Update: RiffTrax Live Event to Broadcast to Theaters Nationwide

Update: If you were interested in seeing the show live at the Belcourt Theater in Nashville, and you didn’t manage to buy a ticket when they went on sale this morning, you’re out of luck. The show sold out in a matter of minutes, then the theater freed up a few more seats at mid-morning, which were also gone lickety-split.

RiffTrax is planning a live event Thursday, Aug. 20: a riffing of “Plan 9 from Outer Space” which will be performed at the Belcourt Theater in Nashville, Tenn., and beamed into movie theaters nationwide live at 8 p.m. eastern, 7 p.m. central, 6 p.m. mountain and tape delayed at 8 p.m. pacific time.

The event will be hosted by Veronica Belmont, the Host of Tekzilla on Revision3 and Qore on the PlayStation Network (whatever the hell THAT means), with musical guest Jonathan Coulton and a special segment by Rich “Lowtax” Kyanka of Something Awful.

All event attendees will receive FREE exclusive digital goodies: A URL and code will be revealed on-screen at the end of the event.

If a local theater is doing this, i’m there with bells on.

Also, Qore is a subscription only show-type-thingiemabobber on Playstation’s online store. I’ve never seen it, though, and have absolutely no clue what Revision 3 is.

  2. There is a space to enter your zip code on the “live event” link Sampo provided to see the nearby theaters showing the performance. And if you live near Nashville, tickets go on sale next Friday if you wanna see it in person on the Belcourt’s homepage: http://www.belcourt.org/

  3. I definitely want to see this if it’s possible (depends on whether there is a theater in my neck of the woods doing this, which I guess we won’t know for a while, and how expensive this will actually be).

  4. Ah, I see the post by Connor.

Nearest theater to me is about an hour away — with gas prices I’m not so sure that’s going to be something I can do. But we’ll see (it makes the evening about $100 counting food — not sure even Mike and Co are worth that right now :>)

Also, the longer announcement states that they will be premiering a short film as well… That should be fun.

Hey! Revision3 is an online TV network, we have shows on all sorts of topics, like movie special effects, internet culture, comics, video games, etc. My show, Tekzilla, is all about technology help and how-tos!

I’m really excited for the event, hope you guys enjoy it!

  10. @John, this isn’t a “stream” – it’s a Satellite simulcast, complete with a van equipped with a satellite dish, like they use for news coverage and other broadcast events of this type. They are much better prepared for this type of thing than we are :)

    It’ll be a blast!

  11. Aw, schnap! Two of the theaters are not far from my house, the only question is how many people I can round up to go and which theater it is. Boo ya!

OMG……if Ed Wood were alive today how excited he would be to see his film back on the big screen across the entire country. I don’t think he would have cared if it was getting ripped by fifftrax or not ..I am so going to see this film.

At first I didn’t understand but when I figured out it was going to happen at the theater down the street from me, I’m all over it. Forwarded the email to all my buddies. And nice to see THE Veronica making the rounds to our little SoL.

A theater right near me is showing it and according to Movietickets.com it’s $12.50. I’m going to pick up my tickets at the theater though, because Movietickets.com can kiss my butt with their $1 surcharge, and I’d rather get them that way anyway.

Kool post. No matter what, somethings will always remain mystery.

In fact, I myself have been trying to solve the mystery of the legend that forces you to have “earn it before having it”, for a wile now. Could not understand much though.

Let me know in case you get to understand the mystery of the Old Hound and the Legend

By the way, good writing style. I’d love to read more on similar topics

Oh my gosh, the theater 11 miles from my house is showing it!!! I got to see the CT crew back in April and now this – it’s too much I tell ya!

I don’t know how I’ve missed it, but I’ve never seen Plan 9 so this will be a great way to experience it for the first time.

I’d love to take my 11 and 13 year olds to this…but wondering exactly if the “commentary” would be appropriate (ie we’re fairly conservative parents – we let them watch the first Transformers but fast forwarded during one specific scene and will NOT let them see the second due to continual overt sexual references). Any assistance/comments would be appreciated.

  22. Louie,

I’d be absolutely amazed (even shocked) if Mike and Co. did anything you couldn’t safely take your teenage sons to go see.

The one consistent thing about not only MST3K but even the various video releases (The Film Crew, Rifftrax) is they have always been able to remain firmly PG (even more G than PG) while still being a little “naughty”. I attribute this in large part to Mike’s conservative sensibilities, but no matter what I think it’s a safe bet it will be that way in the theater as well.

Now — I can’t speak for the other acts on the bill but if they are associated with Mike I would feel he would vet them out in the same manner.

