The Terrifying Rumors Are True: Hobgoblins 2

The Shout Factory folks think our readers will be interested–or terrified–to learn about these two new offerings from Micro Werks, a new sub-label of Shout.

HOBGOBLINS: 20TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION
The Hobgoblins are back, in an all-new digitally remastered widescreen 20th Anniversary edition. Old Man McCreedy warned Kevin to stay away from the vault, but he didn’t heed his warnings. Now the centuries old Hobgoblins are loose and setting their deadly sites on Kevin’s friends, who they systematically kill by recreating their wildest fantasies.
Feature film debut of Duane (Pulp Fiction) Whitaker as Road Rash.

HOBGOBLINS 2
It’s twenty years later and poor old McCreedy has been locked away in a mental hospital for his ratings about the Hobgoblins. Kevin and his friends think they’re free from any further puppet attacks, but the trouble has just begun. The Hobgoblins are back to finish what they started, kill Kevin and his friends, this time by recreating their worst fears, then doing them in.
Shot on 35mm and made to look painstakingly identical to the original film, it’s another trip to the depths of bad filmmaking from director Rick Sloane. If you’ve only seen the first, you haven’t seen the worst!
Features Maxim sensation Chanel Ryan as Fantazia.

    Doug says:

I hereby nominate Hobgoblins 2 for either the Rifftrax or (even better) the Cinematic Titanic treatment.

In a perfect world, both would do dueling riffs, plus a CT riff on Hobgoblins (since none of them aside from Mary Jo were on MST when the first was riffed).

    Kris says:

A little part of my soul just died.

But I’ll probably watch it anyway.

Can we entice the guys over at RiffTrax to skewer this bee-yotch?

    Kris says:

    Great minds etc., Doug. :)

    Brandon says:

“It’s twenty years later and poor old McCreedy has been locked away in a mental hospital for his ratings about the Hobgoblins.”

Gosh, I didn’t know RATING Hobgoblins was such a bad thing.

    Ineedanickname says:

It almost sounds like their TRYING to get Rifftrax or CT on this for more publicity and $$$$$. CT won’t do it because I don’t think they like to do intentionally bad movies. Rifftrax though, might take the bait.

    MLD says:

Since the first DVD was pretty bare with the extras…I’m seriously considering double-dipping on this title.

It’s Widescreen (very cool), and has commentary (which might be funny to have on while the movie plays), and the “Disasterpiece” short.

I checked Best Buy, and their price is about 50 cents less than Amazon…which shocked me, since Amazon is usually the cheapest.

As for the second movie, I’ll pass. None of the actors who are replacing the original did anything for me. Plus the plot is half remake, and half WTF.

  • 7
    Bat Masterson says:

Intentionally bad movies are a waste of time.

  • 8
    SimonArk says:

Bat, I’m sorry to see that you are lost. This is CLEARLY not the website you intended to visit…

Meantime… “Deleted Scenes”? How bad can a piece of footage possibly be to not make RICK SLOANE’S standards?

    The mind positively boggles.

Also.. Was it on purpose that this press release has multiple spelling errors? Set their SITES on?

  • 9

    Simon,

I think *you’re* the one who’s lost. The whole idea of a cheesy movie is that it *attempts* to be something which it can’t possibly be.

Simply making an intentionally bad movie falls into the same realm as camp — and hardly worthy of riffing (because the laugh is then on the riffers).

I can’t see either RT or CT taking on the sequel — then again, Mike and Co. seem to want to challenge themselves NOT to do cheese anymore.

    Robyn says:

Okay, I know many of you may be tempted to “ironically” buy and “ironically” enjoy this, but I must “ironically” beg you to reconsider.

  • 11
    Markedman247 says:

More than likely it will be Rifftrax because the others usually need the movies to be Public Domain. However, I am sure that the fans will oblige on a Rifftrax presents…

    Cabbage Patch Elvis says:

I’m just gonna look away until the funny part’s over…

    knifeDBM says:

i’m ticked i didn’t get to comment about ‘the ratings’ first.

    but yeah….i saw that too.

i hope it actually got published like that.

    Lazlo25 says:

No, I’m not paying anything on those two DVDs!

  • 15
    Eduardo says:

    Hobgoblins 2?

I dunno how but I think I just became sterile.

  • 16
    Markedman247 says:

    Eduardo:

I had that happen to me when I watched “D.O.A. Dead or Alive.”

I was certain that Time Chasers 2 would be out before Hobgoblins 2. Who knew?

  • 17

    Will blunders never cease?

  • 18
    Mr. B(ob) says:

No thanks, please, won’t you. I don’t want to see Hobgoblins 2 on Cinematic Titanic or any other comedy show or by itself, never, ever, ever. As many have said before and I will say again, sleazy movies that are actually trying to be funny make poor comedy material for the MST3K type treatment. I never want to see Hobgoblins 2, ever, anywhere, under any circumstances. All of the MST3K cast that are still out there riffing movies can find better material than this dreck. It’s the wrong kind of bad for movie riffing, it’s seriously bad bad, not good bad.

