RIP John McEnery

We are getting reports that beloved British actor John McEnery died April 16.
His first notable screen role was in 1968 as Mercutio in Franco Zeffirelli‘s “Romeo and Juliet;” he was nominated for a BAFTA Award for his performance. He took the title role in the 1970 film “Bartleby.” He also co-starred in “Nicholas and Alexandra” (1971). He was 75.

MSTies will recall his role as German U-boat Captain Von Schoenvorts in the movie in episode 1107- THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT.

We’re still waiting for a real obit, but here’s a short look at his career.

Here’s a real obit from the Guardian.

Thanks to Timmy for the heads up.

Henson fanboys might recall his appearance in The Storyteller: Greek Myths, where he was Polydectes in Perseus and the Gorgon.

Like probably a lot of my people my age, we watched that version of Romeo & Juliet in school. His Mercutio was really the star of the movie

Damn. He was a good submarine captain. Each time I watch the episode he was in I find myself getting pulled in to the drama of the movie in a way I rarely do with MST’d movies. His performance is a big part of it. R.I.P and thanks friend.

I see what you did there. I read that story (independently–I was an odd kid) in high school. It struck me as so Weird. And in true 19th century fashion, just a tad too long. But it’s stuck with me all these years…
