More Hobgoblins Stuff

Check out the short film “Hobgoblins Revisited,” starring Rick Sloane himself and he revisits many of the locations from the original movie. Check it out here (scroll down a little).

Update: The video is now on youtube.

Also: Meet the cast of “Hobgoblins” at the San Diego Comic-Con Sunday, July 26th at 3 p.m. In attendance will be Kelley Palmer (Daphne), swimsuit and lingerie model Chanel Ryan (Fantazia from “Hobgoblins 2”), and writer/director Rick Sloane, plus an actual Hobgoblin puppet.
They will be signing autographs at the Shout Factory! booth to celebrate the 20th anniversary DVD release of Hobgoblins, as well as the brand new DVD release of the sequel. Also, they will be offering special collectibles — like mini-posters and original Hobgoblins soundtrack CDs — that will not be available anywhere else.

    Pig Liquor! Whooo!

As horrible as this is, I still think it’s a great argument for Shout! Factory to use when dealing with stubborn movie owners.

Well said, Mike K. Just goes to show how distributors can bring new-found recognition to their films by allowing Best Brains/Shout Factory! to release the MST3K episodes.

By the way, what ever happened to Paige Sulliven who played Amy?

I’ve got Kiss Kicker on 7″. Does this mean I can now have it in glorious digital audio? But what if I can’t make it to Comic-Con?

    Wah!

Watched Hobgoblins 2 (thanks Netflix) and… well… Honestly I didn’t actually watch it. More like I watched about half of it and then turned it off to preserve my remaining will to live. It is literally unwatchable. I can’t imagine a sane human being making it through the movie in one sitting without going berserk and killing anyone unfortunate enough to be near them. Basically the talentless person who failed so stupendously at making the original movie enjoyable in any genuine and intentional way now decided to make an even more intentionally overboard parody of their original failure, yet he has developed no new skills or talents in film making in the intervening decades. The self referential humor that is supposed to be intentionally parodying the original films low quality fails to be funny or enjoyable in any way itself, and so it is all the more unbearable to watch. It is in no way just a parody of a bad movie. It is genuinely an awful failure of a movie that is much worse, and far less enjoyable than the first one in every possible way.

Rick Sloane may be a terrible director, but he knows how to promote himself and his work. I gotta admire that.

  11. Uncle Bill says:

@Lucky Jim #9… How is Rick Sloane good at promoting himself and his work? The only reason anyone still knows about Hobgoblins at all is because it was on MST3K, which he had nothing to do with except maybe by accepting their request to use the film on the show, and at the time that was no doubt just an nice unexpected way for him to make a little money on a movie that he probably never expected to see another dime from. The movie was long forgotten (if ever noticed at all) until the MST crew did a great job making it into such a memorable episode. And because of what they did with his movie people are still loving and talk about THEIR work ten years later, not Rick Sloane’s work. Where is Rick Sloane’s brilliant self promotion in any of this? It’s not like he was out there all these years pushing his movies and getting people’s attention. All of the current interest in Hobgoblins 1 and 2 comes directly from their relation to MST, as does the distribution deal with Shout Factory, who also only sees potential in the movies because of that MST3K link. If not for that link to MST3K Hobgoblins 2 would never have been made at all, and even if it had no one would have paid any attention. Sloane is doing no more, and actually much less hard work than most small time film makers do to promote their films, except he is doing it while riding the wave created by MST3K’s reputation, and so people like us wind up seeing his promotions simply because sites like this give it exposure of their own accord, not because he is doing any particularly good self promotion. And unlike many small time film makers and their works which go completely unnoticed, Sloane’s work on it’s own merits is totally undeserving of any attention it gets outside of being the target of derision in a classic MST3K episode.

Just a question to all the MSTies out there: Did the featurette interest you at all (the idea of re-visiting the locations used in these b-films… as they exist today)? There are several comments listed here about Rick Sloane and his films, but no one has anything to say about the featurette. Just curious. I was thinking about creating a short online series dedicated to this.

Also, did anyone else catch the ‘nod’ to “MANOS”?

If I attended this, it would be strickly to meet Kelley Palmer; she’s easy on the eyes and seems to have a very good sense of humor.

…and, maybe to get a copy of the soundtrack. Just can’t resist “Fish Picker”!

What’s wrong with you guys? It actually does sound kind of cool! Sure, it’s a bad movie but isn’t it one of the best MST episodes ever? Remember how the cast and creators of “Time Chasers” had no sense of humor about their movie being MSTied even though they were excited about it at first? Geez, imagine if Hal Warren was still alive and we got to go to a convention and meet him and Torgo and the sharp dog? Wouldn’t that be cool? It’s fun!

  19. Cabbage Patch Elvis says:

Of COURSE I’d want to meet Torgo! In a perfect world, Comic-Con would be in my living room and start only after I dragged my butt out of bed. Torgo would be there, along with Tor Johnson, Yvette Vickers and Lee Van Cleef. I’d even want the entire Hobgoblins cast there….to sweep up after it was over.

I think the coolest part is getting to see one of the Hobgoblins puppets in person. Am I the only one who knows who Chanel Ryan is? She’s way hot!
Plus a Hobgoblins soundtrack, finally. It’s like Christmas came early, expect Rick Sloane will be there.
