Vol. 39–the end of the line?

We have news Shout about Volume 39 and the future of MST3K releases:

The set will be available Nov. 21, 2017, and available for pre-order on the Shout! Factory website and Amazon later this week. We hope you’ll share this update with your readers.

It will be a four-disc set, here are the titles:

The Amazing Transparent Man
Girls Town
Diabolik
“Satellite Dishes”

The 4th disc, called “Satellite Dishes” is a collection of the host segments from episodes from the remaining unreleased episodes. They are:

Ep #201 Rocketship X-M
Ep #212 Godzilla Vs. Megalon
Ep #213 Godzilla Vs. The Sea Monster
Ep #309 The Amazing Colossal Man
Ep #311 It Conquered the World
Ep #416 Fire Maidens from Outer Space
Ep #418 The Eye Creatures
Ep #807 Terror from the Year 5000
Ep #809 I Was A Teenage Werewolf
Ep #905 The Deadly Bees
Ep #906 The Space Children
Ep #913 Quest of the Delta Knights

Despite our best efforts to include the remaining unreleased episodes, due to licensing issues, it is very likely that Volume 39 will be the last collection of never-before-released episodes, and that these remaining episodes may never get a legitimate release. With this in mind, we decided the next best option was to release the remaining host segments by themselves.

We’re not going to get the missing Amer. Int’ls next year, and never for the Toho Godzillas (if you didn’t buy 10.0 when you had the chance), but I’m also in the “Never say never” camp.
I only had to upgrade five of the above-listed titles left from my own collection, and the rest is the Soultaker-like problem of Sci-Fi grabbing recent films. Things change, but slowly.

Hooray for Girls Town and Diabolik!

Girls Town is one of my favorites and Diabolik is obviously a landmark.

Never loved Amazing Transparent Man but it does have the hilarious “matches for Mikey” moment.

Smart solution to release the host segments for all other unavailable eps.

I’m surprised they haven’t considered at least a Shout Exclusive set for the KTMA episodes. At the very least some of those titles would be easy to acquire and would be instant upgrades to the tapes recorded by fans.

  7. Well, it’s disappointing but not surprising — heck, the real surprise was getting all we did get (and these last three are worthwhile indeed).

For me it’s no big deal as I have broadcast quality episodes of the remainders, but I would have bought them (as I’ve bought them all). Still, it was pretty amazing how many were actually released.

They need to release the KTMAs as a compliment to this set, regardless of the quality of the footage. It’s bound to be better than what we have and they won’t likely get another chance.

  10. I don’t think they can locate the rights holder for Delta Knights. I’m surprised about Space Children and Deadly Bees, since they were available for free on youtube courtesy Paramount for a while. Thought they’d be willing to part.

I’m honestly shocked Girls Town got the nod. Thank goodness, though – it’s my favorite episode, one of the funniest episodes of television I’ve ever seen.

The fourth disc is kind of cool, if a bit cold comfort; I’d honestly rather they just give us three discs and cut down the price instead, rather than serve up a dog’s breakfast of (probably good!) sketches I could find on YouTube without too much problem.

  12. Ah finally! An announcement! And it is bittersweet to be sure. I know Wade Williams has his personal reasons for not letting them have #201, Toho obviously won’t give up even a few of the lesser Godzillas for more than a second, and Susan Hart has her own goofy reasons.

But the rest? C’mon! What kind of money can be made elsewhere with some of these? The Space Children? Delta Knights?

I hold out hope for individual releases if nothing else as they become available. I also like to think that they shot the works to get Diabolik if nothing else.

And there’s a cynical part of me wondering if monies spent for season 11 movie rights could have diverted attention away from some of these unreleased episodes. I am probably completely wrong on that and I’d be fine with being wrong on that.

But I would’ve enjoyed having Fire Maidens instead of having At The Earth’s Core or Reptilicus available.

As I mentioned on the Facebook post, I wonder if Shout can separate the audio of the riffs from these missing episodes and sell it just as RiffTrax does. Perhaps pad it to meet the full length of the films which were edited. Then listen to it with the unrifled version of the film. Not ideal but better than nothing…

It’s pretty amazing they got it down to 12 unreleased episodes. For the ones other than those we knew for sure we’d never get, it’s not surprising to see hold outs. People are stupid. Often thinking that any demand makes things more valuable than they are. You’ll see it all the time on eBay, where someone has an action figure WAY overpriced just because its old. Hell, I have a near mint Magnavox Odyssey 2 that even I know is barely worth a thing despite how rare it is to find one in such great condition. So now it’s just people holding out thinking what they have is worth more than it is. So credit to Shout for not buckling.