  • 19
    Kenneth Morgan says:

Actually, given the choice, I’d rather watch “Time Chasers 2″ than “Hobgoblins2″.

And, no, I’m not writing this from a mental institution.

  • 20
    BIG61AL says:

I am certainly not going to spend my money on hobgoblins 2 specifically because it has a scene with a woman spraying whipped cream on her chest with her top on. What is the point in that? It’s like wearing a teddy over a jogging suit. No thank you…..I’ll wait until CT releases their next set of dvds.

  • 21

    Sloane made “Hobgoblins 2″?!!

    Wow, there’s no God.

Nope. Not a single, solitary God.

All goodness and joy in the universe just died.

  • 22
    MikeK says:

I’m one of those people who is never sorry that these bad movies were made. If not, what would MST3K have had to riff?

I hope that Riff-Trax can spend some extra time on this one and make some great riffs.

  • 23
    Matt D. says:

To Markedman247 #16- Come on, you didn’t enjoy Dead Or Alive? That was one of the best bad movies ever made. Plus, any movie with Kevin Nash is bound to be good (TMNT 2: Secret of the Ooze notwithstanding).

    To be on topic…Fish Licker!

  • 24
    The Bolem says:

Brandon@#4: Well, if they mean the old guy gave Hobgoblins a rating of 10 on IMDB, wouldn’t anyone who knew that at least consider having him committed?

Between the Rifftrax of “The Room” (whose director is also intentionally blurring the line between his movie being accidentally or intentionally bad) and Rick Sloane now trying to cash-in on being riffed to shreds, maybe all things MST3K are becoming more sybiotic with their targets. This has potential to produce great results at first, but quickly fall down the slippery slope to douchebaggery.

Well, given the things I’ve already said about Hobgoblins on past threads, I guess I’ll just throw out a favorite quote of mine that echoes everyone else’s mixed feelings: “Therein lies our greatest hope; Therein lies our greatest fear…”

  • 25
    Fred P says:

Come on Deleted scenes in the special features. There is no way Rick Sloane deleted anything in number 2. They couldn’t afford to re-shoot.

  • 26
    Brian says:

This is lame, they seem to be 100% pandering to mst3k fans by making this “Intentionally bad”. Seriously? It’s not funny when they fake the badness, I want it authentic. thats what was always so great about so many of those mst3k films. They were trying to make a good movie, and ended up making… Time Chasers, Space Mutiny, Laserblast, etc. etc.

  • 27
    Warren says:

I’m going to watch the sequel. I can’t help myself.

  • 28
    Josh says:

Bat Masterson, I’m with you. It’s one thing to be a parody, or even a loving homage to bad movies, but to intentionally make crap? Posers. I for one, like my crap to be soul-crushingly earnest.

  • 29
    Josh says:

*ahem* Much like the room, which the director is insane enough to think was intentionally made a comedy. Believe you me folks, that guy %100 thought he was making oscar worthy material. Don’t believe a word he says about “black comedy”.

  • 30
    Tork_110 says:

    Wimps.

“Oooh, I can’t watch the sequel to an intentionally bad movie because it’s, ummm…intentionally bad! Yeah, that’s it.”

  • 31
    Cliff Weismeyer says:

I think the best use of everyone’s time would be to have a riff of the Director’s commentary.

  • 32
    klisch says:

I’m curious to see if it’s going to be the actual “actors” from the first movie that appear in this sequel. And I say the word actors very loosely.

  • 33
    Bookworm says:

In addition to the trailer (see a few posts below), there’s also a new interview with Rick Sloan at agonybooth.com.

  • 34

    To quote Bobo, “AAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!”

  • 35
    The Toblerone Effect says:

I’m torn about all of this. On one hand, I enjoy collecting the un-MSTied versions of movies, and if the 20th anniversary edition includes the new version of Hobgoblins, my morbidest of curiousities will want to watch it. However, based on what little I’ve seen of it, HG2 actually looks like a bad parody of an already horrendous movie. Do I really want to put myself through an even worse movie than Hobgoblins, without the MST treatment? So I don’t know what I’ll do yet.

My choice would be alittle easier if the cast shown in the reunion had running commentary on the original.

  • 36

They sound proud over the fact that they’re making a deliberately awful film.

  • 37
    ck says:

It’s surprisining the director’s still in
Southern California. When word of a sequel got out you’d have expected a band of Hollywood producers would have marched on his house chanting “Burn the director, Burn the director” after singing Amazing Grace. (Hey, it’s in the public domain).

Now there’s a thought. How about a sequel to Touch of Satan with the crazy woman played by TS’s evil grandmom.

  • 38
    Chuck says:

    I woke up screaming.

