Gavin MacLeod, RIP

Gavin MacLeod, who cracked wise on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and guided “The Love Boat” with a steady hand, died May 29. He was 90.

MSTies may recall that he was mentioned in a host segment in episode 301- CAVE DWELLERS.

TMZ has the story.

THE LOVE BOAT captain part was the very essence of a good gig for an actor who wanted a steady, well paying, long term role with almost no risks. Mr. MacLeod was reliable and spot on with his reading of the character. Plus, he got to see Charro’s coochie-coochie. RIP.

He was also the memorably pessimistic Moriarty in “Kelly’s Heroes” (“Always with the negative waves!”), and I remember him playing a particularly nasty crook in a couple episodes of the original “Hawaii Five-O”.

  3. There were so many Gavin MacLeod riffs in the show’s run. If someone out there counted riffs I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s in the top five. Crow doing the robot voice saying “must kill Gavin MacLeod” comes to mind but I can’t remember the episode. Next port of call ~ Puerto Heaven.

  4. So many mentions of Gavin and his alter ego Murray Slaughter in 814-Riding with Death. I grew up watching him on MTM and The Love Boat. He always played a decent and lovable character and he will be missed. RIP Gavin. There are very few left like you.

I wonder if at some point early in his career he might have been heard to say,
“Call me crazy, but I have a feeling that one day a TV show from Minnesota about a guy and some puppets is gonna LOVE me baby!”

Also a particularly nasty Nazi (as if there’s another kind) on a couple of Hogan’s Heroes.