The problem is with Rocketship XM and the Suan Hart films, there aren’t even official unriffed versions they could pair the MP3s with.

I’ve said it before and it deserves repeating: Shout has always gone the extra mile for the fans. I doubt anyone could accuse them of not doing everything in their power to acquire the rights to the remaining films. Hopefully one day circumstances will change but if 12 out of 198 episodes is all we’re missing then I’d say that’s pretty damn good. Viva Shout! :D

  18. Good and bad news. I guess this was inevitable. I’d like to see take a shot at putting out a DVD set of four episodes they don’t movie rights to and see how long it lasts. If the word for a pre-order got out in the right way, this could be done. ;)

Anyway, I hope Shout Factory doesn’t stop trying to get some movie rights.

I didn’t realize that was out there, but it doesn’t seem like it would be too readily available if a few thousand people were suddenly searching for it.

I’ve been waiting for news of this nature for months now. I had a suspicion that “Girls Town” was going to be released if “The Painted Hills” could be, and I am SO happy that ‘Diabolik’ has finally been cleared. That episode alone is worth the price of admission.

Now, about that other half of this announcement…

Some are saying this was inevitable. I think this declaration is a bit premature.

Now don’t get me wrong, I am supremely grateful for everything Shout! has been able to do for this show over the past several years. “Above and beyond” doesn’t even begin to describe it. However, as Micheal alluded to above, does this mean they’re going to stop trying to get the rights to these shows? As a loyal supporter, it pains me to countenance the idea of giving up on getting everything out, even if it takes another ten years.

Since I see Volume 6 is getting its reissue in a couple of months, I’m presuming that the remaining Rhino sets are going to follow in due time. One would also hope that the remaining single-disc releases from Rhino (Hellcats, SCCTM, etc.) get reissued too, perhaps in a box set of their own (11.5 maybe?). So between that and the truly inevitable release of Season 11, it seems like there’s still plenty of material for Shout! to work with while continuing behind the scenes to clear these remaining 12 episodes.

Two all Mike sets in a row to finish things off. Which leaves (if you don’t count Colossal Man since it was on VHS briefly and Megalon in 10) 5 Joel and 5 Mike unreleased. How perfect.
Like many others, really glad to finally get Girls Town, as well as Diabolik and Transparent.

My guess as to how the releases will play out:

Rhino sets will continue to be issued, 7-12 still to go, 10 being 10.2 obviously. Once those are all out, Vol 40 and 41 will consist of a mixture of: Crawling Hand, Hellcats, Santa Conquers Martians, Eegah, I Accuse My Parents, Batwoman, Red Zone Cuba, and Beginning of the End and/or any of the unreleased episodes.
Or, if any of the unreleased episodes are cleared, single discs may be issued instead.

Thanks, Chris and majorjoe. Somehow I had it down that K17 Time of the Apes was the one on Vol 22 – obviously wrong; probably a copy/paste error on my part since I started with a complete list of all episodes and basically was gradually checking them off as they got released.

When I got into collecting these sets (vs just making do with the DVDs I had burned from DAP files or made by VHS transfer) I quickly went and bought all the Rhino “back issues” I could find at any reasonable price, but that might not have included 8 and 9, hence their absence. (Does 9 only have 3 discs?)

Are the singles in question (Crawling Hand, Hellcats, Eegah, I Accuse My Parents) Shout/Rhino/mixture ?

Paramount has the rights, but they’ve licensed it out to Olive for the time being.

9 had four episodes, Incredible Strange Creatures who Stopped Living blah blah mixed Up Zombies is the other. All the singles were originally released by Rhino, some were rereleased by Shout.

    @Lisa
“Incredible Strange Creatures who Stopped Living…” was also released as a single by Shout, and the four singles you’re missing are all Rhino releases that have not be re-released by Shout (and I think they’re the only Rhino singles that weren’t re-released in some way by Shout). It’s sounds like you have all the Shout singles, but none of the Rhino ones.

Related question- do you guys think Comet is trying to get TV airing rights for Season 11? Because they’ve been airing some of the movies from the new season recently (not the episodes obviously, or else I wouldn’t be asking). Like Reptilicus and Yongary have been there a couple weeks, but they just added At The Earth’s Core.

I’d guess that’s because Shout Factory already had the rights, so could use them for both MST3K and Comet.

I’m sure Netflix has exclusive rights for a specific amount of time. To my knowledge, House of Cards is the only Netflix show that has gotten broadcast on regular TV and the deal Netflix made for one of its first shows might not apply to any others.
