Weekend Discussion Thread: Wastes of Film Stock

Our pal Timmy opines:

During the Weekend Topic on Vincent Price, pete_plums_drivers_license said about “Story of Mankind” was a waste of good color film stock. I thought: what films on MST3K (or any film) do you think is a waste of film stock. I am thinking of 2 non-MST3K movies, “Inchon” and the movie “MacArthur” staring Gregory Peck as MacArthur.
What do you all think?

Simple: “Moment by Moment.”

Your pick?

  1. GareChicago: My son made a good point when I mentioned that I thought Rogue One was ok… his question: “Can you name one character?”
    I couldn’t.

Same here: We all know the Empowered Role-Model Heroine, but quick, who was the robot? Who was the blind Jedi?
Who was the token-male Mr. Sleazypants that Disney’s streaming service now wants to spin off into his own series?

    RaptorX8:
    Psycho (1998)
A shot for shot remake of the original. Why? WHY?!

Because…Gus Van Sant sorta-wanted to do it, as he Thought It Might Be Fun to Run a Classic.
Um, pretty much. No, really. The studio didn’t know why either.
(At least we got “Psycho II” because Universal was trying to figure out what to do with an alternate Hitchcock storyboard for the shower scene.)

Re: “Rogue One”, there was Bail Organa (Jimmy Smits), Darth Vader and CGI as both Tarkin and Leia. I thought it was OK, but "Solo" is my favorite of the Disney "Star Wars" movies.

As for "Psycho II", it was actually pretty good, with some interesting twists. Not as good as the original, but what could be?

Oh, and I think the Jim Carrey "Grinch" movie would be a good candidate. Thoroughly unnecessary, and a complete reversal of the message of the original story. Haven't seen the new animated version.
And I still can't think of a MSTed movie that descends to the level of "waste of celluloid". Maybe I'm just too soft-hearted when it comes to MST experiments.

Meanwhile, I’m going to go out on a prognosticating limb here and speculate that the forthcoming “Bumblebee” will fit squarely into the “not-worth-the-film-stock-its-printed-on” category.

Just saw the trailer for “Bumblebee” and I have to agree with you. Now to wash my eyes.

The Ghostbusters reboot, everything about that film felt so forced and unfunny.

I don’t usually do the “they shouldn’t have made it” thing because most tv/movies out there appeal to at least some small part of the population. I’ve liked plenty of tv/movies that others think should never have been made. The way I look at it is, if you don’t like it, don’t watch it, but don’t spoil others’ enjoyment of it.

That being said, “Sidehackers” has nothing going for it and in my opinion should never have been made. Ditto “The Room”. Even riffing couldn’t save either of those for me.

Someone told Cy Roth about casting couches. He made a movie.

New disclaimer at the end of movies: No film stock was harmed in the making of this motion picture. ;)

    (sometimes I’m only amusing myself…)