  • 39
    Cabbage Patch Elvis says:

#37: …and Go Packers!!! (But mainly burn the director)

  • 40
    Lena_P says:

No. No nononononononononono. McCreedy would be like, 90 why is he even alive let alone locked up for insanity? That only means A. Excuse for scenes in an asylum, and B. He was the only other member of the original cast who agreed to sign on to the project (with “burned-to-death-but-I’m-okay” boyfriend being the other, I’m sure.) Even if any of the former Brains try to riff this thing, there is NO way I’m going to watch it. To the rest of you who will watch it, I admire your dedication, but you’re nuts. In a good way, but still … nuts.

  • 41
    Lena_P says:

Although I would like to hear Cosmo’s (a.k.a. Daran Norris)thoughts on the original Hobgoblins … When I feel brave I’ll scour Youtube.

  • 42
    kentuckycunctator says:

Damn, I was hoping for a prequel!

    A couple of pitches:

Nick: Think Platoon meets Porky’s. Nick must decide whether he will break all the rules of combat in order to get laid or keep his humanity and still try to get laid in war torn Grenada.

Club Scum: Think “54″ but with a plot. Mike Myers will play the effeminate emcee. Duane Whitaker will reprise his role as Road Rash (I mean who would buy anybody else as Road Rash!).

We follow the story of these two brave entrepreneurs as they operate an after-hours club out of a middle school cafeteria. Myers’ character envisions his establishment as a haven for starving artists (hence the cafeteria backdrop) whereas Whitaker sees the club as a place for him to get free beer and laid. Conflict ensues.

Or this sequel: It’s after the apocalypse…in the hazy distance we see a car parking somewhere…a prune colored car. From it a haggard Kevin emerges clad in animal skins (clothes are plentiful in the future but they are not as liberating as a pair of buffalo-chaps). His career in security guarding a distant and painful memory. He is forced to roam the now deserted subdivision looking for supplies. He is not alone, though.

A race of mutants have been spawned in the apocalyptic afterbirth. Daphne is their leader. Kevin must avoid these troll-like creatures in order to survive and get laid.

    Kevin is the Freew

    the2ndsuitor says:

Two thoughts are saddening me today:

    1. People eat deep-fried lard.

    2. Anyone involved w/ Hobgoblins making any $$$ off of that movie, other than MST3K episode royalties.

From the video, I want to smash the **** out of that typewriter!

  • 46
    klisch says:

We shouldn’t be surprised this happened, in fact someone made a sequel to The Beast of Yucca Flats and I’m sure it’s just as retarded as the first one.

  • 47
    Too Thin to Hear says:

Check out the trailer for HG2 on Youtube. At the very end there is a rendition of Mike and the Bots Hobgoblins song. That should be mentioned in the main article.

  • 48
    Charles says:

Hobgoblins wasn’t the worst movie MST3K did but it’s probably the most sleazy and definitely the most sexist. Rick Sloane, like Cave Dwellers director Joe D’Amato, also made a bunch of soft porn movies. I suspect he has changed completely and Hobgoblins 2 will be a feminist triumph.

  • 49
    MikeK says:

Life imitates art. In the MST3K Hobgoblins episode, Servo goes back in time and kicks Rick Sloane in the shin. Rick Sloane is then inspired by this event and makes Hobgoblins. MST3K brings attention to Hobgoblins and now Rick Sloane uses that attention to make Hobgoblins 2.

As for movies that are intentionally bad, I think it’s a good thing. It’s nice to know that the actors know exactly what they are making. They don’t have any illusions of making a good movie.

  • 50
    ck says:

While #49 above is accurate as far as it goes, the full strange story is that the left-over Crow from Time Chasers, after quickly rising to become the dominant force in the lucrative Wisconsin Cheese Factory industry. hears of a young directorial talent planning on making a Grimlins ripoff but is turned down in offering to finance it, in frustration CtR attacks Rick S., goes into hiding and becomes the angel backing a sinister mad scientist seeking to rule the world through a project involving forcing maintenance personnel to watch bad movies.

IMDB reports that there is a Manos sequel in the works! Titled ‘Manos: The Revenge of Torgo’

    nah…just kidding

  • 54
    StarDustMaiden says:

Thank you, #53, you just gave me some more gray hairs.

I’ll wait til a few used copies come out on Amazon.com.

  • 55
    Laura says:

There is no way in this universe that I would EVER see the un-MSTied version of Hobgoblins, let alone Hobgoblins 2! My boyfriend had said earlier this week that he might buy it. I told him I was definitely NOT showing up at his house that night!

  • 56
    ck says:

    #55, Laura

What, you don’t consider Daphne and Fantazia to be role models- at least for spandex modeling? And how about Nick as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs? Kind of reminds you of Buck Turgidson in Strangelove.

  • 57
    MikeK says:

I wonder if this Hobgoblins 2 could be good for us MSTies? If a director can use MST3K to get some attention for his movie, even if it’s infamous, then that is a good thing. This could be used to convince the rights holders of MSTed movies to loosen up and make a little money off of something that’s just sitting on the shelf.

  • 58

OH MY DEAR GOD!! Is that the fourth seal I hear breaking?

“First, Tyra, then Speidi and now Hobgoblins2!” Muhahahahahaha!
