Greg Sestero, who you might know from such roles as Mark from The Room

To top it all off, Mark tries to pull off a French accent for the entire movie that somehow ends up sounding even faker and weirder than Tommy Wiseau’s.

Why do I sense that the RT guys didn’t pick this one out of any particular interest in the previous Full Moon/Charles Band entries?
And, it’s one of the David DeCoteau ones, like “Curse of the Puppet Master” which could out-gay Nightmare on Elm Street 2.

Nothing you said here makes sense. Just stop. You’re a random Rifftrax complaint generator.

Meaning, we get three culty Wiseau/Room jokes in the description that have nothing whatsoever to do with the movie, except that the RT guys want to stretch some more cult-of-fandom bucks out of whatever other movies IMDb said the actors or director was in.
It’s like the movie doesn’t even have to show up if they’re going to be too focused on beating dead-horse Room jokes.

You guys don’t get it. Eric J is here to help. Every single time he makes one of his predictable posts about Rifftrax being predictable, their sales go up. What better way to show fondness and appreciation for what they do than to pull a Tony Clifton and pretend he’s some loathsome, pathetic curmudgeon obsessed with their product. The reverse psychology always does the trick, bringing in more attention and interest than the usual boring praise. If he really didn’t love and respect Rifftrax and everything Mike Nelson does, naturally he would just stay quiet about it like any sane Gus would. I admit I too used to fall for it, defiantly buying and donating on his behalf before realizing the genius of his act. Well, now it’s all harmless good fun and I’m happy to say I just grabbed a copy of this latest VOD, and it is pretty gosh-darn funny. Thank you, Eric J! May God bless you everywhere you go.

I can attest that there are only a few Room-themed jokes. The movie is seriously weird and stilted. minor SPOILER: puppets slowly fighting mummies, not as exciting as you would think.

  12. I love the PUPPET MASTER films. At least the earlier ones. This was the second film in the series I saw, after CURSE OF THE PUPPET MASTER. I didn’t like it much at first, but it grew on me around the third viewing. I’m glad RiffTrax has decided to tackle one. Even if it was likely only because it starred Greg Sestero. If there are any other fans here, you may like to know this is the Region 2 European version, which includes footage not seen on the North American VHS or DVD releases.

According to imdb, Wisseau was depressed by Sestero going to Romania to do this film. He snapped out of it by starting a new brilliant film project…you guessed it.

    Thoughts on Gordon Currie?

I don’t think they overdid it with the Room jokes. The riff was fine, but the movie was just too slow. It didn’t lent itself to riffing. The later Puppet Master movies are just insufferable because they don’t have the budget for the one thing anyone cares about in these movies, the puppet movement.

Trancers III or IV would be good Full Moon movies for riffing.

I think EricJ actually has a point here.

They didn’t pick this movie because it’s good for riffing (El Rey had a Puppetmaster marathon not too long ago and this is easily the most boring/worst), but simply to capitalize on the connection to The Room. They did the same with that Birdemic guy’s movies. The other ones weren’t particularly goofy, just terminally dull. But they just had to do it to capitalize on the Birdemic connection.

Hopefully now with MST3K back, they will step up their game, do better movies, hire better (or different) writers whose jokes aren’t the same thing every movie

I have to actually agree with Eric myself. This is a cash grab for “The Room” connection because it’s “internet trendy”.

They could have easily something better such as Puppetmaster 1 or 2, I would have liked to see 2 as it’s my favorite. (Still, wish 2 had six-shooter in it. What kinda prequel has a new puppet?)

If I had to guess a what was a cash grab, Retro Puppet Master wouldn’t be high on my list. More likely is Rifftrax approached Full Moon (or vice versa) and the studio said “You can riff one of these four films for the $10,000 (or whatever) licensing fee.”

The guys looked at the films available to them, saw one of them had a connection to The Room and decided that would be a good entry point.

If they’re hoping to grab cash simply based on something starring Mark from The Room, I hope they have something to keep their other hand busy.

If they’re hoping to grab cash based on cult-of-fandom associations with The Room, Birdemic, and/or Star Wars Holiday Special, they DO have something to keep their other hand busy…

Charles Band wasn’t as “brilliant” as Roger Corman, but you can at least see his hand in the early Full Moon Puppetmasters. (And admit it, “Tourist Trap” is a bit of a freakout, even with the RT riffing.)
By the time we got “Puppetmaster vs. Demonic Toys” on SyFy, the Full Moon label had sold out like Corman doing Megashark movies, and it just became embarrassing.
This would be around the time David DeCoteau was doing the movies (who got his start in gay porn, which he carried on to the “1313” direct-video horror series), and…Toyland, you saw Curse of the PM??? Yeesh!!

It’s alright I guess. Nice production values for a cheap movie. And the guy’s Pepe le Pew accent is sort of amusing. But it’s not a very interestingly bad movie.

It does contain absolutely not a hint of nudity or naughty bits activity, and virtually no violence – even when Pepe le Puppeteer gets beaten unconscious by the Swiss Embassy’s goon squad (no, really, that happens in the movie) and dumped in a snowbank, he comes to in totally okay shape. Maybe that was a factor in picking this, I think the others in the series are more teenslasheresque.

Nah, the “car crash” in Replica alone was worth ten bucks to me. It is staged on a level so inept that it circles back around to brilliance. And “Julie and Jack” has a twist at the 45-minute mark that’s genuinely inventive, if downright insane. I’m glad I bought both of them. And I’m looking forward to tossing a few bucks at Retro Puppet Master when I get the chance.
