Weekend Discussion Thread: Second (or Third) Time Is the Charm

Yet of Great Danger suggests we discuss…

MST3K episodes that you didn’t like the first time you saw them but which were better and funnier after subsequent viewings. For me, it was “The Skydivers,” thought it was boring as heck and not funny the first time. I think the comments from others at Satellite News — especially the Skydivers-named “Dark Grandma of Death” — made me appreciate the jokes and the movie’s weirdness more. Also, “Time Chasers,” because when I first saw that episode, the movie wasn’t that old and the clothes and hairstyles weren’t as outdated and funny as they seem now.

Invasion USA is a good example for me. Thought it was very dull the first time I saw it, on repeat viewings my rating has improved quite a bit.

You?

GareChicago: I’ll continue to call for his deletion, as he contributes nothing to the forum at all except pessimism and Mike-bashing.

Well, enjoy your flame war, I guess

Fire Maidens was that way for me. Just didn’t get it at first. Now it’s probably my favorite Joel eposode.

absolutely, “Fire Maidens” is definitely one that grows on you. The movie is just SO STUPID like did this thing even have a script? Half the lines sound ad-libbed and comes across like a bunch of 6-year-old boys playing spaceman.
    And then there’s Timmy…

Mibbitmaker: THE INCREDIBLE MELTING MAN – The first time seeing it, I did WAY too much looking away from the screen (not like knowing to “listen” to the show away from the screen during “Charred fingah” part in MANOS or the operation scene in FU MANCHU) for all the gruesome, over-the-top melting in the movie. Later viewings are much easier: I just go on YT and only watch the host segments. Problem solved.

I refuse to watch this one again because it’s so unbelievably gross. Once was enough, thank you.

For me, Pod People, believe it or not. I never really caught on to that disjointed mess of a movie until I saw it in a public setting during Joel’s “Riffing Myself” screening. Now I think I have maybe seen it enough times, I can get into its flow better.

You obviously have a loose interpretation of the term ‘flame war’, but whatevs. Enjoy ignoring me, I guess.

Well, I did it–last night, in honor of this WDT, I went and watched “Radar Secret Service” for a second time (20 years after the first). Yes, it is funnier than I had remembered–I actually laughed out loud on several occasions, which was decidedly NOT the case the first time. (Especially liked the mustachioed bad guy/doppelganger to the mustachioed good guy singing a swingin’ version of “Old MacDonald” as he strides toward the barn.) Still, the movie is such a vast, inert tub of grey goo that you can tell M&TB have to strain every fiber to stay afloat. And here let me recall the last WDT: this is one of those “films” that would be impossible to watch without the riffing: Why did they even bother making it? Literally everyone in the cast and crew mailed in their work–and used the pony express, too (gratuitous reference to “Gunslinger”, which I also watched recently). As for the short–I’ve watched “Last Clear Chance” many times on its own, but it was wonderful to see the host segment again: Mike sticking a sandwich in his eye as Crow says “Why don’t they look?” is an all-time MST3K moment for me! I have a fond memory of my kids laughing and laughing at it when they were little.

Crow’s actual-pencil mustache wins the scene for me. Note how it pops off at the end and Mike picks it up off the desk with a befuddled look on his face.

Fighting online with someone because they don’t like Mike is the very definition of flame wars. Just sad, more than anything. Is there anywhere online all this nonsense can be avoided? Outside of an ignore button that is permanent here? Hmm, maybe Sampo is just tired of it all, and would rather we all leave. Or he’s become like Johnny, who doesn’t care. The Facebook groups aren’t all that great, not many hardcore knowledgeable fans there. I guess the last refuge is the ForrestCrow boards, which are mostly vacant nowadays. The fighting over there has slowed significantly over the years.

Wellll… it’s really got nothing to do with his stance on Mike really – it’s just his constant, condescending, arrogant attitude. I mean, your very nickname indicates that you recognize drama – and the guy goes out of his way to manufacture it.

In any event – my wish that he’d delete his account is, I feel, the opposite of a flame war. It’s just a consolidation of my (and I believe, others) feelings that he’s a trolling man-baby, summed up in three words.

As always, your mileage may vary.

Actually, my name is a reference to another tv show, which I’m more than likely one of the only MSTies to be a superfan of both. And I had too much caffeine yesterday, so I kinda flew off the handle a little bit.
    Have fun out there!

Mike was great at befuddled looks. So cute!

  13. I have a couple that didn’t work the first time..

Time Travelers. Tried to watch it directly after seeing Cry Wilderness and was bored. Son said it was his favorite so I gave it another go and enjoyed it a lot more. The first 15 minutes is still a little rough. I don’t find the ‘Danny hating’ funny until he starts flirting later in the movie.

Time Chasers. I must have been in a weird mood but it didn’t strike me as that great the first time. I think it’s a classic now.

EDIT: it’s bad enough that I have to read EricJ’s comments but then there are tons more comments just about EricJ. I think it’s time for me to just move on to other sites for discussion.

I recommend anyone interested simply post the ‘article’ in the MST3K subreddit and we can discuss it there. They have an ignore feature that actually works!
