Yeah, sure, MST3K Phase II is happening soon, but can we get some word as to what’s coming out on set XXXIX? I know we normally have to wait until after the next set streets, but I already got set XXXVIII via the pre-order and being an impatient cuss that I am, howsabout a taste of what’s coming?

And normally, I adore Shout Factory’s bonus features, but did anyone else think that set XXXVIII seemed kind of meh compared to the other ones?

There was an often shown commercial at one time (for some Time-Life books, I think) that had a little boy asking his father, “Daddy, what was Vietnam?” Joel used that as a riff. The commercial was an early indication that the baby boomers were getting old.

    If that’s what you’re asking.

Ohhh, now I get Brock’s comment! Yes, 90’s MST3K, like CC and all early-90’s cable, was so saturated with marathon two-minute 1-800 ads for Time-Life’s Western and Unexplained Phenomena coffee-table-book series, you might snap and shoot somebody just fer snorin’ too loud….Coincidence? Read the book.

I am completely familiar with the riff and its origins. I remember the commercials. My observation is that so much time has passed that the riff “What’s Vietnam?” could be replaced with “What’s what’s Vietnam”. I’m thinking of a little boy asking his father while watching Mst3k “What’s what’s Vietnam?”

If you started on April 2nd at 2am and watched all 286 hours of MST season 1 through 10, you would catch the start of season 11 just 5 minutes after crow is saying “this movie seems familiar….”

    Pacific time, that is….. :)

Just ran across an interview with Joel, Jonah, Baron, and Hampton at Splitsider from yesterday.

    Couple of highlights:

Fortunately, on the other side, after the Kickstarter, Mary Jo [Pehl] and Bill [Corbett] and Kevin [Murphy] agreed to come back. Mary Jo and Bill are writing on it, Paul Chaplin who’s a longtime writer, he wrote over 150 episodes, he came back and wrote an episode and he performs in it. And then Beez McKeever who built all the props in the Mike episode and did all the costumes for the robots, came back. So did Charlie Erickson, who wrote the theme song, he came back and did a bunch of music. So we tried our best to lay in as many of those original people as possible. And also to help seam the new show with the old show, so Pearl and Brain Guy and Bobo come back to the new show and make appearances.

Is this the first time we’ve gotten confirmation that Paul Chaplin will be appearing onscreen?

    And then this tidbit:

Like, part of the narrative of the show is that Jonah’s a maker. So he uses CNC machines and laser cutting, and he has a fab lab in the satellite loft, so these props he’s building look like that.

I think that’s a nice touch. A little bit of a 21st-century upgrade for Joel being an inventor.

Just hurry up and get here!! So I stop reading and go on to something else and relax. All the people involved sound like great people and performers so it’s difficult to suppress my anticipation of this great and wonderful thing that seems ready to go as it is!! Oh well, maybe it’s just me. Plus I’m trying to get over a bad cold and am all light headed and loopy from the meds. Deep breaths… ;-)

Nah, nice dark text, wide font, 18px size — very readable! A really refreshing web design choice in this age of thin letters and light grays.

Oh, that’s not what you meant?

I’m excited too, but hey, we’ve been waiting almost 18 years as it is; what’s another three and a half weeks?

…hell’s bells. I’m 34 years old; I just realized it’s been more than half my life since the show ended.

Off-topic: I just read that YouTube is discontinuing annotations, which presumably means we won’t be seeing any more annotated episodes. (The existing annotated episodes will still work; the feature’s not being removed from videos that already have it.)

Reptilicus? Well, it’s no Gorgo, but I remember seeing goofy public-domain stock clips showing up in other movies and TV shows.
I know I’ve seen the movie with the battling coneheads (“Beyond the Time Barrier”, I’m guessing?), and do I dare hope that cheap silver titan is from “Starcrash”? :)

It’s still too early to judge the hosting and riffing, but TV’s Son of TV’s Frank didn’t seem to fall far from the tree, and the new Pearl Forrester doesn’t seem to be too annoying (yet).

When EW fired most of their writers a couple of years ago, they seem to have fired their fact checkers, as well.

The article lists the original MST3K as having a nine year run. :struggle:

After watching the trailer, I have to say I like it. What I like is that they’re keeping the retro look and feel to the show. I thought it was an abomination when they added new FX’s to the original Star Trek episodes, they look phony like a video game FX. The low budget effects of MST gives it a charm, and the show is not about the effects, it’s about comedy and satire of low budget films.

(Bad imitation-Nordic accents abound in the dubbing like bad imitation-Japanese accents in the 60’s Toho’s, but look like the riffing won’t go to town on that aspect of the movie as much as the M&tB era would fall into the temptation of doing.)

Whoo, Getting KTMA vibes from the sets. Nice!

I *am* a little worried that the intro is either going to be too long (and take too long getting the theater riffing), or be too rushed, and feel forced. I guess we’ll see when the show premieres.

taking a totally wild guess, i think the “movie in the hole” guy -might- be adam savage! (maybe kinda sounded like his voice, plus since “fire in the hole” was such a necessary staple-phrase on mythbusters, just seems like maybe that’s the first cameo we get to see!)

Joel did mention at one point that he wanted the opening to be shorter and get J&TB into the theater quicker. Not sure what that’s going to mean in practice, though since it’s Netflix and there are no commercials there’s not much sense in having an opening host segment, an act break, and then another host segment before the movie.
