There is a story, perhaps legend, that during his ground breaking Soviet Union tour in a Moscow concert Roy received a standing ovation. After the audience had returned to their seats Roy humbly said “I ‘preciate that”. The crowd burst into laughter. Someone informed a perplexed Roy that his rendition of ‘preciate sounded like “Sit down” to a Russian ear. When that was cleared up he and the audience had another good laugh and the concert continued.

A guilty pleasure; I used to watch Hee Haw back in the day. Yes the women were beautiful but I enjoyed the corny jokes and the music was first rate. Watching Glen Campbell and Roy Clark shred guitars and banjos, Flatt and Scruggs playing Foggy Mountain Breakdown, and seeing my childhood idol Roy Rogers. So many other great artists. Thanks Roy, for all the great music.

I used to watch “Hee Haw” back in the day too. The jokes were dumb but (as far as I could tell) clean, and as itsspideyman said, the music was usually top notch.

RIP to both Roy and Glen: https://youtu.be/A-sExIVBVaw

My Roy Clark memory was his appearance on the Odd Couple. It was his playing (I wish I could remember of it was guitar or banjo) at the end that was extremely amazing. You knew that Jack Klugman and Tony Randall weren’t acting when they had these beaming faces looking on.

One of my favorite episodes of that show.

His hand is moving so fast the frame rate of the camera makes it look like stop-motion.
He was truly one of the greatest guitar virtuoso to ever play. And I don’t mean that as an exaggeration. I’ve heard many guitarists from classical to metal speak about Roy with honor and admiration. He’ll be greatly missed.

  11. I was never a country music fan, but I could always appreciate the fact that Hee Haw was clean, wholesome, entertainment.

Let’s not forget, it was also sort of mentioned in the opening scene of Attack of the Giant Leeches.

    RIP Roy.

I must have been living in an 80’s new wave cave, but, I missed out on the Roy Clark phenomenon. I’ve played guitar for 30+ years and taught guitar for 20+ years. I’m ashamed that I missed out on the amazingness of Roy Clark. I remember Hee Haw, but I think I was too young -and even then, I thought it was just too silly to watch! Thank y’all so much for the hyperlinks. Roy Clark was a musical genius!
