etc.

RiffTrax releases a new streaming video and that gets immediate front-page news! But the MST3K Kickstarter has a livestream on the last day of the campaign, or they cross a major funding threshold, or new casting is announced, or lost episodes K01 and K02 are found and released and outside news articles pick up on it, and suddenly “it’s not my job to update for every single thing”.

I was trying to be oblique before, but I guess I have to spell out what I mean exactly.

Which is why I hate the internet. Gone are the days of “appointment TV”, where we all watch the same shows and gather around the lockers next day at school to discuss the latest episode. Now everybody’s watching their own unique show and no one can have the “DID YOU WATCH THAT PLOT TWIST LAST NIGHT?!?” talk and…life is lonely.

I remember on another website I started up a discussion thread for the “Voltron” reboot on Netflix last year, and I posted something like “Okay everyone, let’s watch the opening episode and come back here and discuss it” and one of the first posts in the thread was someone saying “Okay, I finished the first season, that was awesome!!” And I’m like “it’s been less then 12 hours since it hit Netflix?!?!!?!”

So maybe for part of me it’s disgust: I work 2 jobs, make sure I spend time with the wife and kids, I can’t find time to binge watch a favorite show of mine. So some lazy jerk out there is sitting on the sofa watching all 10 seasons of Doctor Who (from 2005 onward) and I’m still on Season One. I just want to shout “NO FAIR!!!” to the universe. I WANT MY FRICKIN’ CHILDHOOD BACK!!!

…But yeah, still looking forward to new MST3K.

Don’t be jealous that you can’t binge. Merely pity those who do:
My FRICKIN’ CHILDHOOD involved identifying days of the week by which shows came on–I still have a hard time watching Monty Python, MST3K or Star Trek series on any other nights besides Friday, Saturday and Sunday, resp.–but it says more about Binge Culture that the fanboy kids HAVE to Consume the Show In Mass Quantities literally before even discussing it.
And why? Because binge-shows don’t have “episodes” anymore, like Chuckles the Clown, walnuts from planet Twylo, or “Monster a-Go-Go”. They have CHAPTERS, because we’re being told a serial arc of one story per year, until “the next season” arrives. We don’t talk about watching “episodes” anymore in our casual TV lingo, we talk about when we can watch the next “season”.
Probably because we already consumed the earlier season in one binge, thinking we were watching One Story.

In a way, considering the physical IronMan marathons you have to put yourself through to binge quality entertainment in your home, TV fandom now actually IS asking that you jump off the roof just because your friends are doing it.

Okay, the “reboot vs. relaunch” thing aside, there is something to be said for the amount of Rifftrax coverage (and coverage of The Mads). If Kevin Murphy is interviewed in a podcast for “Some Guy on the Internet”, it gets a mention. If Frank appears in a skit for “Some Guy on Youtube”, it gets covered.

But the freaking RETURN OF THE SHOW, THE MAIN EVENT!….up till now, doesn’t feel like it’s been covered enough.

I guess it goes back to the old debate, are we here to follow the actors, or are we here to follow the show (or can we do both, going forward)?

TarlCabot: The fact that he labels it as a “reboot”, when the preferred nomenclature is “relaunch”.

That bugs me too, but I don’t see how it implies any kind of derisive ulterior motive. Somebody already linked an EW article upthread that uses “reboot” in its title tag, and I saw it used on Ars Technica earlier today too.

I don’t like it when people misuse the word “literally”, either, but I’m not going to go ascribing sinister motives to it.

I do think it’s pretty strange that the site never bothered to cover something as major as the release of the first two KTMA episodes. But on the other hand, I’ve gotta figure that 100% of the people who read this site found out about it anyway, without needing a blog post here to tell them.

And, ultimately, I don’t claim any particular knowledge to what Sampo’s up to in his day-to-day life, but I can tell you that I’ve got a blog and I can count the number of times I’ve updated it in the past year on one hand. Sampo’s got a pretty good record of regular posts; if he doesn’t keep up with every piece of news on the revival (there’s another “re-” word that works better than “reboot”!), well, you’re free to criticize, but I think your assumptions are off-base. Blogging is a hobby; sometimes people don’t get around to doing it as often as their readers would like. There doesn’t need to be any more to it than that.
