Weekend Discussion Thread: MST3K-Inspired Foods

Alert regular Duke of Puddles, suggests:

Late last Sunday night I was nursing a ‘Vulcan Mind Probe’ (mentioned in episode 407- KILLER SHREWS) and … ok, it was a cold ham sammich but I was wondering what kinds of food or drink ideas could be inspired by MST movies? Diabolik deviled eggs came to mind.

Me (walks out, looks at the camera and says) “Pancakes … Oh I blew it!”

What’s your pick?

Keep those WDT ideas coming!

BEAST OF HOLLOW MOUNTAIN Carne Guisada –

Slowly simmer any large reptile you find wandering about (be a locavore, you know) until the meat is fork tender. Add in garlic, onion, and chili peppers that burn your gut. After thickening the sauce to the consistency of a Coleman Francis plot line plate up with a serving of refried Boggy Creek beans and garnish with a generous dash of racist stereotypes. Mucho gusto!

So, you’ve got nothing along on the “scientific” expedition to eat but baloney sandwiches and beans? Well, make sure those beans are BOGGY CREEK BEANS with Extra Bold Boldness! How do ya think they got that pop-up camper to pop up, huh?
Remember the slogan: BOGGY BEANS BURN BACKSIDES BETTER!

My MST meal is Saturday morning cereal. Less sugar and more fiber than while watching Bugs Bunny when I was six, but it’s still sort of keeping up a tradition.

MST3K tends to attract fans who are fond of keeping track of the details, statistics, points of interest. Is there anyone out there who has a handle on the ratio of alcohol to food consumption in MST episodes? My gestalt impression is that alcohol comes out way on top of food on a scene-by-scene basis. We could, of course, exclude KILLER SHREWS since it would skew the results completely.

A few years ago, we hosted a MST party just for fun, and we actually served a plate of sauerbraten with a picture of Tawny Kitaen, yucca fries, and a bunch of other stuff I can’t recall at the moment.

(Yep, usually happens with ex-12-step comics: Frank goes through AA, and the alcoholism jokes start turning sanctimonious…At least it wasn’t the “Funny drunks” host seg from Giant Gila Monster.)

It sounds like you are disparaging Frank and other recovering alcoholics. That is intolerable. Would you make a similar comment about cancer survivors?

I’m not disparaging Frank (one of the last great funny ones) OR other recovering alcoholics…Just the “community service” the ones who work as standup comics feel they have an obligation to do, so yeah, guys, if you have to, get it over with and we’ll all feel better.

I hope Michelle’s dad (Girl in Gold Boots), in his rare sober moments, is taking down all these great food ideas for Eat. Ditto for whomever took over the aforementioned Cliff Weismeier’s chi-chi restaurant from Red Zone Cuba. In fact, these two great eateries could merge (“Eat/Cliff Weismeier”? “Cliff Weismeier Eats”?): after all, they both seem to be vaguely somewhere in the SW–what with the tungsten mines and drifters stopping by on the way to LA and all.

I have always absolutely loved the fact that a sentient robot with no internal organs would be eating a sandwich in the first place.

    Vegans –

How many Vegans were depicted in the various episodes of MST3K? I can only think of the subterranean Sumerians in The Mole People who ate nothing but mushrooms outside of a little cannibalism now and then I suppose. I guess we can probably rule out Old Man Crenshaw.
