While out and about, has anyone ever seen someone wearing MST3K clothing? I never have. But then again, I don’t get out much.

Thank the heavens I haven’t been wasting my time watching the daily clips, hoping for some KTMA material. Even though I have the episodes, I’m still very interested in this ‘Genesis’ page.

Hey there, #3 – I wear my Planet Logo T all the time, and my Cinematic Titanic shirt (though I’m a little tired of all the people coming up to me to tell me of their love for the movie “Titanic”). I love the MSTiegear. I do admit I’ve only ever seen one other person besides me wearing an MST-shirt – walking around Harvard Square in Cambridge, MA (my old home town). Anyway, I’ll try to get out more so more people can spot me in my stylin’ shirts :^)

It’s about time they put some of the early stuff up there. Shirt and miniposters look nice too. Hell, I’d buy the barbeque sauce if they put it out- both bold and extra bold.

I’m sure someone will answer me this, but isn’t MST3K.com pretty much run by Mallon? I’m sure everyone gets their cut of merch profits, I just have such a hard time going there thinking it’s in any way inflating Mallong’s ego. He already seems to act like MST3K was mostly his idea as opposed to Joel’s.

Of course if I’m wrong about any of that I will humbly appologize. That’s just how I’ve always felt about it.

#13 yeah I think Mallon pretty much claims it as his own but mostly I think that is due to him being “owner” of the product. I believe the writers get something from sales of the dvds but not the charature stuff like T shirts. Mallon stil has the rights to those. I think the real credit goes mostly writers and the production people. You can’t copyright the soul of the show but you can claim it in your hearts.
I also wear my mst3k and ct shirts whenever I can. Mostly people say that’s a cool shirt and I love that show!

I wear my white on black MST3K shirt all the time. I used to get comments from random people saying the show was awesome. If I have time I’ll tell them about rifftrax and CT websites if they want more. I don’t wear my I’m HUGE or Bite me shirts much anymore, they’re getting old and my lady friend thinks other people will get the wrong idea.

I really would like more MSTie shirts with logo’s that don’t say “i’m a mstie” unless you look close. I plan to get the USAMC, looks cool to me.

  17. “I’m sure someone will answer me this, but isn’t MST3K.com pretty much run by Mallon?”

If you mean Jim Mallon, operator of Best Brains, the production company behind Mystery Science Theater 3000, then, yes. Since it is the intellectual property of Best Brains and Jim runs Best Brains, he runs MST3K.com.

“I just have such a hard time going there thinking it’s in any way inflating Mallong’s ego.”

So you’ll buy merchandise from a faceless corporation (or semi-faceless like Shout!), but buying from one of the people who actually helped bring this wonderful show to you is a problem because of your perception of Jim’s ego? Have you met Jim? Have you ever read or listened to an interview with him? Or are you just taking your opinion from the vast wasteland of the Internet, upset because he “drove Joel out” or because he denied you an Anniversary episode or because he did those (admittedly lousy) animations?

“Of course if I’m wrong about any of that I will humbly appologize. That’s just how I’ve always felt about it.”

You’re wrong about pretty much all of that. Mallon, as far as I know, has never claimed to have created the show and I defy anyone to find a quote where he does.

Was he a “creative force” on the show? Of course he was. He was the producer, a writer, a performer, and a director.

For good or for ill, this is the way things have shaken out. Joel left the show and it remains in the hands of his production partner, Jim Mallon. Joel may have regrets, but he doesn’t seem bitter about that fact. It’s just the way things are.

The reality is that there are precious few media properties that stay in the hands of the people who produced them, let alone the person or persons actually responsible for their creation.

Do you expect Jim to just call Joel up one day and say, “Hey, you know what? It was wrong to allow you to leave the show. I should have gone. Here’s legal control over MST3K and all things related.” Or would you rather he do nothing but sit quietly in an office, supply the appropriate tapes for the DVD release, but otherwise pretend like he wasn’t an integral part of the show for its entire eleven-year history? (Something, I believe, no one else can say.)

“I think the real credit goes mostly writers and the production people.”

    Like Jim Mallon.

Really, does every post about MST3K.com have to include a slam at Jim Mallon? I thought we were past that.

MST3K Volume XV is now showing on Amazon. It is not yet available for pre-order, but you can sign up to be notified when they start taking orders. http://www.amazon.com/Mystery-Science-Theater-3000-XV/dp/B001XW7ICC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1237937638&sr=8-3

As for the question above, quoted for context:
    >> “Really, does every post about MST3K.com have to include a slam at Jim Mallon? I thought we were past that.”

No, many MSTies are not “past that”. Since it appears Mr. Mallon was largely responsible for the show’s brilliant and talented creator, Joel Hodgson, leaving the show, and since that had a huge impact on the show’s future history and not always for the better, many people still resent Mr. Mallon being in control of those beloved robot characters and the name and format of the show. Furthermore, Mr. Mallon’s refusal of Joel Hodgson’s offer to produce new material for the show’s 20th anniversary last year has only deepened that resentment.

@#3 – when I was in Dublin last June, standing in line for the Guinness factory, I saw a guy wearing an MST3K T-shirt. Of course I commented on it, and he said he got it on eBay. I don’t think he shared my excitement because he was American and didn’t know that you *never* meet MSTies in the British Isles (except at Sci Fi London all-nighters, roll on May!).

I think new “material” that excluded Mike, Kevin, etc. would have created deeper resentment for many. I don’t think Jim was wrong in raising questions as to who would be involved and the how. The outright “refusal” I think is mostly something the fans have assumed. I’m sure if the idea was a solid one and not hastily thrown together (animated web-store content aside) I doubt Jim would have any problems. For instance, would we have been totally accepting to a full on episode akin to the green-screen 10.2 sketch? Some of us maybe.

I’m sort of disappointed that they didn’t reproduce the poster of Mike and the Bots (plus Mads)… I’ve got the original, but it’s a strange size, so I’ve never been able to find a frame for it.

Addressing all the continued Mallon bashing:

Every time you bash Mallon, remember those pretty MST DVDs you have and all the billions of hours of phone calls to lawyers and production houses and rights holders to the original movies. And all the time spent over the years making the show possible from the business side.

Jim is a business guy, so I don’t fault him for acting like one.

I wore my Crow and Servo T-shirt until it fell apart. Then I had my grandmother make it into a pillow. Then I used it until it fell apart. I have other MST3K t-shirts but I don’t wear them because I don’t want them to fall apart either. I have an original MST3K:TM shirt that I definitely don’t want to ruin. I need new MST shirts so I don’t care if I wear them out.

Actually, an entire green-screen episode like 10.2 would be most welcome by fans, as long as either Josh or Kevin provides the Servo voice this time. If that’s a cost cutting measure, big deal. Do it.

The shirt’s awesome. Kind of wish two of the posters weren’t posters I already had and the S.O.L. one isn’t of the (imo) cooler season 7-on model…. Why didn’t they shoot a group shot when Joel and Frank were visiting for “Soultaker”? Frank could’ve been holding a framed picture of DR. F or the Dr. F star baby and the Dr. E milk carton…

I see a lot of people wearing MST stuff at horror conventions I go to. At the height of my obsession I had 12 different shirts and wore a different one each day and NOTHING ELSE!

I have yet to buy any clothing, but I did buy the coffee mug and two “Clown in the Sky” CDs. Once I get a more steady income, I’ll fix that.

However, I did see a guy with an MST3K baseball hat walking along Wells Beach, ME one day. I almost walked up and asked him about it, but thought he might think I was some crazy guy.