And, of course, “Plan 9” is as safe as safe can be in terms of what they will show onscreen.

  23. I’m definitely going here in Kansas City. Most likely the one at Ameristar Casino instead of the Plaza if anybody else from here is going.

Kind of curious if Lowtax is gonna see it and to which theater he would go to. I didn’t see any showing for Lee’s Summit.

  24. @Bobo: Lowtax is part of the show, actually. I think he has 15 minutes or so, the script he’s working on with Mike. I believe his segment is at the top of the show.

WOW..if you don’t think a 13 year old can handle “Transformers 2” You may want to shelter him from “Plan 9” as well…I mean Vampira’s costume does show some cleavage.

It’s coming to a lot of the newer AMC theaters in and around Chicago for 12.50 not including ticket fee. I’m going – I’ve got a warm feeling for the Rifftraxers after they gave us the gift that is “The Room.”

  29. @Husky Kenny: Glad to hear it. Hopefully this turns into a regular event, as long as it does well.

  30. I’ll be in Ashland, KY, which is 30 or so miles from me. I’m stoked for this. Admittedly I haven’t really kept up with RiffTrax the way I have CT and I think this will be a perfect opportunity to see how the rest of the later-season MST3K crew are doing. Plus, the idea of seeing Plan 9 in a theater is VERY exciting, as I’m another one who’s oddly never actually watched it despite being a B-movie buff of sorts.

I’m sort of curious as to why they’re doing it in Nashville, though. Nothing against Nashville, I just figured that being based in CA they would have chosen a city there to avoid travel costs.

Nonetheless, I’m totally pumped for this!

You know, when I am at the theaters (like tonight for Potter), I always see Fathom Events advertisements (in fact, I saw one for the Met Opera). So I was excited for this. Unfortunately, I found out the closest one to me is in Philly. Why can’t it be playing in south Jersey I ask you? WHY?

Oh heck, I might just drive to Philly anyways; I did it for the live CT show.

    @Fred P:

I saw a note somewhere (Mike Nelson’s twitter, maybe?) that said that the cinema owners wouldn’t go for a weekend show because they wouldn’t want to miss out on the crowds for the big summer movie weekends… So they had to go for a day that’s not a big movie night… Sorry…

  36. lamontcranston says:

According to their list there are two theaters within 20 miles of me showing it. However, when I hit the purchase ticket button the next screen tells me I can’t purchase tickets because there are no special events scheduled for that date.

Are the theaters on that list a done deal? Have they all definitely agreed to participate?

OK – WOW! I had to re-read that sentence about 6 times to make sure I wasn’t dreaming or hallucinating!!!!!!!

I live about 4 blocks from the Belcourt Theater !!!! YESSSS!!!!!

I’d love to meet some other local MSTIES at the show! I may have to send off for a “Thank You, Won’t You?” t-shirt as an identifier.

Dream come true … wow! Maybe the CT crew will eventually do a show here too.

PS. The Belcourt Theater is a lovely old theater here in Nashville and the only one that shows ‘indy’ films, art movies, hosts live jazz shows, documentaries and other non-hollywood stuff.

The place is a local treasure of coolness going WAY WAY back. My dad saw Eraserhead there back in the early 1980s and bought me an Eraserhead shirt when i was just a kid!

It’s the perfect venue for a live rifftrax, very eclectic, non-conformist kinda place & the only movie theater in town that sells BEER!

    NOT a coincidence!

This is very exciting- and kind of weird that they beat live show-centric CineTit crew to this simulcast thing. How far away are we from all seven uniting on a ‘double feature’ project? They could each do a movie & then 7-team a short…

Joel and the bots should have done this movie a long time ago.

I wonder if I should buy online or at the counter? Could it actually get sold out?

  47. Sampo says:

Klisch: If it’s not too inconvenient, save yourself the service fee and run over to the theater today and buy it, rather than online. But do it ahead of time. Yes, it could get sold out.

By the way: If anybody will be seeing this at the Cinemark 20 in Moosic, Pa., so will I!

    AAARRRRGGHHHH! NOOOOOO!!!

The tickets for seating at the Belcourt went on sale at 10:00am and by the time I logged on shortly after noon THEY WERE ALL GONE! OUCH! DAMN!

    Any Scalpers Out There???

Oh well, they are showing it at two other theaters in town, but i so wanted to be there at Belcourt for the actual live event, meet the guys , etc.

Grrrrr.. The late bird Does NOT get the worm. Bah …

Anyway, still glad this is happening and will be shown around the country! It is a great idea and there is great response from fans and theaters so far! This means MORE live riffs in the future, i hope!
